MEMOIR OF A PEACEMAKER
[ 1004 words total ]

||||When I was a child, I was told that one day I would do amazing things. I would travel the univer
se on a mission to make peace - with all the skill and grace as my father before me. They called me
peacemaker before I had even left my own village - a traveler of the stars who couldn't step foot in t
o the forest for their own fear that I might not come out alive. After resting so much faith in me for
years, finally the time had come for me to live up to this title I'd earned through no effort of my own
Finally, I felt I could prove myself, that I could become the peacemaker they had all hoped I would b
e! But alas, I was not to explore the galaxies far beyond my own yet. I was still far too young, too fra
gile to even explore the gentle woods which sat next to my small village.||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||But that would not stop me. While my tutor, Na'hiid, taught me about caution and negotiation, I
taught myself about the wildlife on my own planet. I was fascinated by the strange creatures that liv
ed in the Loridian forests, flora and fauna alike. It was then that I began writing journal upon journal
about everything I found, observing my surroundings in a never-ending quest to learn more. I found t
hat Glassroot flowers bloomed during the start of the harmony cycle, when the weather was warm an
d the world was at it's peak, while the Percipia bloomed at the start of the dissonance cycle where th
e opposite was true. Hurrimand Beetles, while they could grow to the enormous sizes of 60 vasts, we
re absolutely harmless. They could suck the sap out of Jungla trees without damaging the bark and st
ill leave the tree enough nutrients to continue producing it.||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||I was utterly fascinated by the forests and, while Na'hiid bored me endlessly with her lessons on
peacemaking protocol, I had always been excited to finally start on my mission, though now I cared l
ess about becoming an even greater peacemaker than my father and much more about learning of th
e strange flora and fauna I could find on different planets! Though my mission of peace was laid out
before me, my true mission became my passion to learn of the life I would encounter on these strang
e new worlds. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||Finally came the day that I would set out on my first peacemaking mission. I learned that day of
where I would be headed - a larger planet than our own, identified in the Feros Galaxy as Gaia, or Ea
rth
. Peacemakers such as myself had tried many, many years ago to make peace with this planet's in
habitants, but our attempts were unsuccessful as any beings we had found at the time had been hosti
le and unable to understand our mission there. Our information of the planet that we had long forgot
ten, Gaia from our sister galaxy, had resurfaced once again - and our plans had now been set into mo
tion. No longer was I too young or too untrained to head out on a dangerous mission such as this, whi
ch meant that now we could once again make contact with this strange world and find out if, despite
what had happened all those years ago, we could make peace with it's inhabitants.||||||||||||||||
||||I was ecstatic! Finally I would be stepping out of the protective custody I had endured as a child -
finally it was my time to do something.. dangerous! Or so I had thought. But no, I was still far too fra
gile to make this journey on my own. They assigned guards to me, tens of them at the ready, an entir
e ship and crew would fly me out to this new planet and stand by as myself and five guards would tak
e a pod down to the planet to enter a peace-talk with the native beings. Suddenly, it sounded boring.
The guards would be on constant watch, and at long last my chance to do something new and exciting
was utterly crushed. Sure, I would be travelling among the stars, but no longer was this a journey wh
ere I could learn about a new planet, it was one controlled no longer by fate but by the guiding hand
s of my guards.||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||Upon setting forth our plans and heading out on my mission, I already started to absorb the infor
mation I could gain from my surroundings. I learned about the ship's functions, how to repair the engi
nes, what makes a good ship's crew. Even if it was a boring mission now, I wouldn't squander such an
amazing learning experience. Perhaps, one day, I could lead my own crew - what I learned now would
be crucial! Once we had arrived to Gaia's atmosphere, I had become educated in different kinds of fig
hter pilots and their corresponding usefulness in different kinds of war ships from one particularly sea
soned crewman. While it was unlikely, with myself being a peacemaker, that I would ever use the info
rmation, his enthusiasm made the education worthwhile. Perhaps this trip wasn't completely wasted,
after all.|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||Our pod had landed in a forest quite like the one outside my village, though this one was massive
in comparison. I started a journal immediately, taking notes on all the surrounding flora and fauna as
we searched for sentient beings. In my time in that forest, I had started to grow quite attached to thi
s 'earth', which is why, after searching for two days and finding no life here other than the beautiful c
reatures in the forest, I was quite devastated to learn that we would be returning from this mission ea
rlier than planned. I think I'll miss the place once we leave, it really is quite enchanting.. I've lost my j
ournal, though, and even if we leave soon, there is no way I would leave this earth without it. I've alre
ady cataloged so many of the fascinating beasts here, i would never want to leave this knowledge I've
gained behind.||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Prompt Answer:
Somehow, we had become friends.

