favourite riddle and why;

"What can you have, only once you've given it?"

Sometimes, you have to look at something in a different perspective before you can really understand it-- or sometimes, even see it. That is why I have a love and passion for riddles, for it teaches you that not everything is what it appears to be. It makes you see things in another view that maybe you haven't thought of before. I think the world needs to learn how to do that a little more. Maybe then, there would be less anger and more peace.

For the longest time, I was confused as to why there was so much hatred and anger in the world. I tried to find a solution, but simply wishing for world peace wasn't good enough. Sure, peace is great, but if we're constantly in agreement all the time, no one would be different, and nothing would ever really change. If there's no competition, there's no desire or strive to improve, to be better. And then I met someone who gave me the one thing I needed the most-- what I really needed to see.

This one thing is something nearly magical. You can get it from others, but only after you have given it to them yourself. It's a gift that you can receive only if you gave it to them. This gift, I believe, has the power to change the world, the one thing that I think can truly create a proper balance that will allow others to feel better and safer. Sure, maybe world peace is too "perfect" for reality, but this will allow others to do just what I think would be best-- to see in someone else's perspective and to give them what you want in return.

What is this, you ask? No, no, it is not an object. Not money, either.

Respect.

Imagine this:

You're walking along the damp cobblestone streets of a small but busy town, early in the morning where you can still feel the crisp air on your skin, the morning sunlight shimmering off of the dew that covers the town in a light layer. The air is still chilly, but you feel a revigorating warmth beneath your coat. As you approach the street corner, you notice a little cafe at the end, with a small wooden sign hanging from the awning, showing off a delicately painted coffee cup in the center. Curious, you enter, opening the heavy cedar door with a light shove, a little bell ringing as you step in. The atmosphere to the cafe already attracts you, with its light and gentle music playing in the background, the quiet chatter of customers as they drink their coffee or tea, and especially the scent of fresh coffee. It's a perfect compliment to the cool morning air you just left, and you immediately feel calm and welcome. You take a seat at a table and chair near a window overlooking the nearby body of water, and you read the menu in front of you. You notice that there are quite a few bookshelves scattered about the cafe, each covered in countless books and trinkets. The table itself is made of polished wood, with little intricate carvings around the edge, and of course, the chair to match. Minutes after you place your order, a waitress politely places a hot cocoa and plate of macaroons in front of you, both in beautiful white porcelain dishes. You admire the gold decor on the cup, wondering just where they acquired these. The hot cocoa itself is entrancing, with the steam still rolling off of the top of the warm drink, filling the air with a sweet chocolate scent. While it too hot to drink, you carefully place your hands on the outside of the cup, relaxing at the sudden warmth it provides. You select a book from the nearby bookshelf and flip through the pages curiously. After a while, the waitress appears again, and this time, you notice a little name tag on her apron.

"Reese," you say out loud quietly, without thinking. Luckily, the waitress did not deem it odd and smiled politely.

"You like the book? I personally find it one of my favourites," she says gently, almost a little shy. You respond with a nod, and express your adoration for the aesthetic of this cafe, for it is one of few that have a calming aura to it while still being refreshing. Happily, Reese smiles. "I'm glad that you like it. I'm actually the owner of the cafe, but I prefer working here on the floor where I can interact with the customers. I didn't want to own something but only sit on the sidelines. It's no fun that way, I think."

Impressed, you invite her to take a seat across from you. The cafe seems to have a few customers, but not too busy. You hope that she has the time to chat for a bit-- it's been awhile since you've had a decent conversation with someone.

"I'd love to," she responds cheerfully, taking a seat across from you. "So, where shall we begin?"

While seemingly average at first glance, Reese tends to shock others once they have gotten to know her and her strange mind. Typically she is found reading books or working at her cafe, but what goes on in her mind is much more of a complicated situation. She's the kind of person that questions almost everything-- almost to the point of confusing and possibly irritating others. Even as a child, she would ask question after question, up until the point that adults shushed her and ushered her away. Still, that did not stop her. As she grew and began to get a better understanding of the world, she began to push boundaries and ask questions others did not ask. Even in day-to-day conversations, Reese will ask strange questions that lead you to think and to learn things about yourself you may not have known-- and that is exactly her reason for asking them. Reese's main desire in life is to learn new things about everyone but to also help them learn more about themselves. You never know what you didn't know, well, until you know. One of her favourite questions will be to ask what someone's favourite colour is. Here's the catch, though: they have to explain why. How can you explain why something is your favourite? To Reese, the answer is there, albeit hidden. Maybe it reminds you of a certain feeling or object, maybe even a person. Or maybe it puts you in a certain mood. Other times, Reese will ask about someone's favourite sound or smell or even ask what they think about alternate universes or aliens or what happens after death. These questions tend to be overwhelming for some, but others find it intriguing and desire more. It's what makes Reese so peculiar and strange.

However, these kinds of questions and this way of thinking leads Reese to sometimes being overwhelmed with her thoughts. Constantly thinking about life and death and different universes can sometimes make her feel like nothing really matters in life, or that nothing she does will ever make a difference. This sometimes puts her into a darker and sadder mood, but after a while, she realizes that that's inevitable, but it's also okay. It's part of life.

Aside from her strange sense of curiosity, Reese is also quite the strange friend. She can be outgoing and passionate one moment but reserved and quiet the next. She seems to bounce in and out, but that's what makes her more unique. Reese has the habit of making strange faces to express herself, and even stranger sounds sometimes. No matter what, though, she will never do anything to harm or hurt her friends, or even strangers. One of her proudest traits is that she tries to always be kind to others. In her head, she might sometimes make up stories or possibilities for someone she sees, such as a stranger in the grocery store or someone crossing the street. These possibilities allow her to better try to understand others, or at least be more forgiving. Maybe a lady in the store got angry at the cashier for being slow, but maybe that lady is having a rough day. Maybe her family is sick or maybe she got laid off her job. This way of thinking allows Reese to be nicer to others, and to learn to be more forgiving, even though that person might not deserve it.

All in all, Reese is the kind of friend that is both strange but intriguing. She is always interesting to have in a conversation, although her questions can hurt your mind a little. She's a loyal and gentle friend, that sometimes has her ups and downs, but will always manage to find a way to be happy again. Reese adores her cafe and it is her precious child, and will gladly invite you for a cup of coffee or hot cocoa.
