Prompt;; (max 1000 words)
Who would have thought that a group of bullies would lead to one of thr most important discoveries in one viscet's life. It all started when Onyx went to his first day of school.
“Isn’t that a boyyyyyyy’s name!” A mean group of visclings laughed at her. But she wasn’t bothered by her name being a “boys” name. It wasn’t even that she was tough skinned and able to take hits, but moreso the fact that she actually preferred to have a more “boyish” name.
As she grew up and started questioning her sexuality and gender, she used the feelings the bullies gave her to guide her on her way. It was a fairly bumpy road, until things finally smoothed out- she figured out she no longer wanted to be a she, but instead a
he.
But the world was a judgemental place, and he thought that if he expressed himself he would be rejected by everyone he loved, so he decided to live alone. That wasn’t a big change though, he wanted to live a solitary life anyway. He wasn’t ever much for talking to others, but instead enjoyed living his own life not being caught up in everyone else’s drama. With the help of some construction workers, he built himself a large treehouse a little while way off in the forest near his hometown. He lived a happy life until one small thing led to everything going wrong.
Over anything he could pick, Onyx’s favorite thing about the forest was the silence. The occasional rustle of leaves, a branch shaking or a strong gust of wind. That was music to his ears. He could go to bed hearing nothing,
silence.
Clear of thoughts,
peace.
Listening to the swaying trees.
It was peaceful living alone in the quiet forest that he called home.
Onyx’s treehouse was perfectly calculated.
High enough to not disturb nature,
Low enough to safely get down and to not be a hassle to the birds.
Big enough to be comfortable in,
Small enough to be held in only a few trees with only minor tree casualties.
It
was wonderful.
The entire forest
was wonderful.
The silence
was wonderful.
Especially at night.
Of course, it is hard to enjoy the peace when you only hear one thing when trying to sleep.
And that one thing isn't silence.
It is
screaming.
Screaming coming from all directions.
From animals.
From innocent animals.
The crackling of burning leaves.
The thump of branches and entire trees.
Falling down.
Burning.
Everything burning.
The most vivid thing had to have been not even 30 feet away.
First it was a crack of a branch.
Then the rustle and crunch of hooves stumbling through burning leaves.
Then a loud snap.
And then a whoosh.
And then a scream from a young buck.
A scream that pierced the fearful night.
A scream that echoed.
And still echoes in his mind.
That one was the worst to hear.
Especially since he knew that young buck.
It wasn't really his fault, though he did start the fire.
It was only a small, harmless bonfire to burn a pile of leaves.
But he didn't realize how dry it really was outside.
How windy it really was.
The fire was quickly out of his control.
Every second fire was getting closer to destroying everything he loved.
All his animal friends, his peaceful home, everything.
And when it did destroy everything, he knew he was responsible for lives of many forest animals.
He says he was a killer, that it is best to stay away.
He now lives elsewhere, a place he can't do much harm.
Onyx says he should have been one of the fatalities, coming out unscathed.
Silence is rare for him anymore.
All he can hear is the screams; the burning.
So when he gets it, silence is still his favorite, even though he knows he doesn't deserve it.
