xhe hated that world. the war, the gods, the sentinel- it was a mess. pelb grieved for all who had to live out their pitiful lives there. when he met that creature's daughters, one angry for her mother's crimes, the other biting their tongue, he knew he had to do something. the pain in the younger girl's eyes reminded him of himself- so he grabbed the child by the arm, and began running as he let the light of another world envelope them.
xmio couldn't remember her family aside from the fighting. it was constant- she remembered a a sharp girl's words against a forgiving man, and a monster of a woman against them both. she was frazzled by her hazy memories of the past, but never cared much for the struggle. she was told by one of the king of cathoria's inventors that they were bad people, so she took his word for it, and never thought much of them.
xlife was easy, but it was never simple. mioralie wasn't quite a fool or jester, but she was still just a toy of the royal court's. she was the king's "little songbird", stuck in a sometimes literal cage. when her wings weren't strapped down to her body, held tightly in place with a lock, their brief moments of freedom were spent grounded as she danced and sang for the cathorian nobility.
xthe most exposure mio had was during the king's lavish parties. they built a cage for her to wait in after she once attempted to harass a guest from another kingdom, so she had nothing better to do then sit and listen in. visitors were bewildered by her whimsical appearance and occasional snide remarks- she was a tourist attraction in some regards, and while the girl was on thin ice at times, would it be profitable to execute a treasure?
xthe girl knew too much. plans of war, trade deals, bribes to and from the king... mio could spout it out when she wandered the streets at times, but what good would that be? it'd cause panic, and it wouldn't help herself out much. so the caged bird kept her mouth quiet, and only opened it to sing.
xthe king was jealous of her wings. he saw them as a threat. it wasn't much of a secret that he wanted a pair of his own. she was regularly sent to a team who poked at her, studying her foreign appendages. the head of the operation, scrimine binghurst, who eventually became an acquaintance, assured her that she had nothing to worry about. she worried regardless.
xmio could only guess that the townspeople were jealous as well. at first, she never thought to cover her wings- they were already tied back, so why would they matter to others? but in the streets, unexpectedly, she was met with harsh eyes and scornful words. she quickly learned to wear a cloak or jacket.
xaside from her initial troubles, mioralie began to love her wiggle room. as she wasn't given any money for her 'work', the only way the inexperienced girl could survive was by performing on the street. her powerful alto voice paired with the tambourine she took from the palace were enough to draw a crowd, and when she shyly left her bag open next to her, she made enough to buy a few material objects for her small residence within the castle walls. although it was something, she still never felt entirely free.
x"scrimine?"
x"we're in the kitchen!" mio's... friends sat around a table, waving as she entered the room. scrimine, the warmest of the bunch, patted the chair next to her. "come sit, love. rohana and bea aren't here right now, but i figured you'd be stopping by."
xmio smiled. "y-yeah. i wanted to say hi, that's all."
x"nice." scrimine gave her a pat on the shoulder, and mio grinned. in her eyes, she was the closest thing to a mother. she'd pulled her in after a performance, and began to give her advice on avoiding the wrath of the king ever since. scrimine wasn't perfect, but mio loved her. "pelb, say hello, please?"
x"meh." the catlike kalon continued to do... whatever. mio was weary of him. the way he looked at her made her uneasy- it wasn't a gawk, but he had something up his sleeve. she nodded towards him, and sat down.
x"i'm tired, scrimmy. the king's having a meeting tonight with some of the other kingdoms, and i have to go. i stayed out too long this morning and now i'm dying."
x"well," she said, stern, "you know you can't keep doing that. i know you just want to have money on hand, but you can just ask me, mio. and before you protest, no, you wouldn't be a bother."
xpelb got up, rolling his eyes. "listen, kid. quit complainin'. life could be worse for all of us. you just have to push through it all, and it'll end up fine."
xhe pushed his chair in, and headed out of the room. scrimine scowled. "we all struggle. if one man drowns in a bathtub and another drowns in the ocean, they're both drowning."
xthe older girl was good at putting things in ways that mio could get them. some things just never seemed to click unless scrimine explained them. "i guess so. i just feel like i'm a burden sometimes. when i'm with the royals, when i'm being myself, when i'm with you- i always... i always feel bad."
x"it's not something you can just get over, mio. it takes time to loosen up. it took me years. you remind me of, well, me, in a way. i was afraid of the future. i still am, but now i can deal."
x"i don't want to deal." she stuck her tongue out. "i just want to sing and be happy."
xscrimine giggled. "i'm sure you do. just try to take it easy, alright?" she nodded, and with a glance at the time, mio gave her elder a farewell, and took off to the streets. maybe there'd be time for another show.

xwhen she set her bag down on the edge of the fountain, a few commoners began to crowd around her. she didn't always perform in the town square, as it made her nervous that she'd get in trouble. the king knew she was doing this shindig, but never scolded mio for it. of course, the thought plagued her, but what else could she do aside from suck it up?
xpulling her tambourine out of her bag, she took in a deep breath. she'd done this so many times before, but she was always anxious before starting. there was nothing to be afraid of- she let her breath out with a smile, and began to sing.
xeven with her wings tied back, she felt like she was flying on the cobbled ground. it was almost dreamlike for mio. she could never recall what happened as the group around her grew thicker, and only regained focus after she belted out her last note, and steadied her feet, meekly bowing as the townspeople cheered.
xit were times like this that she wanted to cherish, but even in her proud moments, mio felt dry and awkward. these people deserved better than just a little girl and her tambourine, but they loved it regardless. she sighed as the crowd began to disperse, tossing coins into the bag she held out as they left.
xa child approached her once everyone was gone, and stared at the girl for a moment. with no hesitation, they held out a silver coin, gave her a smile, and darted off on their way.
xit was a strange thought for her, but maybe her act wasn't that bad.
xmonths after her incident with the child, things declined. pelb was gone- he jumped worlds, or something like that. scrimine grew closed off, but let mio know a few fun facts along the way.
xpelb was the one who took her to cathoria. "he said he found you by the river, but i'm sure it's more than that. you said you remember a family... i'm sure he took you from them. that bast- that wretch."
xit was the last thing she ever said directly to the girl. when in the same room, mio threw her glances, but scrimine would never look back. when she became frosted over, mio lost some spark herself.
xthe king's temper grew after the pelb fiasco. she couldn't bring herself to sing one night, and before she knew it, all the guards in the room were pointing their swords at her throat. mio's notes were weak, but it was acceptable.
xlife was bleak. the only time she felt decent were her street performances. everything else never made the girl let out even the smallest of a grin, and the world seemed to grow miserable around her.
xall she wanted was to find her family, but she knew it was impossible. the idea drove her to the edge of sanity. she didn't know her origins- she didn't know herself.
xmio had no one. stretching her wings above her, she held her head in her arms. too bad that the caged bird couldn't fly.
