why are they happy?:
I guess the time I felt happiest was my junior year of high school. It was reaching the end of my sophomore year, the summer air was just growing warmer, that I heard the good news. I had spent the entire year working and hoping and dreaming that I could do it, that I could be the next drum major. I had spent days out on the field, practicing fundamentals, playing through our pre-game music... I was ready. I had applied halfway through the year and watched as the votes started pouring in. Let me tell you, watching people vote for something you're running for... Now that is anxiety-inducing. Anyways, voting came and went, the votes were counted. The last day of school, the livespeaker crackled to life during my band class. The room was silent, as many had applied but they all knew only one of us could win. As the principal spoke, it seemed as though dust was falling from the ceiling, bringing life back into the old band room. Then I heard my name. I couldn't even process it over the loud applause. I numbly looked around, and then it hit me. I did it. I made it. I'm drum major... My dream. It's finally here.
On my way out of the classroom, my best friend, Maddison, ran up to me, screaming. "You did it Katie, you did it!!" she'd screeched, jumping up and down and hugging me. I'd done it, my dream had come true. On my way through the halls, people I didn't even recognize clapped me on the back, grinning, congratulating me. My friends glowed when they saw me, gushing about how much I deserved it. And me? I was grinning like a madman the entire day. My other friends, Oz and May, they're dating though I'm not supposed to know that, were so excited for me. Maddie and May threw a party that night, inviting everyone they could think of. Maddie's house was filled by the time I got there, and I had partied long into the night and into the wee hours of the morning.
The next morning I'd woken up on the couch at Maddie's house, surrounded by red solo cups and streamers scattered across the floor. Pizza crusts and cake crumbs littered the ground and there was a sticky spot where someone had spilled their rootbeer. The speaker was tipped over, the microphone dangling from a cord. Sunlight poured in through the window and as I sat up, it hit me once again. This was my party. My party. I stood up, stretching, and Maddie appeared from the kitchen, bringing the warm scent of bacon and maple syrup with her. "Morning, sleeping beauty!" she sang, gathering me in her arms for a sticky hug. I'd grinned, returning the hug. "Morning Mads." I'd said, glancing around the room, "quite the party you had." She chuckled, picking up a cup and flicking it across the room into the trashcan. "Yeah, it was pretty crazy." she commented, a mischievous grin written across her face. "Want some breakfast? I've got pancakes and bacon!" She chirped, dancing into the kitchen and making two plates full of sticky goodness.
After breakfast, Maddie had gotten to work cleaning up the house, situating me in front of the tv. She wouldn't let me help, so I happily sat in front of the tv as Jeopardy blasted through the speakers. After several hours of cleaning, Maddie had finally finished. We'd pulled out Cards Against Kalonity (Cards Against Humanity, I'm so sorry lmao) and played with May, who had just woken up, until 11:30, when I had to return home.
I had done it. I was a drum major. I had never been so happy, so proud, so... Excited. The next two years we're going to be great, and they definitely were.
That year was long and hard, but worth every second. I had long rehearsals, I learned all the new commands, I learned the different style of marching. I learned to lead. These guys had chosen me, I couldn't let them down.
Our first game, I was destroyed with anxiety. I was shaking like a leaf as we lined up to march in, my fists clenched. As we stood in our positions, I realized it was time. I blew the whistle and called loudly, "Mark time mark!" And we stepped off. I led them down onto the field and I marched to my position, listening as the band launched into the fight song. I marched off the field as though I had raised those guys as my own. Once off the field, I stood to the side to conduct.
That year's halftime show was my all time favorite. We played popular music from the radio, something the crowd seemed to enjoy. The band did amazing and all I could do was gush. It was a great year.
I have some wip art on the way!! <3
