The coyote scribe opened his journal and flipped a few pages in. He looked for his place and checked his watch for the time.
8:43 it said. He began to write.
"Every night I observe the same little creature. A rabbit it is. For the past two weeks, every night the rabbit has done the same thing. He comes from my east, suddenly appearing out of nowhere at the exact same time every night like he was sneaky fast. He looks back behind him, then to his left, then right, then repeats that every wight hops west. It is like he is in a loop. I wonder if he is just really synchronized or if someone mysterious is going on with that forest. He seems out of control and afraid. He should be afraid."
He set down his pen and closed his jounal to wait for the rabbit.
The coyote picked up his pen and began to jot down his findings.
"I can't believe I didn't have time to write this down yet! Last night was exciting! The rabbit came back, obviously, but the loop was strange! The rabbit came out of the bush like normal, but he looked back across his right shoulder, not his left! Huh! I mean he probably got bored of doing the same thing at 9:03 every night, but who knows for sure?! Maybe something supernatural and above me is going on."
He slammed down his journal in anticipation for the next night.
The coyote picked up a blue pen, different from his usual black one. He likes the feel and grip of this new pen better, so he decided to use it. That color would symbolize a new discovery.
The happenings of the forest.
"Strange that the rabbit did that last night. As I right the clock says 9:04 9:05 and the rabbit has already passed. He did his regular loop again. This time though, even though I was far away, I could practically see the fear in his eyes. He had a few scratches on his rear. I think my mind was play'n tricks on me 'cause those scratches seemed to shimmer and sparkle. Anyways... They looked bad. Will take a while to heal I bet. 'Least he got away."
He fiddles with his new blue pen. It felt so nice. It wrote so smooth. Ink practically poured out. He never once had to scribble to refresh the ink and could write right away. He smiled as it touched the delicate paper.
"Strange.
That is the only word I really have... tonight was odd. Those scratches. They surely looked deep enought to last a week at least. But they were completely gone. I know it was the same rabbit passin' bye. The one with the nick in it's left ear. Yes, that is the one. I wonder how it healed so fast."
The coyote picked up his pen yet again. This time it was morning. He almost never wrote in the morningx
"My home is a short walk from the forest. You can see my house, tiny in the distance when at the edge of the forest. It looks so comfortable and cozy looking at it from out there. But you can't hear trees. So why did I wake up hearing them?"
[later that day]
"Huh. The forest is speaking."
[two days pass. there have been no entries written in the journal]
"So sorry, my dearest journal. Don't know why I am apologizing. Noone will read this journal. Wait. If you are seeing this that means you have my journal! Hey! Hi there! I badly want to know how you got this. Unfortunately, if you have this, that means I am dead. Shoot. What do I say? Is there anything I need to confess. Oh gosh. Well, I have to stop rambling now! I have great findings! I'll explain my findings in a bit!"
"Echoes can be heard in the forest. How does a forest even echo? I don't know. Facinating but definitely creepy... I can hear the trots of a dear crisp and clear. Some munching on leaves. And a stranges owwhooo ohhhwoooo owwwhoooo noise. Huh. Repeating what I wrote doesn't capture it. Too bad I can't put sound into the pages."
The coyote sat down about twenty away from the forest.
"Finally. Peace and quite. I dislike the ticking of the clock and the whistling of the heater. I like natures sounds... well.. not these new echo sounds. They are very disturbing. I think I want to explore the forest. I need answers. All of this is too strange. It doesn't seem natural. All I will have is my bag with a few pens, this journal, and some food and water. I will explore until I find what is causing these weird things to happen. If you are reading this, the journal is okay. Or at least partially okay, and that is all that matters. We will know the mysteries of the forest. We will have answers!!!"
The coyote waited for the rabbit to come by at 9:03, and when the rabbit appeared, he jumped after it immediately. The coyote then followed it on its journey. He was completely unaware of what he just did. When the rabbit looked back it saw him, and he could see the shock in its eye. It still continued on like always. He was intrigued by the behavior, and followed the rabbit for a few more hours. He soon grew bored of this. The rabbit never once acknowledged him, other than glances with fear when it looked to where he assumed it always did. Never once did it bother to look around him. Never once did it bother to say hello. "How rude" he thought.
