polaris had always enjoyed cool nights like this one; a gentle wind caressing
fall leaves, the smell of crisp air, the familiar song of the forest. she spared
a glance at the fire she had set up just moments ago, and something about
it... spoke to her the kalon stepped up slowly, eyes still trained intently on
the flames before her. not inches away from her face was something so small,
so gentle, yet with so much potential. this small fire lapping at the cool air
above it and eating away at warm sticks below it could be so much bigger,
cause so much damage, yet she had been able to condense it here, in this
small pile of wood and rock. she shivered; so odd to her how something so
strong could be contained so easily.
nothing - neither thought nor hesitation - crossed polaris' mind as she picked
up a stick from beneath the fire and began to run, allowing the burning tip
to touch anything she passed. it was only a few moments before a once cold,
peaceful, quiet forest became a ruin of charcoal and angry, growling fire.
the undergrowth the kalon had lit aflame curled and wilted, blackened and
turned to ash by the heat. no more did she feel a cool breeze or hear chirping
crickets; now there was nothing but warmth comparable to that of the summer
sun and the sound of crackling ember and falling branches.
it was at least five minutes before polaris' breath caught up to her and the
mottled kalon slowed to a halt. the realization of what she had done dawned
upon her as she threw the stick away from herself, and she didn't bother to
look back towards the rising smoke and fire behind her as she slipped away.
