Story: Halloween wasn't too far away and Adela and James had already started preparing. Adela sat on the pile of hay, drawing Cream who had her head sticking out of the her stall and swinging it around. James was in the Tack Room polishing all the saddles occasionally adding some decorations here and there. The Living Tombstone's remix of Spooky Scary Skeletons was playing through the speakers giving them some background noise as they relaxed in the barn. Rain was falling softly outside, and the nickering and whinnying of horses could be heard all around the estate. The lights flickered softly as they usually did, it was a warmish night and the rain wasn't supposed to get worse. A flash of light was heard, followed a few seconds later by a large crack sound, lights went out, rain started bucketing down and the wind was bashing all sides of the barn. "James? You still here?" Adela called out, not wanting to be stuck in there alone. The music continued playing, and horses started causing a fuss. A large bang was heard, followed by the hoofbeats of a horse in a canter. The hoofbeats seemed to start in the barn but soon vanished as the horse seemingly exited the barn. Soon a large light, caused by a torch appeared, causing Adela to give out a shriek.

"It's fine, it is just me, James. Here, got you a torch." James said tossing the torch to Adela. She flicked it on, looking around the barn to check all the horses were there. When Adela got to pearl's store she was shocked, "James, she isn't here, her stall door is broken." Adela said before running out the barn dragging James with her trying to find her. The walked up the path, shivering in their now drenched clothes thanks to the rain. The pair shone their torches up the path seeing the familiar figure of Pearl, but Adela noticed the strange figure of a stallion. He seemed like a walker, but with the limited ability of the torched exact details couldn't be seen. "Um, James, we don't have any walkers at the barn." Adela whispered, watching on. "What walker? Adela only Pearl is there... Let's just get her and hope she is safe." The boy replied, and the pair started a rushed walk. Adela looked up, but even shining the light towards the stallion couldn't give her a detailed look. The two horses had their heads together, but upon noticing the two the stallion turned his head to give a mighty snort. Adela widened her eyes as the look of the stallion sent shivers down her spine. She stood there unable to move until lightning struck and James put a hand on her shoulder. "Adela, come on. We need to get Pearl." He said as lightning struck a final time, causing Adela to jump, and the shrieks of the stallion were heard.

Adela saw the stallion rear once more before he semingly vanished into the darkness, leaving Pearl with the two teens. "She seems fine to me, that's good." James asked, "There was a stallion there James, I saw him. Did you feel shivers when he looked at us?" Adela replied, James shook his head in a no and continued walking. "Adela only Pearl was there, no stallion, just Pearl." James told her, sending her a strange look. The rain had calmed down, and the lightning had started to subside. Adela attached a lead rope to Pearl's halter, leading her into the barn and James turning on the heaters. As they got themselves dry and fed Pearl, Adela couldn't help but wonder what had happened. Why had she felt shivers? Why did she feel paralyzed? Why didn't . After a few more hours fixing things and waiting for the storm to pass they returned to the estate house, telling their story to all the riders and staff that were still awake and leaving Adela to question her sanity. 661 Words

It was dark. It was always dark. So, so dark. You couldn't see 1 inch in front of you, Delineara thought, the drip plop sound of the leaky cell echoing around her. It always did. The sound had become her only comfort. The only constant in an ever changing world. Well, almost. The dark was constant. And so was Sebastian. Always punctual, always prepared, always perfect. So... perfect. Perfectly evil was a better description, Delineara thought bitterly, reaching out a groping hand through the endless dark.
"Hello my dear." A cold and slithering voice hissed through dark. Sebastian she thought bitterly, backing into her cell as far as possible.
"N-no, please!" She called out as Sebastian's tendrils of darkness searched her mind, clawing over the nerves, his laughter drowning out the scream of the poor mare.
"Anything but the Dark Lord"
-
Horses and owners alike had always heard the story of the Dark Lord. Evil this, evil that, magical shadow magic is magical, Delineara died, but Streusal had never believed any of it. She had wandered about her days training relentlessly with her owner,
being a good horse, and always doing as she was told, but on that night, something had been different. Very different. It was a full moon, and a crystal clear night. All the stars were visible, and not a single cloud was visible. Streusal had been let out into the paddock, the night rotation of the fields, when a sudden breeze slid over the fields, clouds that were not there previous now blocking the powerful light of the full moon. She could heat the trees creak as the wind pressed against them, her gaze shifting to a nearby flicker. She walked forward ever so carefully towards the movement, her auburn tail swishing worriedly behind her. All she heard was music, and then all she saw was black. Pitch black, can't see one inch in front of you black, never ending black. The Dark Lord, she thought to herself, willing all her nerves to calm so she could find a way out of this predicament. She tried backing up, but an invisible leash held her fast, she whinnied, but no sound came out, she struggled, but her movements slowed until she felt those horrible claws rake down her mind.
"We meet again dear. Long time no see." and once again, his laughter drowned out her screams. (402 Words)