Every morning since then, when I would leave my cabin to watch the birds stir awake from their restful slumbers, I would see the creature watching me. Looking back at them, body quaking from the force of their gaze, they would pad the few steps it took to stand at my side. After a few moments silently sizing each other up, they would follow me to hide in the brush and observe my avian companions... It was different, but I was happy for the company, sitting together for hours listening to birdsong. I clumsily tried to make conversation once, maybe a week into this routine; the ethereal being at my side simply looked at me, head cocked in questioning silence. They had no way in which to tell me their thoughts, desires, not even their name, but they also didn't seem to have any wish to communicate in such a way; no charades ensued between us. They weren't able to speak, and I was no conversationalist, so we soon became comfortable in each others' silence.

It was on one such morning that I noticed an oddity about my strange new companion - and it was often I discovered new things about them, try as I might to hide my constant, uncomprehending stares - a peculiar function of the glowing sprouts that grew from their back. We had been up before dawn, yet again joined together to observe the avifauna of our boreal home; as we ventured towards a nest of robins that I presumed would be hatching that day, it became increasingly difficult to find my footing. Squinting into the darkness, I could hardly make out the path I'd worn into the ground myself from years of endless trekking, and my voiceless companion was faring no better. I could hear them panting quietly, one of the few sounds that ever escaped them; such an odd occurrence had my head turning of its own accord, but I could hardly make out their figure in the dim light.

So peculiar. I couldn't recall ever having trouble seeing the creature before, even though we were regularly together before the sun would crest the horizon and bring about its boundless source of light and warmth; it dawned on me then that they were hardly letting off a glow, tired eyes peering back at me looking just as uncertain in their gaze. I questioned them, my voice feeling all too loud in the sleepy woods, and they turned their gaze eastward in response, still panting with an exhaustion that was unmerited considering the short amount of time we'd been trekking through the woody underbrush.

Suddenly sunlight filled the sky as dawn crashed over us both, illuminating the leaves, moss, and dew. The familiar rainbow of morning brought vivid hues of green, red, and yellow to light, and in these endless spectra a new one had been added. I had thought by this point nothing could surprise me about the creature, but my jaw laid agape as I watched beams of light divert themselves into the sprouts on their back. The tiny leaves rustled with a wind I couldn't feel, seeming to grow before my eyes for a moment, before the light they had absorbed spread to the rest of their body and illuminated them in the way I'd become so familiar with. I hadn't noticed, but their panting had ceased, though their eyes remained closed in timid reservation - I think they'd been afraid to see my reaction, though that's even to this day only a theory of mine.

I realized something then: I'd never seen them eat anything. Never had they joined me for breakfast or lunch, or stopped to eat a few berries from a passed bush; sunlight - as I'd wondered at then - was their nourishment, and the plants on their back were their only means of consuming it. The ground below them, where glowing paws met dirt, began to look unbearably warm and inviting, and I noticed the plant-like structure in their glistening hind legs seemed to be shifting downwards... into the earth. Before my eyes, particles of soil were toppled by bright green seedlings rising from below. As the sun nourished them, they in turn fed their own life to the forest. I realized I was dealing with something far greater than a vision of bizarre beauty in my lonely, sane world; my heart leaped into my throat as I contemplated the implications of what I'd just seen.

