story;
The first time Freya ever saw a sparking flame was a long time ago, she was barely able to walk. Her house was not big, her family barely moved around in it, their lands were mostly fields of grass. At the time she was really young, but she could still roam around their crop fields and their little barn. It was hard to amaze Frey, most would try bringing colorful things or noisy toys but she'd probably look away towards a place with lots of light. Lights truly amazed her, they simply did, in any form or shape. Though her favorite source of light was probably the little shimmering dots she'd see dancing around he grass during warm summer nights. The child ignored the way adults called them, for her these were Lite Buggies, her pure source of light and fun.
It was one night when she followed the path of little lights towards the open fields, suddenly wind started raising and water drops started falling from the sky. Freya looked up right when the sky lit up with a beaming white light which reached a dried tree, the dead vegetation was suddenly wrapped in dancing warm lights. The kid's eyes widened as her paws unconsciously drove her closer to the seducing flames that were too strong to be put out by the rain. The reds, oranges and yellow sparks just seemed to intense to simply die down again a few drops of water. She could see little sparkling glittery pieces flying around which just reminded her of the little Lite Buggies, with a kid so easily impressed it was predictable what would happen next. Her tiny paw reached to make contact with the torching tree, but it hurt, it burnt a small patch of her fur and made her skin reddish. Freya, startled, pulled back and walked backwards calling for her mommy or daddy to come get her. Her little mews and whines of pains were hard to hear across the storm but her family was already looking for her and found her shortly and took her home.
Since then Fay has been really careful with fire, getting lost while looking at it, but still so cautious and clever. Sometimes in dreams she still sees the flaring tree and the smell of burnt fur, but from the whole dream she only really pays attention to the dancing sparks.

There are so many tropes to fire. There is death and destruction, birth and rebirth, warmth, love, passion, fury. The list goes on, and how one interprets its symbolism depends on the context of the fire.

One that Keahi never really thought about was using fire to cause death to create life. Living is like reading a book, she decided as she watched the murmuring fire wane slightly in the breeze. There are themes that repeat themselves.

Her food was stuck onto a stick, both blackened to Hell and back, but Keahi knew that the inside of it was fine. Probably. It was a fish she'd snatched out of a half-frozen river a few clicks back. The ice was nearly a half a meter thick, and she'd had to follow it to a particularly vicious bend where the water flowed so powerfully that the spray it kicked up almost froze her in her spot.

The benefit there was that the fish were practically jumping out to meet her. She simply needed to catch one.

And one it was — just one. She'd missed all the others; this one was so small that her jaws had nearly enclosed it entirely as she plucked it out of midair.

Keahi was looking at the fish now, almost despondent at her sad meal since cooking it made the fish appear even smaller somehow. But as she gazed upon the little fire that she'd created, a warmth unfurled in her belly that food couldn't compare to.

At home, everything was warm. There was never a day when the sun wasn't out, burning more than shining, but the heat outdoors was nothing compared to how it felt in the firerooms.

Her people were, for lack of a better world, fire workers; they were metallurgists, sculptors, welders, but most important to everyone was that they all handled the flames in one way or another.

When she was born, Keahi lived in a bubble of proud, excited praise. Her color, they said to one another. So vibrant! As if she were born in the forges and stepped out, molded by the hand of a god!

Keahi didn't know what her color meant to her then, but it clearly meant a lot to her people so she took their compliments with poise and grace. Keahi was proud, but only because they were.

And now, it didn't seem as enchanting as it did when she was younger — at home, Keahi was a phoenix in the midst of ashes, but here, she was a violent welt, a blight on the purity of the white wasteland.

Keahi looked back at the roasted fish still left on its makeshift skewer, but her appetite had long left her. It now wore a black layer of skin burnt to a crisp from overexposure, and seeing another reminder of her foreignness, her lack of belonging, gave her a sudden urge to kick snow over the fire she'd created.

The cold had yet to seep into her limbs — she'd spent long enough here that her physiology was beginning to adapt, and her coat had grown thicker — so it wouldn't matter much if she put the fire out. Keahi sunk a paw into a nearby drift and paused when another thought crossed her mind.

It'd been so long since she'd dwelled on things like this. They were baseless observations and useless in her survival, but Keahi still found herself analyzing the irony of her situation. Her black paw entrenched in the white snow — it had to symbolize something.

Everything about her, everything that she came from, loved, and stood for was completely juxtaposed by her current setting and situation. It was a black and white contrast, literally; though her mane had thickened to protect her from the elements, it still maintained its fiery vibrancy, but she stood out far too much, far too lonely against the snow; and Keahi's life depended on heat, and the closest semblance to that was the viciously passionate raging of the riverbend where she got her food.

Mirthless laughter bubbled up unheeded from her throat. Keahi sat back, settling on watching the flickering embers struggle for life as twilight then dusk swallowed the white land in darkness.

"Wildfire," they nicknamed her at home. Because of her speed and tendency for destruction as she zipped through fireroom workbenches and knocked everything over.

Here, that meant something too. She was Wildfire, but here, there was nothing to burn, nothing to raze to the ground, nothing to cause a repeat reminder of what happened at home. But here, there was nothing to love, nothing to live for.

Keahi let her glowing ashes die. Her fish was still smoking, but just barely.

There are themes that repeat themselves, Keahi repeated internally. Fire is my birth, my death. My love, my anger.

A silent snowfall began. White settled gently on smoldering gray. My history. My home.
