What do they do to help wildlife?

Well, have you heard of ecotourism? Is it possible to love nature to death? The growing crowds in our national and state parks and in natural areas of all sorts are telling us the answer may be "yes." Even places as remote as the Antarctic are suddenly inundated with tourists and there is some concern that the people may be disrupting the nesting of penguins. In the popular national parks of Kenya, vehicles full of tourists are so common that predatory animals may use them as cover when stalking their prey. These are signs that people who come to natural areas to see animals in their natural setting are changing the behavior of these animals, probably to the detriment of the animals. One of the reasons for this problem is that people often go into a wild area with expectations of seeing the dramatic events shown in wildlife specials on television. At the very least, they want to get close enough to some spectacular animal to get a dramatic photograph or two as a souvenir of the trip. Efforts to see or photograph wildlife close up in the short time available on a vacation trip requires intruding on the wildlife, often at times when the animals are resting, breeding, or taking care of young. As the California Department of Fish and Game points out in one of their brochures for ecotourists "There's a fine line between viewing and victimising wildlife."

The "flip side" of this problem, of course, is that Eco-tourists spend lots of money, important in the economies of impoverished nations and rural areas of North America. Most of the wildlife areas would not exist without these tourist dollars or at least would not be managed as well. The solution to the problem is managing the behaviour of Eco-tourists to minimise their effects on wildlife. If you are visiting a natural area, here are some things you can do to reduce your impact:

1. Carry a good pair of binoculars so you do not have to get so close to observe birds and mammals.
2. Stay on the designated roads and trails; use blinds and observation platforms if available.
3. Be patient, be quiet, and move slowly near wildlife. Spend time watching individual animals rather than quickly moving on once you have added a species to your list of things seen.
4. Spend time observing the little things, not just the "charismatic megafauna" Notice the flowers and insects, which can be especially good subjects for photography. Become a butterfly and bug watcher. What they do is every bit as dramatic as what happens with birds and mammals, just on a smaller scale.
5. Go out with a guide or friend who knows an area. This will increase your probability of seeing wildlife and reduce your impact on it if your guide is sensitive.
6. Be willing to go out when the animals are out, which is often evening and early morning rather than disturbing them during the day so you can see them at your convenience.
7. If you are driving through a wildlife area, stay in the car as much as possible. It can serve as a movable blind, and you are likely to see more natural behaviour.
8. Nature preserves and wildlife areas are notoriously short of funds for management, so donate money to those you use. This is especially true in "third-world" countries.

I follow these steps and easily save wild-life without harming them.

Axel smiled with clear joy, It was obvious he was excited for his first day at the Shelter.
He had once brought in a beloved pet Squirrel that was getting to wild, And after learning
about what the Shelter does to animals, Axel decided to Volunteer. He was too excited to
greet the people who he passed by.

Entering the Cabin Like Building he waved happily to the kalon at the counter. Axel kindly
told the desk lady that he was a Volunteer today. The Kalon smiled, Bringing him to the
back of the Building, Where he was supposed to be paired with a 'Senior Volunteer' To learn
how to take care of the animals.

Axel's first stop was the reptile room, His Favorite category of animals. "Excuse me, But
What Reptiles do you home here?" He Asked Politely. The Volunteer smiled brightly, "We
home any reptiles, Do you have a favorite?" Axel's face grew into a giant happy blaze, He
nodded, Trying to hide his happiness. "Yea, Do you guys have a Albino Alligator?" He seemed
a bit flustered by the Question.

The Senior Volunteer nodded, "Yes, We have one, His name is Snow. Would you like to visit
him? Snow is very friendly," Axel smiled, Almost racing ahead as he saw the reptile house.
The Volunteer followed behind, Knowing Axel's happiness.

As they walked in, Axel examined the many snakes, Lizards, Gators, Looking for one specific
Albino. The Volunteer showed Axel to the back, Where all the food and bedding was stored.
The Volunteer padded to the Alligator Supplies, And a large iron door. "Is this where Snow
stays?" Alex asked, Still very hyped.

"Yes, And it feeding time! Would you like to help Axel?" The Volunteer asked in her always
caring tone. Axel nodded, Picking up the bucket of skinned fish for Snow. He watched as
the Kalon opened the door, Seeing a wonderful swap recreation. He gasped in astonishment
as it was easy to spot Snow. He was a wonderful white color, With the loveliest Red eyes.
        "Woah..."

The Gator had eyed Axel, As if he knew that He had her food. Snow crawled to Him, Sitting
there and waiting for him to pass the food. The Volunteer nudged Axel, "It's alright, Snow
wont attack you." Axel smiled a bit nervously now, He had always thought that when he met
an Albino Alligator that he would be proud and confident, But really he was nervous and shy.

