The night was cold and dim. Mist filled the air coating everything in tiny water droplets. Most of the grassy park was turned to mud and slick stone. But that didn’t bother them. As long as it wasn’t pouring they would still do their nightly walk. He liked the smell of rain and the cool feeling of grass and stone underfoot. The walk was his favorite time. He thought Gerald liked it too. In the evening when Gerald came home they would head out to the park. They would walk the paths taking in the sunsets or stars. At the far end of the park they would sit under an old oak to eat a small meal. Gerald always brought the best snacks. Tonight was no different. They ate in comfortable silence and sat together as the night grew darker. Soon it was time to journey home. As they walked down the narrow path that led to home silence suddenly gave was to a monstrous roar. Turning back, the dark path was illuminated with bright light. A rough shove made him stumble sideways and a rush of wind tugged at him as the monster veered closer. The sound was intense. Low growls and high squeals. Like nothing he had heard before. In the dimness he could make out a large fast moving form passing inches from him. Cowering he pressed closer to the edge of the road. The creature stopped briefly before speeding away. And then it was silent. Gerald? He called out hesitantly. No answer. Stepping forward he found him sleeping. But why was he sleeping? He tried to wake him with a nudge. Surely it would be better to sleep at home. But he wouldn’t wake. No matter what he did he stayed asleep. So he laid down to wait.
They didn’t go home that night.

“Have you heard about the ghost dog?” Caleb looked up and met Skylar’s mischievous eyes. She watched him grinning her sketchbook held close. “There’s no such thing.” He replied sternly and looked back at his book. “Ghosts don’t exist.” Skylar rolled her eyes and gave him a playful shove. “Sure they do.” She grinned “and monsters and cryptids and everything.” Caleb continued reading his book as she continued to talk about her ghost stories. “Haha yea right,” Caleb replied sarcastically, “I’m reading leave me alone.” With a humph Skylar pulled the book away. “I’m serious.” She met his eye and tried to look serious. “Haven’t you heard of the ghost dog? It appeared on a Friday the thirteenth and comes back every night. It just wanders silently and stares with dead white eyes.” Caleb rolled his eyes. “Its just a dog. Calm down. It’s probably lost.” He watched frustration creep into Skylar’s eyes. “Oh yea? Then I dare you to stay out there tonight.”
“Fine. I will.”
Caleb sat on a bench and pulled his hoodie closer. It was cold and dark. He hated this. He hated the dark. He didn’t like the cold. But he had to prove to Skylar that her story was completely unfounded. It wasn’t all bad though. He had his favorite book and it was quiet. So he settled in with a small reading light and let the hours pass. So far: nothing. So involved with his book, Caleb didn’t notice the time pass. Something rustling in the bushing snapped him back to reality. Looking around he called out, “hello?” Something light colored was off in the distance, but he couldn’t quite place it before it moved out of view. Huh… weird. Shaking his head he assumed it was nothing. But in the back of his mind he remembered what Skylar said. That’s ridiculous, he thought to himself. Nothing like that would ever happen. Right? The rustling moved closer and Caleb set the book down. Standing he reached for the book light but it barely lit the area around him. He should have brought a flashlight. Its fine.. its fine… its fine… He was tired. He should have just gone home. Turning to get his things he froze as a thin figure appeared out of the bushes. The dog was pale in color, thin, with white eyes and was drooling. Logically his mind went: its just a dog, but every other part of him was screaming ghost dog. Or rabid dog? Either way he was out. Scrambling back he tripped over his feet. As ghost dog lurched forward and he closed his eyes. And felt a small cold touch on his cheek. Cracking open an eye he saw the dog standing in front of him. It wagged its tail calmly then searched his bag dragging out some uneaten food. “Oh…” Caleb let his breath out. Just a dog. Of course. “What’s your name?” he asked the stray noticing an old dirty collar.
“Napstablook? Nice to meet you”

He had searched for Gerald for a while. Another human had come and took him away. But he remained here at the park, waiting for him to come back. They needed to finish the walk. Today there was a new human sitting at their spot. Curious he walked towards him. He could smell food. It reminded him so much of old times. Maybe this human wanted to share to? He could smell fear on the human suddenly and heard him fall to the ground. Confused Napstablook, approached the human and nudged him with his nose. He seemed fine. Turning he turned and looked for the food. Upon hearing his name Napstablook turned towards him tilting his head. Part of him knew Gerald wasn't coming back. But he had wanted to wait. Maybe this human would be his new Gerald. Only time would tell.
"Lets go home" the human said.