Not only were they a reminder of Earth's boundless offerings, a symbol of growth and prosperity and the promise of spring after winter; not only did they feel a duty to uphold the natural order, or a sympathy for all things that lived and died around them; they were a manifestation of them all. An idol of the world, being cared for as the sun cares for the earth, yet in turn providing for the earth as the sun did. "You're divine," I murmured, body convulsing in reverent shivers when their eyes opened again to lock with mine. I felt I was in the presence of something far greater than myself, and those mornings of normalcy we had spent together flew from my mind.

They began to advance upon me, slowly, and I felt the immense urge to back away, to run and cease my interference with this creature's godly destiny. But paralyzed, I watched as each pawstep spurred new growth to rise from the earth in their wake, enamored and enthralled with each newly birthed bud, until they were nose to nose with me. I felt that warm paw rest on my shoulder, and tears sprung to my eyes; "I shouldn't be interfering, I'm sorry, I..." Shaking their head to silence my thoughts, and smiling as tears tracked a path down my face, I wondered then if I wasn't a welcome distraction to this incredible creature from their inescapable fate.

A distraction or a friend, I was glad either way. (1000/1000)

Prompt Answer:
An exhausted traveller staggers through the forest, they've been drifting for days lost and confused. Breathing out a tired sigh they collapsed giving into their tiredness. But something stopped them, gasping they were shocked to discover they'd collapsed against a stone wall covered in moss and vines. Griping onto the wall they staggered along until they came across a beautiful set of open silver gates, intricate designs of peacocks mirroring each other on the left and right.

Shocked the traveller was greeted with a beautiful garden filled with flora so beautiful and exotic it must of come from all around the world. Their world was filled with colours the traveller couldn't even be sure they'd seen before. Birds fluttered about each breed harmonising perfectly with the other, their song calming the traveller easing their exhaustion. Wandering around the traveller was completely entranced by the stunning plants. Bending down they stopped to smell a cluster of particularly gorgeous soft blue flowers.

The traveller looked up from the plants and gasped in shock once more. Some of the plants were beginning to move, they appeared to be walking away. Stumbling backwards they watched as the plants continued to walk away. They moved in a calm paced fashion, filling the traveller with a similar calm sense as they moved to and fro. Slightly afraid the meandering style of movement entranced the traveller to follow them.
Following the moving plants the traveller paused settling behind a bush as the plants stopped moving. Slightly worried but intrigued the traveller pushed through the bush and walked into a clearing, softly lit by dancing fireflies. In the center sat a beautiful blue Kalon. They looked gentle and had beautiful horns and back legs which looked almost like glass. Across their body the small glowing plants the traveller had been following peaked out of it's fur. Their tail was the most magnificent aspect of them however appearing like that of the peacocks on the gate. In their paws sat a leather bound book, slightly worn and well loved. The Kalon looked up at the traveller and smiled, nodding to beckon them over.

The traveller was hesitant at first but slowly came and settled before the Kalon.
"What... Who are you?" The traveller asked the Kalon.
The kalon paused and closed it's book.
"Artemis" His voice was soft yet masculine. It was oddly pleasing to hear. "I live here" The traveller was about to ask another question but it appeared he had already read their mind. "This garden exists to be a sanctuary for myself and travellers like yourself. Whenever someone enters here I provide them with care and the option to learn about the beauty of this world they otherwise overlook." He looked around at the garden he appeared content. "Everything comes from the earth, I'm lucky enough to share my life force with nature itself but, even if I did not at this point in time, one day I would become one with nature, as all life does. We live on the earth and owe it everything for our lifestyles we currently. People seem to forget about the importance of the earth." Artemis looked at the traveller, his striking eyes shining with his countless knowledge and wisdom.
"Don't you ever hate it?" The traveller asked Artemis.
"I'm content knowing my home is a sanctuary to whoever requires it. I'm at peace knowing my life if the way it is and wouldn't wish it any other way. I simply see it as sharing what inadvertently I would have to return one day in the future. Now dear traveller you must be at peace in your own mind and rest." Artemis turned back to his book opening it to the first page where he began to read aloud. His voice was so calming it lulled the traveller to sleep.