Axel dropped the bucket, And grabbed a large mouse Dropping it by Snow. Snow looked at
Axel with a cocked head, Almost as if he was saying 'Are you okay? I wont bite..' Snow grabbed
the mouse and swallowed it hole, Happily tipping over the bucket for more. Axel snickered
slightly as the Volunteer panicked to pick up the food.

Snow looked at Axel, Axel looked at Snow. It was amazing, Seeing an Albino Alligator up close.
He crouched down, Looking at Snow in the eyes. Snow smiled in his alligator way as he tipped
his nose with Axel's. Axel smiled, Standing up as she gave Snow one more mouse as a treat.

As Axel waved goodbye to Snow, He realized something. He had met one of life's most wonderful
creatures, Getting close to it, Even 'kissing' it. He smiled brightly, Knowing that helping today, Did
something big to the park. Making all of these animals happy and safe in this park, Was his goal.

It's a long story.
I hadn't meant for it to turn out the way it did, but I don't regret it. I made a mistake. Yes, it was stupid, and yes, it ruined the life I thought I had, but look at me now...Nothing could be better.

You want to know what happened? Then listen.

"SO, I'M GOING TO BE TAKING A CRAFT
OVER IN INTERNATIONAL WATERS
WITHOUT PERMISSION, WHICH,
BY DEFINITION, MAKES ME A PIRATE."

- the martian

She was pretty, for someone who had been working in the mines for most of her life. The kind of kalon that would catch everyone's eye, but once they actually began to talk to her, they realized that she wasn't right for them. That didn't stop me from letting her think she was special, even if she did get annoying at times.

Maybe it was because of growing up in a kalon-eat-kalon world, having to steal to eat and fight with my siblings over scraps from the adults. Maybe I was sick of her constant pestering. Maybe I just wasn't feeling it that day. I don't know what caused me to do it, I just know that it happened.

She was asking for water, a playful smirk on her face, and complimenting how I looked in my guard's armor. She had stopped working, but that was normal. She often did that so she could mess with the guards. Today, she wanted to mess with me. She reached out her soft paws to touch my arm, and my vision went red.

I slapped the worker.

I could see the blood welling in the deep gash across her left cheek, and inwardly knew that I would be punished. I had broken one of the few rules I was bound under; I must never touch the workers. It was obvious that no stone or tool had made the wound, and I was assigned to their sector today. There was no escape from the blame.

Her brother was nearby. The two were usually within eyesight of each other, so I should have been expecting it. Almost at once, the male charged at me, shoving me into the wall to protect his sister from further harm. I had no intention of hitting her again, but he didn't know that. I tried to grab my dagger, but the male held my arms pressed behind me. All I was able to do was struggle. Other guards rushed to my aide from adjacent tunnels, yet I still wasn't able to get him off. We were dragged apart, and that was the last I saw of him or his sister. I don't know what happened to them after that.

But I do know what happened to me. My fellow guards dragged me to a back cavern, dropped me onto a chair, and then left. It was dark, but the mushrooms gave off enough glow to inspect myself for damage. My shoulders were sore from being thrown into hard stone, and it was apparent that they would be sporting purple bruises within a few hours. Other than that, my elbows were abraded but I was mostly unscathed. Unfortunately, the real damage wasn't to my body.

My captain came in the room soon after, a scowl on his face. He didn't have to say anything for me to know what was going on.

A guard who couldn't obey orders wasn't a guard at all.

I took off the colors that I had displayed so proudly since I was young, placing them in the captain's outstretched paw. He wordlessly pointed to the door, and I got up. Pausing at the door, I pulled off my armor, leaving the rough undergarments that were standard for all citizens of the mines. And then I walked out, leaving behind the one job that I had known all my life. They would want me to report to the barracks for reassignment, probably to something degrading. I didn't feel like spending the next 15 years of my life scrubbing chipped dishes and mopping dusty floors. So I turned and ran the other way. No one was there to stop me. Guards weren't supposed to disobey orders. But I was no longer a guard.

The caves felt darker without my protection. I had managed to smuggle my dagger out under my pant leg, but it did little to quell my fears. Mushrooms didn't provide much against the endless caverns that I spent most of my days in. I mentally traced the path to the exit. It wasn't too far. But what now? I've been pretty much exiled. I don't have a home to go back to. Nothing to fall back on.

I mulled over these thoughts as I trotted towards my new life, seeing the walls but not seeing them. It was strange, to not be able to call myself part of this place anymore. But...oddly freeing, in a way. Maybe I could explore the galaxy? I've always wanted to see the far side of Yzanzib...

