Folke always wanted to be a mage. Always wanted to impress his friends, be something great and powerful. From an early age, it became his dream. His first love of this came up when seeing a mage performing at a fair, watching the wonderful magics they performed, hearing stories of how powerful sorcerers fought alongside armies and defended their homelands. What no one told Folke... was that he had no magical power. He had no chance. The world was not perfect, there was no amount of wishing or trying hard that would make him have magic he
just didnt possess.
He worked hard, got accepted into the Mage's Hold of Ipus, Studied the books for hours, days, weeks. Poured his everything...
just for his mentors to discover he lacked any magical prowess or possibility. He would never have a chance of achieving the dream that haunted him day after day and sulked in his every thought since childhood. Shamefully rejected from the school he was given a job cleaning up after the other mages. A magical janitor? That was absolutely unacceptable for Folke. But he allowed it.
Why? Because he had big plans. He might not be able to use magic...but he could find power in other ways. Utilizing and abusing the magic of others he'd teach them a lesson for spurning him when he gave them his all...

Folke is, on the surface friendly and charismatic. He's a dreamer, always has been, with a lot of investment in things he chooses to do. if he's going to do it, he's going to do his best and anything less than perfect isn't worth his time. Needless to say, wasting his life on a dream he couldn't possibly achieve because no one told him otherwise has left him rather bitter and jaded towards the world around him.
Despite his inner frustration, he's still good at wearing the mask of someone who hasn't been hurt in such a way. He behaves the way he always did, but now as a force of habit rather than his true nature. He struggles with a deep depression in feeling all his goals torn from him when he felt they were so close he could nearly grab them.
He isn't necessarily malicious or violent, or aggressive- and he doesn't really blame anyone for what happened to him further than a blame towards his friends for not breaking the truth to him sooner. But it has conditioned him to be exceptionally self-condemning and harsh on his own failures. If he fails at something, he'll tear himself down over it.
His desire for power always started with his youth, the story of his parents being 'normal' and in his view- boring. He loves his family, and his parents of course, but working at a bakery was just never his place. He strove for greatness, to be a hero like the ones he always read and saw movies about. That was the life he wanted. Not just for his own benefit- but because he fell into a delusion that the only way he could help people was by doing such drastic things. Baking bread wasn't helping anyone, it wasn't doing some good in the world. Sure- his parents and friends could try to convince him otherwise but it just made no difference. He wanted to be powerful, and have an ability to change the world around him.
He doesn't like others looking down on him, and can't stand to be pitied for his situation. He's convinced he just has to work harder to rectify it.
As he falls further into depression and delusion, he finds solace and peace as his mind slowly works to understand the reality of his situation and adapt to the change presented in his life and in his goals. He starts to understand that magic- is not just a matter of power, but magic is what you make of it. Magic can be found in the most mysterious of places.
As he grows older, as he adapts, he slowly understands more and more about the world around him and tries to open his eyes to new things that are wondrous and strange. Its a long road to what he deems a recovery from his failure, but one he's taking step by step into the future.
