prompt:
"Eh... ie-d-ah-lie-a?"
"It's Idalia. eih-dahl-ee-uh. But I go by Lee." The whisper of shifting fur indicated the movement of the dark kalon sitting inside the waiting room as he rose to his paws. The short, bumbling kalon in front of him stopped looking expectantly at the other, female applicant, and looked up at Lee in surprise.
"Bu-but..." The secretary adjusted her glasses and tucked a strand of mousey hair back in her messy bun. Lee's honey-hued eyes narrowed slightly and his tail twitched in aggravation. She was expecting a girl. Of course she would be, after all, Idalia is a girl's name. Not that anyone says that to his face anymore. A scene from his childhood flashed through Lee's mind.
There were four kits surrounding a feminine-featured kit the color of coal. The kit's tail shine hid between his legs, which scratched uncomfortably against the bark of the oak tree.
"Why don't you just go play with the girls? After all, Idalia is a girl's name, so you're a girl!" One kit taunted, swiping at Lee's paws and causing him to scrabble back and press his back to the trunk of the tree.
"I-I'm not." He protested weakly, tears beginning to prick at the corners of his wide, fearful eyes. His hair was mussed and bits of undergrowth peeked out of hit: a testimony to his wild attempt to escape the gang of bullies.
"Yeah you are, just admit it!" Two of the other kits took advantage of his exposed posture to claw at his tail, leaving stinging scratches. Lee dropped to all fours again, hunched over to protect his tail.
"S-stop." Lee pleaded. "J-just leave me alone." The smallest of the gang strutted over and shoved his face in Lee's, something he wouldn't have dared if he didn't have the other three kits backing him up.
"Ha! We'll never stop, you're too much fun to pick on, little girl." He was right, Lee realized as the tiny kit painfully scratched his muzzle. This had to stop now, or it never would. The coal-colored kalon narrowed his eyes and turned his muzzle back towards the confident kit who was laughing back towards his lackeys.
"Knock it off. I'm done." Lee said quietly, ears poised back. The smallest kit stopped mid-laugh and turned back towards Lee, moving closer until their whiskers were almost touching.
"What did you say, missy?"
"I'm DONE." Lee, while lithe, was by no means a small kalon. He was already taller than most of his peers, a fact which he realized as he rose slowly from his crouch to glare down at the creature in front of him. The much-shorter kit's sneer wavered slightly, and his tail twitched uncertainly. Then the taller kalon snapped with an almost-audible crack, and a definitely-audible smack as Lee swiped at the kit in front of him with enough force to knock him into another bully. All previous trepidation disappeared as Lee launched himself at the next kits closest to him. He beat them soundly, and then there was only one remaining bully, who wavered uncertainly at the edge of the clearing. Lee continued to glare menacingly at the other kit, who nodded fearfully and skittered away in terror. Lee was left standing in the forest alone. Nobody bothered making fun of his name after that, and Lee began putting on a tough front. Now if anyone teases him, he's willing to kick their-
"-Um, Lee? You can go in now." The secretary pulled Lee from his memories, and he squared his shoulders before heading into the interview.
