snow flurried against the windows, the moon
illuminating the flakes brightly against the night.
sirius was underneath a pillow fort that he'd
built earlier while he was waiting for his hot
chocolate to warm up on the stove. the warm
beverage had long since melted the marshmallows
that has been floating on top of the liquid.
sirius's feet were squished comfortably under
his dog, akira's, belly, her snores soft and calming
against the silence of the snowstorm. sirius
had a pair of headphones jammed in his ears,
classical music blasting through the speakers.
he hummed along to the sound of a violin as he
turned the page of a riveting mystery novel,
his eyes skipping across the page rapidly as
the antagonist killed another. suddenly, there
was a loud thumping against sirius's door, akira
leaping up from her position on the floor to
woof threateningly at the approacher. heart
hammering in his chest, sirius approached the
front door slowly, tugging his headphones out of
his ears, his socks silent on the wooden floors.
"who is it?" he called out as he reached the entryway.
the door was flung open, sending a flurry of snow into
the house. "right, then, forgotten our movie night
again, have ya?" sirius's best friend and blizzard
partner, james, shuffled inside, dropping a stack
of dvd's on the counter. "reading that book again?
what's that, fourth, fifth time yet?"

james was grinning as he teased sirius, helping
himself to hot chocolate. "sixth, actually."
sirius corrected idly, his smile brighter than
the snow outside. they'd made it a tradition,
long ago, when they were kids - every time
there was a snowstorm, james would pop over
with a couple of movies and they'd binge-watch
them until it was safe to go outside once more.
still cupping his hands around his hot chocolate,
james yanked a bag of popcorn from the bag he'd
brought it, triumphantly showing it to sirius. "i
brought sustenance." along with the soft popping
of the popcorn and the faint classical music still
playing from sirius's headphones, he was not longer
scared by the possibility of a masked murderer
being at his door - instead, he was full of
contentment, joy to be with his friend once more.