Story: It was a Fridray the 13th of October. Lucy, the owner of Dark Side Stables tacked up one of the stallions of the stables for a trail ride. It was sunny and hot outside.
Lucy jumped over the horse's back "C'mon guy let's go for a ride" The stallion moved his head in signal of acceptance. So they leaved the stables and entered the forest, but if they knew what was about to happen, they weren't have entered.....
One our passed and the sky started turning dark grey and then...a thunder, a bolt of lightning, then two and three. And it started to rain.
Lucy turned back to the stables but suddenly, as cold breeze she saw another stallion in front of her. He was black as the coal with red eyes, then the big black stallion smilled he had the mouth full of canines. And he had a lot of scars around his body. It was a really scary and macabre scene.
Lucy was scared, very scared and the stallion she was riding was in shock. Then, another thunder and the strange stallion dissapeared. But something changed...
Lucy looked down to his stallion and to her surprise , he had changed his color. From a bright palomino he turned to a dark black with a white marking in his face, it was like a mask.
The Stallion started to buck and Lucy fell. Then in front of her eyes she saw two eyes watching her. Two red eyes. His stallion's eyes had also changed their color, from a sky blue to a dark red.
Then, another thunder and the stallion dissapeared in front of Lucy's eyes.
Since that day, anybody in Dark Side Stables hadn't taken a trail ride in a Fridray the 13th. And all the 13th of October strange noises can be heared from the forest.

*sorry if I have made some grammar mistakes in the story.

Story:

When Vegas was just a colt, something terrifying happened to him. He was new in his stable and, while used to the company of other people and horses, it was his first time away from his mother.

At first things seemed to be going well - he was having fun with his training and even had a little goat that grazed with him and the two lazed around the barn. He was getting carrots and apples and even sort of liked being brushed. But he was beginning to miss his mother a lot.

One day he woke up and things didn't seem quite right. The smell of pumpkin was in the air and everyone seemed to be very busy. They were distracted during the morning routine and afternoon came and went with no training session. Vegas was beginning to feel a bit blue and now he really wanted to go home. He wasn't ready to for all this change. He wasn't ready to grow up!

The day got darker and it was almost time to go inside for the night, but the young colt still had a lot of energy. He saw his person coming out into the field and ran over to greet them, making uneven strides with his long, rangy legs.

The person said something to him, but whatever it was he couldn't understand. Then they pulled something out of their pocket and he heard a strange noise - one he had never heard before. Instantly he began to feel uneasy.

Then they removed his halter - his beloved halter from home! - and instead put the strange new one on him, fixing it in place before he had time to realize what was happening.

He reared back in surprise, and heard that cursed sound again! It was louder now. Not just louder, it was CLOSER! He neighed and began to sweat, ears pinned. He rubs his head against his side but this new tack is firmly attached. His sides begin to have and he races around the paddock, hooves kicking up big chunks of dirt and grass.

His person is racing after him, shouting and waving their arms. He doesn't trust them now, not after they put this strange, noisy thing on him! The noise is so loud it is the only thing he can hear now, a sharp ringing that makes his head hurt and seems to sound out every time his hooves make contact with the ground.

