Callisto is a calm, shy spirit who has a ferocious ambition that she keeps under lock and key. While she would never hurt a fly, it's sometimes quite difficult for her to make the choice she knows she should make or the one that while furthering her goals, will haunt her conscience until she confesses to her mistake. But with goals that require time and effort, it's often hard to decide whether you should ask for a rain check because you're a few paragraphs of code behind schedule, or put off the release date of a customer's new software.

Her fingers flew furiously over the keyboard as Callisto cursed herself viciously. She was behind, so far behind. Technically, it wasn't her fault she'd been working on this late and fell asleep last night. Nor was it her fault that she'd been working late every night this past week and woke up at noon, but her stupid boss had placed a stupid promise on the company website: Get it late, Get it free. If she didn't finish this website in time, that lost customer's payment was coming out of her salary. She couldn't let that happen. No, she wasn't exactly in need of money, but she had plans for that bonus she'd been working so hard to get, and if she missed the release date... She didn't want to think about it. Thus, from noon until night she had sat at that desk letting HTML and Javascript fly from her sore, blistering fingers, but now that could all be doomed. Seven hours. She'd missed seven hours of work, and even if she did work from home, it still mattered. That was seven hours that could never be regained, and she had to make them up.

Slumping back in her chair, Callisto sighed quietly, shaking out her hands and taking a breather before she tested her code for mistakes. She rolled her chair across her bedroom to pick up her cell phone, and as she reached towards her bedside table the glaringly red numbers of her alarm clock blinked brightly through the darkened area. 8:00 pm. Callisto froze. She had been supposed to meet Mona at the restaurant 3 hours ago. This was her last chance to prove that she didn't only care about work, at least without letting the cat out of the bag; Her last chance to put the computer down and let her girlfriend know that she actually did care. She knew she'd failed, and that's why the increasingly furious texts came as no surprise when she finally picked up her phone with a heart full of dread.

Conversation with Mona Oleander
4:53 pm
Mona: Hey Calli! I arrived at the restaurant! Just let them know you're with me and they'll know where to bring you!
5:15 pm
Mona: Calli? Are you on your way? I know it's rush hour, so I get it. Just let me know where you're at! :)
5:22 pm
Mona: Calli? You there?
5:31 pm
Mona: Calli, I don't want to believe you'd stand me up again for no good reason. Can you let me know what's going on?
5:43 pm
Mona: Okay, by now it's apparent you aren't coming. I'm still up for a movie at my house tonight, though, if you want to make up for it?
6:02 pm
Mona: Really Calli? What the heck is this! You aren't answering your phone... I even knocked on your door! What is going on?!?
7:57 pm
Mona: I've been crying my eyes out for the past hour and a half and Cadence, who currently hates my guts, has been comforting me. I can't do this anymore Calli. I'm sorry, and I love you, but we're done.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At that, Callisto felt tears starting to track silvery streams down her face. Hands shaking rapidly, she dialed Mona's number in a desperate attempt to fix the mess she'd created. She held the quivering device to her ear as the dial tone sounded, and squeezed her eyes together tightly in an attempt to compose herself. Then, the ringing stopped.
"So now you decide to call... You couldn't even bother to let me know you weren't coming?" Sounded a melodic voice from the other end of the telephone line.
"M-Mona I'm sorry..." Callisto croaked, trying to get the words her brain was scrambling together to actually come out her mouth, but as she tried to explain, she got cut off.
"Calli, I don't want to hear it. You forgot about me completely, again." She responded sadly, with the same voice Callisto had popped out of bed each morning wanting to hear. The same voice that she wanted to keep full of energy, and had instead drained in an effort to fill it with joy.
"I-I got caught up in work. You know how I am, and I just wanted-"
"We both know you don't need the money, and that if you did, I'd give it to you. We're done Calli. This is the end, no matter how much neither of us wants it to be." She finalized, hanging up the phone and leaving Calli with tears streaming down her face, the now silent phone clutched to her chest as she whispered quietly to it in the dark room, lying haphazardly across her bed.
"I just wanted to get you a ring."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few minutes later the heartbroken girl retreated to her desk once more and escaped into the land of code, the very thing that condemned her, in hopes to forget the worries of this world by delving into a place where emotions didn't exist and everything happened the way you planned for it to go. She typed late into the night, eyes staring at the screen while glossed over with a despairing, far away look of emptiness. After all, who needed sleep anyway? Sleep was what ruined her.
Coding was her escape and tonight, Callisto desperately needed that escape.