When he wandered off, he came across a bear. The bear looked scared and unsure too. Maybe it would acknowledge him. Unfortunately for him, it was a bear more uncivilized and more hostile then he was. It too was new to the loop too and had free will like him. It began to chase him, and scratched him. He turned around and fought back. He bit the bear, and ran off. Hurt and annoyed, he was just glad he still had his belongings, and he wandered off again. Eventually he came across the rabbit with the nick in its ear. "Hello!" He said to it, unamused by the fact that it didn't respond. It continued to hop, so he walked away.
The coyote wandered around the forest for another hour or so. He decided to sleep inside a hallowed out tree at the side of the forest his home wa near. When he woke up, he stretched out and yawned. Looking through his items, he made sure everything was still there. It was. He got up and went to the small stream that ran through to wash off. Not so good water it was, so he drank from his own source of water. The coyote wandered around and jotted down some notes of things he found strange.
"• Bear went after me, while rabbit showed no interest.
• I am getting a strange feeling from this forest
• It all seems so lackluster
• It is very quite
• No signs of humming or echoes"
He continued to wander around, and actually did the whole day. He explored a lot of the forest, and even saw the bear again too. He didn't approach it this time. The coyote ate when he was hungry, but lost track of time. Soon enough it was already 8:50. He saw the time and thought it would be nice to greet the rabbit. He assumed it would be near the spot that it always was at when 9:03 came around, but instead halfway through his way there he caught sight of it. It was at the outer edge of the forest, but still a good 10 minute walk away from it's usual location, but there was only 5 minutes until 9:03. He ran up to the rabbit and sat in front of it. It just sat there, looking slightly up. He positioned himself to make eye contact with it. They started at each other for a minute, but then he sat down and got out his journal.
"March 11th
I haven't figured out what is going on yet, but there is one thing I pieced together. This is vital information, so don't forget it. I want you, whoever is reading this to know that I-"
The I was barely finished when he made eye contact with the rabbit again to check if it was still there and if it would say hi. The two locked eyes, when suddenly out of nowhere, they were back at where they were when he walked in the forest 24 hours earlier.
The coyote tried to look around, but he couldn't. Instead he moves forward to approach the rabbit. He didn't want to do that- not in that way. But he couldn't stop himself. He wasn't in control. He moved but he didn't want to, he did everything he did yesterday. He had been added to the loop, and the bear had too. The entire forest was cursed to do the same thing over and over for eternity, and he stepped right into it.
Every day when he woke up he longed for the house he looked at every morning. He missed the whistle of the heater and the ticking of the noisy clock. He wanted a sip of tea and to write down everything he had learned in his journal. But he couldn't break free. "Every one of them was playing the same game, just different levels
Dealing with the same hell just different devils.
(jadakiss)" They all had to suffer in this game of a life in which they were the pieces. They all longed to be free, but every one went through at least one moment that made them sad every day. But they couldn't escape the game, So everyday the coyote did his daily routine: reliving March 11th, 2008.
That was until during his routine he heard a new voice. "Im sorry" The deep voice echoed.
"
Who was sorry? Where was this thing? Was it doing this to everyone? Could he stop it?" The coyote thought as he sat down to lock eyes with the rabbit, only a few minutes away from the next reset.
The voice rumbled again. "Run" is all it echoed out.
Suddenly he felt tension release. His legs would have collapsed if he wasn't already sitting down to write in his journal. He saw the rabbit who had been stuck with him for so long that he now called a friend. The rabbit looked at him longingly, and darted out of the forest to leave the loop. As he started to run he felt himself being pulled back more and more. He knew he wouldn't make it. He wasn't as fast as the rabbit. So, not knowing what would happen next, he threw his journal out of the forest. From the center of the forest a huge black cloud whooshed over, making the entire forest shake, but the outside world didn't hear it. When the cloud settled, the loop had begun, but the coyote watched the rabbit he grew so fondly sit next to his beloved journal. The rabbit looked at him with an empathetic look. It said nothing.
He was unsure of what would happen next, maybe if he found the source within the next 24 hour he could get answers. All he knew was that every loop would be started with him falsey seeing the image of the rabbit next to his journal. He strongly felt that the day would start with an illusion- that heartbreaking moment.
If the day goes bad, he knows he is doomed to living the same bad day forever.