When he gets to the fence he sees something that makes him freeze instantly. There are a bunch of tiny little monsters getting out of cars and walking right up to the fence! Some of them are glowing and some are difficult to see against the darkening sky, but he can make out large bags in each of their hands, and their voices are high and sharp. His knees shake. These are the only things he has ever seen that scare him more than children!

What is this strange place he's been taken to, and why can't he go back home?

Suddenly his person catches up to him, and he feels them rest a hand on his flank. He is still breathing hard, but the noise has fallen silent and he dares not move for fear of waking up the haunted tack. He feels gentle hands sliding over the halter and suddenly it is lifted off, and he turns his head away from the fence.

He can't understand anything his person is saying, but with an uneasy gait he follows them back to the barn, and goes inside where he can smell a bucket of oats waiting for him.

The rest of the night he did not so much as look outside.

The next day everything was back to normal - the pumpkins were gone and he never saw the "haunted tack" again.

Sorry my story wasn't very scary. I was having trouble figuring out a good level of spookiness for CS and so I wrote a story about what would be spooky for a horse! =) I hope that's okay.

Story:
474/1000
The horses kicked at their stable doors, threatening to snap the hinges. I rushed through the barn with stable hands to try calm them. It was early morning, long before feeding time, the sun only faintly lit the ground in a sickly yellow light. In the corner, a stallion looked out across the foggy fields. Out of all of the horses, this stallion was the only one not unsettled. He seemed oblivious to everything but outside, he ignored me as I stroked his neck. I slipped a halter on him and asked him to follow, but he stood in place. As the fog started to recede into the forest, he threw his head and charged out of his stable, pushing me to the side. Barely standing, I just managed to halt him before he ran off. I slowly walked him down the gravel path, through the pastures where our outside herds bundled together in the middle of the field, their legs trembled and they stood alert. An owl called, spooking a few of the younger horses. They bolted and my stallion tilted towards them as he pranced nervously, stepping to the side. He called to them, no answer. The open fields began to fade into the sparse woods at the edge of the property. The orange leaves had recently fallen, leaving the trees bare with jagged branches. I heard hooves that weren't the stallion's. I stopped the stallion and we stood in silence. Not a sound from the forest besides a horse making it's way towards us. Did someone escape? My horse whinnied quietly and raised his head. In a sudden cloud of fog, a shadow of a horse stood before us. They cried, a horrible shriek that echoed through the empty woods. I felt my arm pull as the stallion bolted, the rope burned my hand and I let go. The unknown horse reared and slowly walked forwards, breathing heavily, it almost seemed to be exhaling fog. It towered over me and stared straight into my eyes, my spine shivered.

The next few days, the staff were convinced that I had seen everything. That maybe I slipped on a wet rock and hit my head, leaving the stallion to make his way back to the stables. But I knew that wasn't true. Every morning the fog rolled in, thicker than the day before. At night, the echoes of a calling creature and the replies of our own horses. In particular, our demonic horses were in a constant frenzy and out for blood. But of course, nothing I saw was real. Right?

When the month passed, the midnight horrors stopped, only to find one of the mares was mysteriously in foal. She was not bred, and no stallion had been with her. When she foaled the next year, the newborn filly was... something else.

Story: The legends of this mythical beast are never recounted the same way, well, those who had kept enough sanity or had recovered from the reoccurring nightmares to relay the tale. Some didn't dare to think of what they saw or experienced. Some stories start when they saw it in the corner of their eye as they wandered down the mountain trail, path overgrown from disuse. The winds howled and the decaying trees rattled, losing whatever leaves they had left clinging to their branches. One mare, with her ears pressed firmly against her skull whispered that as they passed a jagged mouth of a cave she could hear something talking in hushed, silvery tones. The grey mare was only able to say 3 words before she lost her courage and had to hide behind her pasture mate. "Fear the dark". Other's remember a thick aroma in the air, scents varying from rotting apples to a wildfire and something sending a shiver up their spine as if something was watching them from the shadows. But no matter how quickly turned around, they never saw anything but a single spot on the ground untouched by sunlight, even in an open field and watching it slowly soak up the sun again to appear as if nothing happened.