The traveller was awoken by the song of birds they had heard when they entered the garden the previous night. Looking around Artemis was gone, but in his place the book he had been reading sat, a map of the forest sitting on top of it. "Something to help ease your mind and remember, do not take knowledge or nature for granted." The traveller felt more at ease than they ever had in their life time as they exited the garden refreshed and for once, excited for what the world had to offer.

-D.H. Lawence

|| what is her purpose? ||
Sefina was a child when she walked into the dark. She remembers her mother, her people; she remembers the
warmth of sunlight on bare shoulders and heels. But Sefina had always a curious nature, and when the earth
split wide and welcomed her with the heady scent of pomegranate seeds, there was no choice but to go.

When she was young her purpose was simple. She helped her mother with the local crops, the woods, the
wildflowers. She had inherited from Demeter the ability to make things grow, and she doled out her powers to
anyone who asked. The people worshiped them and while Demeter discouraged such things, Sefina loved it.
There was genuine affection in the hands that clasped hers and the thankful tears smeared against her knuckles.
There was power there, purpose. Sefina had been conceived to make things grow.

But the dark had a different quality to it, for there were few green things beneath the dirt; and the shadows
stretched thin and transparent and showed glimpses of the souls that wandered the plains. Sefina found purpose
in this as well. She seized the throne that previously had been held by a worthless god, and she reorganized
hell and all its inhabitants. She found the work soothing and she built into her castle a narrow room, where she
ran her hands along the cracks in the walls and urged flowers to grow.

Sefina stayed beneath for a long time. Inevitably she found herself yearning for things she could not have. The
sun, the trees, the whisper of grass when a breeze carded its fingers through the green. Her determination to
keep her kingdom waned; and one day, quite suddenly, a tunnel appeared within her walls where there had
been nothing before. A haunting light eased from around the corner and Sefina went into the unknown with the
same ferocity she'd had as a child. When she hit the surface the change was jarring, and she nearly turned back
to the familiar. But then, among a copse, Sefina saw a wide-eyed fawn watching her; and she came ghostlike to
the deer's side, touched its flanks, felt its beating heart. For the first time in years, Sefina laughed.

She kept to the trees as she traveled and learned the ways of this new world, and she left in her wake those
flowers she had made in the underworld, those strange dark things with their smoky stems and heavy red petals.
She remembered her friendship with deer and gently cultivated it; and soon enough she was never without
companionship. She found these new humans strange, their towns loud and uncivilized, their hearts and hands greedy.

There was only so long that Sefina could stay complacent in the trees. She was used to being known as a queen--and
soon she wandered into the cities with a curious appetite. She looked similar to these people but there were things
that set her apart; her sweeping tail, her delicate, glass legs. But she was small and looked so terribly fragile that
the people she spoke to treated her carefully, and they told her anything she wanted to know. Sefina found herself
with handfuls of knowledge, of gossip, of secrets. She dealt in these for a while, mostly because doing so amused
her; but Sefina's true purpose did not reveal itself for another decade yet.

She flit between the towns and the wilderness, and she went where she desired, and she plucked secrets from the
fools that offered them. She was in a new place, where the woods were old and the trees whispered to her their
stories, when she discovered that which she had been meant for all along. She went into the city and walked the
narrow streets, and carded through her fingers the mundane shadows of the mortals; and she heard distantly some
shouting, a ruckus of metal, a cruel laugh.

