world;all the people in Eles had heard the rumors - it was murmured by housewives as they went about their day-to-day errands, whispered among the children as they frolicked outside. many a drunk had stumbled into the tavern proclaiming they'd seen it with their own two eyes during the daylight.
it was a four-legged creature said to roam about the woods and mountains, collecting wandering souls led astray by the mournful hymn of the wind in the mountains at night. when the full moon rose, there was something about the air, something about the trees, that caused a single individual in the town to rise out of their bed and trek into the mountains, alone and unarmed.
it began a few years ago, when the weather turned cold. the continent of Antal was not always such a barren, frigid landscape. it was once a lush, green paradise where the weather was always warm and balmy year-round. then, one day it began to snow, and hasn’t stopped since.
the people questioned whether the gods themselves were punishing them for something. some continue to try and gain their favor back to this day. most, however, have resigned themselves to the cold, bundling up and hunkering down.
not much has changed in the lazy town of Eles, except for one thing - the arrival of
it.
---
on a sleepy morning before the full moon was expected to arise, the townspeople went about their daily business, collecting wood, tending to the livestock, tidying the house. however, an air of unease filled the town and its people, as they all knew what would be coming tonight.
“Oh, I bet it’ll be that Jakob….he’s always lazing around.” one woman chided.
“I’m not sure, what if it’s Cyrus? perhaps the gods really are punishing us for something…” another replied.
No one knew for sure who would be the one to walk out of town, but one thing was certain. And that was, that same four-legged creature would return them safely to the watchtowers without fail.

(some more backstory & worldbuilding information bc i couldn't really go very in-depth in that little drabble thing)
the continent of Antal was once a lush paradise. the continent was originally built as a paradise to reward their most faithful, like an Eden of sorts. its people prospered, and lived in lavish luxury, with all the food they could eat and resources they could use. however, living on such comforts, they became complacent. as the centuries passed, they neglected to pass on history and tradition. they forgot about the rest of the world, and became caught up in their perfect paradise. eventually, the people stopped paying homage to the gods, and many forgot about them altogether. the gods became dissatisfied with the complacency of the people and sent the continent into a period of eternal winter to punish them.
today, the people have adapted to their circumstances with a bitter resignation. they continue to survive despite the circumstances.
a mysterious phenomenon has begun to occur, in which a single individual will wander out of their bed during the full moon and into the mountains. originally, they would not come back.
however, a being appeared on the mountain. a four-legged creature with long, silky fur. since then, the individual has returned to the gates of the town, dazed and confused, but recalling one thing - the silhouette of the creature that saved them.