A faint glow dashed across my line of sight, distracting me. It was similar to the glow from a mushroom, but mushrooms didn't move. I froze, staring around in the inky darkness that my eyes were so accustomed to. After a moment, I made out the shape of some sort of creature. It had a triangular face, large eyes, a short muzzle, and huge, tufted ears. Spindly limbs extended from its small body, and a long tail was curled above it. I remembered reading in one of the few archive books the guards had access to that it was an indigenous creature called a squirmoonk. I also happened to know that they were used for target practice on offdays. The glowing blue cells on their chests and sides made them easy marks for throwing knives.

I crouched down, my eyes centered on the male--males always had three chest cells, while females had two--and softly called to him. "Hey, c'mere. You don't wanna stay down here." It sniffed at me curiously, most likely hoping I had a tasty insect or fungus to offer. I didn't, but I still held out my paw towards him.

The dark brown creature edged closer, its nose twitching. Making small, comforting sounds, I lowered myself closer to the ground. After a moment, he crawled into my palm, and then up my arm to get onto my shoulders. I shuddered as his claws dug into my fur, leaving a creeping feeling down my arm. The creature settled in my neck fur, and I couldn't help but smile. At least someone didn't hate me for what I did. "I think I'll name you...Decere?"

Decere lifted his head, blinking his large eyes at me. "I'll take that as a yes," I grinned. Maybe this whole exile thing wouldn't be so terrible after all.

And it wasn't. I'm here now, aren't I?

Image

->>"This doesn't have anything to do with your job! This is some deranged escapade!!"

Be patient, dear customer. The story isn't done.

I had a natural charisma with the animals, so it seemed. Decere helped me discover that. He stayed with me through the night. I was surprised to see that he hadn't left while I was asleep. But he liked his spot on my bruised shoulder, where he could see out into the world around us. Even though it hurt when he leaned back, I let him stay. He was a companion, after all. And he was adorable. Who could say no? Certainly not lonely me.

Decere was the first of many. Getting him out of those caves made me feel better about what had caused me to meet him in the first place. I was given a small ship as payment for one of my earlier jobs, and went on my way. After a time, I began to earn a name for myself...a space pirate by definition, known for his adeptness at retrieving living creatures. Rescuing lost pets, protecting hunted populations, searching for breeding pairs to be brought into captivity...you name it, if it was for a good cause and I got paid, I did it. Not many know of how I got to this job, so I can still use the threat of turning marauders in to the Government. If I actually did turn them in, they'd probably take me in too, for fleeing from whatever duty they had planned for me next. Fortunately, most ill-minded customers turned tail before I had to make do on my words. It isn't a such a bad life.

That'll be 10 government notes, please. And mum's the word about this, eh?

->>"Wha?! I haven't even bought anything yet!"

Sure ya did, kid. You asked for a story, and asking in these parts is talking business.

->> "So, you really don't know what happened to the two workers?"

I admit that wasn't entirely true. I did run into them again...

I just needed bait for a trap. A customer had asked for a pair of rappidappans for a zoo they were working on, and were paying handsomely. Nasty, winged beasts with sharp fangs and a tendency to bite, but they had a love for shiny objects. I noticed a small junk shop had landed nearby and seemed open. Hopefully, they'd have a few random objects that were bright enough to attract my bounty. Decere was curled in his usual place as I strolled over and opened the door, ducking my head inside. One side of the shop was neatly organized, everything in its own place. The other was a complete mess, items thrown here and there and piled upon each other like marshmallows being prepared for a fire. I raised my lip slightly at the disorder. Raising my eyes, I spotted a bored looking female slouching over a counter, her grimy fur matted and unbrushed. What a dump.

I cleared my throat, and she snapped up, staring me directly in the eyes. That was...unnerving. "Um...do you have anything shiny?"

"Shiny?"
She repeated slowly, then nodded. She turned towards the pile of junk behind her, shuffling through it and pulling out anything with even a bit of luster. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I saw her raise a paw to brush at a pale marking on her cheek. "Will these work?"

I nodded, fishing a pawful of coins out of my pocket and began to count them out. "How much do I owe you?"

A male kalon stepped down the stairs before she could respond, beginning to say something to the female kalon, but when he saw me he stopped short.

Him.
I knew him.
From the mines.
It was him.

"You?" We said at the same time, shock apparent in our voices. Something flashed in his eyes, and the male backed up the stairs, his cold gaze never leaving me. I shuddered, the fur on my spine raised as high as it could get. I turned to the female at the counter, guilt hitting me in waves as I spotted the scar across her left cheek. "And you...?"

She nodded. I gulped and stepped back. My stomach twisted. I turned and left the shop.

I didn't want to reopen old wounds.

->> "Oh wow..."

Three more notes, please and thank you.

->> "What the?! Are you kidding?!!"

Nope.

->> "Fine, whatever. Take them, you scoundrel."

Pleasure doing business with you.
