as a child, astrid had always been incredibly curious. she was a very inquisitive kalon from the get go, but her dreams and insatiable thirst for knowledge and information drove her to be so much more. she consumed books like candy, absorbed every word, picture, and vocabulary word highlighted in yellow with a ferocious and some might even say terrifying vigor. nothing was out of astrid's reach; she was unstoppable; she practically had the world at her hands, except for one thing...

space. space was like a slap in the face to the young, aspiring astrid. her knowledge and intelligence was unmatched in almost everything, but she had yet to learn everything she possibly could. space, the stars, the universe itself, was still a mystery to her. she could never touch it, never explore it, never learn its secret and crack open its metaphorical pandora's box. forever was she doomed to never know much of anything about space, not the things that truly mattered, and it upset her. it left a hole in her chest, like a black hole, that began to consume her inside and out. all her focus was directed towards space, after that. she dropped books she'd been reading for over a week and left it all to rot in her room, while each night she climbed up the tall, looming stairs of the observatory to stargaze. people soon became a faded page in the ever-expanding book that was her life, forgotten, unread, despite how many people tried to reach out to her.

astrid became consumed with the desire to learn about space, to actually go to it, to see everything that space had to offer her. she became an astronomer, earned her way up to the top, consumed everything anyone had ever learned about it and then began to study the stars on her own. she was always alone, working in her lab, stargazing in the observatory, or experimenting and studying. there was scarce a moment she wasnt working, and some took to calling her, "the astronomer", the name 'astrid' becoming a foreign name on people's tongues.

rumors arose, from the few who had managed to catch a glimpse of her eyes underneath all that hair, that she had stars in her eyes, for all that she longed to be among the stars themselves and explore the universe. ever higher, astrid rose above the ground, even the clouds, until she was so high the ground was no longer visible. no one bothered to try to convince her to come down anymore, and she stood atop her pedestal of prestige alone and cold, surrounded by the frigid embrace of space. even the stars could not warm her, could not bring her any joy, but still she went on, despite her internal protests, telling her to go back. the place she had wanted to see since childhood was in reach, she could go there, finally, just a little further...

but then the accident happened. no one truly knows what happened, no one was ever told, no one was there, but everyone knew that the once famed astronomer suddenly became blind in one eye. what was once beautiful, starry-eyed cherry red had become a dull icy blue; she was asymmetrical; hideous; a monster. some say that she had reached too far, took one too many a step, unable to reach out and grapple onto the space above, intangible in her hands. the one thing she loved finally blew up in her face, they said. now ruined, her reputation tarnished, her self and her worth no longer whole, astrid further hid herself away, and eventually abandoning the place she had called home, fleeing in the night. since that night, not a soul has ever heard of her again, though some claim to still see the ghost of the astronomer in the observatory, one red eye, one blue, gazing upon what she could never reach.