Sefina did not meddle in human affairs. She told secrets because doing so made her laugh; but she did not spare lives,
did not mend relationships. Humans were thick with complications and Sefina didn't care for it, so one cannot say
why she sought the source of the noise that night. Curiosity maybe, for Sefina had always had a curious soul; but
nonetheless, when she happened upon the screaming and saw what was being done, things changed.

It was a woman and a pack of boys, three of them, a fourth farther off playing guard. Sefina stood in the mouth of
the alley and stared for a moment, her bare feet apart, her hands hanging slack at her sides. The woman was
pinned to the wall by a knife held to her throat, and along the curve of her cheekbone glistened blood. They had
already cut her once and clearly their intention was to do so again. Sefina thought of the souls she had tortured
in hell, of the people she had sent to the deepest, darkest places; and she stepped into sight with a slow, toothy smile.

Sefina was not a natural fighter but her mother had insisted she learn to protect herself, and the lessons came to her
in a sweep of muscle memory and adrenaline, and she broke the first boy's leg when he reached for her. She
dispatched the remainder mercilessly, making them scream as they had made the woman, crippling them with broken
bones and torn ligaments. When she was through she went o the girl, who had watched silently; and she helped her
home, and dressed the wound on her face, and put her into bed.

She said from beneath the covers, "Thank you." Sefina stopped. Her blood thrilled with the fight, with vengeance;
but she was reminded suddenly of being worshiped, by the way this stranger looked at her, by how gentle she was
when she took Sefina's hands.

Sefina smiled. She had always been keen on revenge. "Sleep, child," she said, touching the girl's hair. "Things will be
better when you wake."

Miryiam's Purpose : Seed of Life

Keeping a secret oasis isn't always easy. Neither is it easy to please your predecessor. As a kit, she learned from above, she hadn't taken a physical form yet, because she we still learning. Miryiam was watching over the creatures of the Earth, examining them, and studying them. She found much interest in these creatures, because where she first dwelled, there was only 'angelic creatures'. They were like robots, not very much emotion, but would argue if things weren't in their best interests. Little did these angelic creatures take notice of the massacre taking place on Earth.

Down below, on the oasis, that once spread the globe, began shrinking, and shrinking. These creatures, fled for their lives, from the changing world. Hunted and displayed, the 'Blue creatures' quickly began to disappear. And these creatures had no idea where to go. Completely lost, they followed each other, looking for comfort and protection. With nothing left, most of them went to extremes, some climbing mountains, living in the hottest desserts, anything to get away from 'them'. The animals wept, and cried, but no answer came to them. For a long time, the creatures were forced into environments, that most of them couldn't survive in. Very little remained. But that's when one of the 'angelic creatures' noticed...

It wasn't Miryiam, but it was her Predecessor. Her eyes gazed over the destruction of her creation. And for the first time, she wept. Miryiam noticed the great distress her master was in, and she asked why. She pointed to them, suffering running for their lives, and she could do nothing at all. Miryiam was amazed, for her master had great love for them. Out of love, Miryiam asked that she send her away, and put her into a 'fleshly form' so that she may save of what was left of the dying out creatures. At first, her Predecessor resisted, she didn't want to loose Miryiam, her only daughter, to the slaughter that was taking place on the Earth. But, she eventually became too depressed, and she accepted her daughter's offer. Many of the 'angelic creatures' thought Miryiam was insane, stupid, and unbelievable. But with Miryiam's up most love, her mother changed her daughter's form...

A light fell from the sky, it's power carved a home for the creatures. The Blue creatures saw the light, even from far away. But, it was a light that only the animals could see. The blue creatures who saw the light, migrated toward it. Hope was their only thought, they finally were being saved. They climed the mountain, but most of them couldn't climb to the top. The elevation at Mt. Everest, is extremely high. If the animals spent too long up there, their lungs would collapse, and they would die. After a little time, the light came down at the base of the mountain. The animals gathered around to see what would save them. It was a seed. A small glowing seed, that had thoughts and a mind. Telepathically, it spoke to the animals, and asked that they would eat the grass nearby. Many of the animals were afraid, the grass isn't suppose to be glowing, let alone moving on it's own...

As the animals ate the grass, leaves sprouted from their backs. The bigger the animal, the more leaves and sprouts it would have. This was their ticket up the mountain. The plants that grew within their bodies, put their roots into their heart, lungs, and other vital organs. The plants will give the animals beyond ordinary strength, to breathe at the highest altitude on the planet. The plants would also provide the oxygen needed for them.

Before the animals made their journey to the top of the mountain, the seed spoke to them... "Please, bring me with you, and place me in the center of the Eden." So they did. They trekked the mountain, taking turns carrying the seed. And finally, they reached the top, and entered the tunnels made within the mountain...

A vast blue forest awaited them. It sparked with Sun stone drops, and small waterfalls, emerging from the rocks. The creatures gathered in the middle of their new home, and placed the seed on the soft grass. "Thank you." it responded, and began to grow... Miryiam was the seed, and her mother, gave her the power necessary, to create this oasis for her subjects. Myriam could choose any creature she wanted to take form as, for she would become the guardian of this paradise. The giant golden flower grew more and more, but it stayed shut. Within, a small child, was growing. The animals waited I anticipation for their guardian to hatch from the flower.

The sun peaked through the top of the mountain, and glistened on the flower's petals. Soon the whole flower was engulfed within the sun's rays. Finally, the flower began to bloom. It's petals split apart, and expanding, to reveal their future savoir. A kalon, emerged from the flower like cocoon, and placed herself onto the soft, wispy grass. The animals bowed their heads, as Miryiam looked at her new form. It was much more colorful and beautiful than her 'angelic form'. Immediately, she ate the grass, and the plants grew within her, and bloomed from her back.

As time went on, things became more challenging. The plants give, but they also need. Wearing Sun Drop stones, provided the necessary energy for the plants to grow, and provide for the host. Eating the same plants from the same general location, also brings another responsibility to Miryiam's promise to her mother. Everything was connected. Thoughts, emotions, were all things that Miryiam had to endure for the animals. She took the memories of the terrible experiences that they had gone through, and locked them up within herself, so that they no longer had to suffer from the pain that once taunted them for so long. Miryiam was well aware what she had to go through, but her mother's joy was her reward.

xxxxx adeleine could never understand. still cannot understand. why does she have to suffer like this? why couldn't it have been someone else - anyone else? why had mother set this weight on her frail shoulders? she would have been happy to live on her island until her organs failed her and her corpse melted away into the sand until there was nothing left of her. she would have never been anything, would not have mattered in the slightest to anyone, but she would have been happy. complacent. but mother had different plans. had burned everything adeleine ever loved to the ground. her cunning had permitted her escape, had kept her alive. mother did not approve. and now she was doing everything in her power to kill the one who had escaped.
xxxxx nature was adeleine's mother. adeleine was mother's child. but mother did not pick favourites, and did not tolerate disobedience. and now she was out for blood.
xxxxx and adeleine knew all at once. as those stormy seas lapped viciously at the sides of her boat and the wood beneath her groaned in exhaustion, she felt a chill run up her spine, her fur bristling fearfully. her purpose was to serve nature. and mother wanted her to die.
xxxxx but she would not give up like this. she would be the rebellious child, the survivor. she would not let her wicked mother control her existence any more. the plants growing in and around her could weaken her with all of their best efforts, but she would never fall. every rocky shore, every saw-toothed shark would only make her stronger. and just as all of mother's efforts to supply her life would cause her end, the same mother's attempts to kill her would breathe life into her lungs.
xxxxx she was like the light on the end of the angler. and although her shine and comforting glow would draw many others to their untimely deaths, she herself would never fall victim to the jaws that waited just beyond her in the darkness. even if, one day, the fish chose to devour his own light, then he would surely perish himself. no creature would trust his lingering form in the dismal abyss, and he would be alone.
xxxxx death was the price she had to pay for life. but she was not yet done living.

xxxxx mother would have to wait with jaws unhinged.

Postby Karmel » Fri Aug 11, 2017 2:31 pm

SECOND CUTS: ROUND TWO RESULTS
Again apologize for the delay, there's been a lot more going on that I was prepared for and I am sorry that has affected the schedule I set forth. I also received some help from the lovely Wicced!Witch to determine those who proceed as I was quite pressed for time. I want to say again, this has been an incredibly difficult decision as everyone truly is so creative and inspiring with their answers. I appreciate everyone who participated and let me read their beautiful forms.

Congratulations

    [ backstory and destiny:

I have to ask, how? How could this all happen?

Her eyes close and the forest grows cold. A soft breeze rattles through the trees and suddenly, I am overwhelmed by a sense of awe. When I open my eyes, I see that hers are already open.

    She’s ready to tell me.

She says the nations were at war for the longest time. Centuries. Blood spilled and empires fell. It was, as if, the mountains and the valleys were no longer in tact. No longer symbiotic. The war lasted for so long, many had forgotten their roots or their families. Nature had almost completely vanished; there wasn’t a single garden left for sewing.

That was when, onto a single righteous sprout, an olive sapling, a crying Mother Nature weeped. She cried, not only for the loss of earth, but the loss of humanity. The loss of morals. How savage and morbid the war had treated her. And when she had finished crying, the tree grew tall and extended a branch like an arm, delivering to Mother Nature a mustard seed of a child.

She is the child, a successor, and a noble plant indeed. For every act of good she does, she is sewn with a new sapling. Young, indeed, but still so ripe. The deeds she must perform in order to raise India back into it’s grandiose era are vigorous. Raising saplings of people, mending the wilted sick, and tending to the uprooted to bring them home again. While Mother Nature refurbishes the forests the war had lost, Arisha, in all her glory and magnificence, brings the humanity back to the unholy.

So why, then, are things so hard? I can’t help but ask. Your job has been done. Why are you so afraid to be queen some day?

The air growths thick with complications. She tells me “it’s far more elaborate than that”. She says that being a queen has less to do with the plans for the future, and more to do with your destiny. “Not that I do not believe in free will,” she says, this time with genuine modesty on her face, “but because our lives do reach a certain point eventually. We were made to do something.”

I watch her eyes travel to the sinking sun above. Then, the forest grows quiet. Silent, even. The only thing left is the sound of my breathing; the princess was so quiet, I can hardly tell she’s breathing at all. When she opens her eyes, they’re glazed like glass. My heart, all at once, seems to shatter. There’s pain in there.

Image

With one shaking breath, she tells me “I’m weak”. Those two words, and yet, with a million words inside. I want to reach out and kiss her forehead; I want her to know she is the ruler of a thousand people. She is the home of many, and a sovereign ruler. But I cannot. I can’t bring myself to do it. So I sit quietly and I listen.

“I’m too weak to grace my people with the ideals of a queen. My mind is too rambunctious and my feet do not travel in the ways a ruler’s might. My heart, too restless, my soul, too eager. I am unsatisfied.”

That’s it. She’s finally said it.

Suddenly, her eyes lighten and she stands up. The stars unfold in the sky like cascading pearls from a broken necklace. They seem to twinkle, for just her. She smiles, softly, and looks at me as if the world were a puzzle and she has placed the final piece.

“A queen that recognizes and appreciates her faults thrives greener than the thickest forest.” And with that, a single daffodil, right between her shoulders, emerges as a sapling. I stare at her in amazement. She gives me a single, delicate smile.

“What does a daffodil symbolize?” I ask. There is a quiet moment, and it seems as if the earth had ceased to spin.

    “New beginnings.”
