Prompt 12
Arnav || T.C. Salem||
Amosis ||

Salem reflected wryly on their journey so far. The path through Lavalands was definitely a ride-- flaming chickens, more shadow monsters, and even more dangerous creatures only native to this firey wasteland. Raffi was something else, too. Salem was especially thankful to be able to get Sawyer back on his feet, though.

Thankfully Salem, Arnav, and Amosis made their way through the lands relatively unscathed. Amosis though... he seemed to be left with a broken heart. Salem still snickers under his breath when he thinks about it.

But, their job wasn't over yet in the fiery region-- they still had to get their hands on Lavaland's crystal. And it was in the very center of the caverns.

Unlike the last two easy finds with the crystal, this fiery stone was guarded... by a hoard of angry, on fire chickens. And some type of chicken... dragon monstrosity. Stars that thing was ugly. But no less fierce.

The rambunctious party nearly got their fur singed off trying to get to the crystal-- their only saving grace was Amosis' near unmatched speed (especially when a literal match was lit under him) that swiped the crystal and had the three hightailing it out of danger. Definitely not doing that again.

But, their job was done-- and despite Salem's earlier guesses, the energy emanating from the crystal was... just warm. Like a burning hearth, the stone's energy was steady, yet powerful like a contained fire.

    Who knows what awaits them next. {246}

Choking, coughing, and holding their paws over their mouths, Furin and Nameless trudged through the thick black smoke of the volcanic cave.

They had heard from locals that supposedly, there was some great treasure at the bottom of this cave. If it was the crystal or not, they didn't know. But the two sure could try. And try they were. Nameless pondered about halfway in if they possibly should have seen if that salesman guy was selling any gas masks. Or... "magical breathing rings" or whatever he would call them.

However, he didn't have to think long. Squinting through the acrid smoke, he managed to make out a pedestal- the third altar, just like the other two. Holding his breath, he rushed towards it, quickly relieving the crystal of its position on top of the stone fixture.

When he did, the thick smoke rapidly became even thicker, so much he could hardly see. It burned every part of his face- and Furin's too. He could hear the adolescent Kalon hacking away, unsure if he should cover his eyes or his mouth.

"Just run back the-" Nameless's words were interrupted by rough, weak coughing, as the smoke filled his lungs. "way we... came! Fast!"

This was all the encouragement Furin needed, his paws finding the ground quickly as he galloped out. Nameless was close behind the whole way. Though even as they burst out of the cave, the dark smoke seemed to cling to them like a stench. It, too, must have been some evil hex by the darkness that was guarding the crystal.

"...We... need a bath..." Nameless wheezed at last, finally able to slip the third gem into the pocket of his coat.

"Uh-oh. Looks like that wasn't a real tresure chest. It was a mimic. Those pesky beast are always luring adventurers in!
How is your hero going to deal with this one..."

Artemis -- Electra -- Ronan

Prompt 12

Seems like there's a lot of things out to get them, but your hero is pretty tough! Tough enough to find and restore the Lavalands' crystal?
Tell me how they do it!
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The trio of sweating kalons, with dirt-clogged fur and scorched, aching pawpads, approached the suspected position of the crystal. "Meditation showed me that it should be around here!" Artemis commented, leading the party along the cracked, baked path. A faint, warm illumination danced on the cave walls in the distant mirage, caused by the intense heatwaves. "I think I can see it!" Electra announced, putting a paw forward to point towards the light in the distance. The three kalons approached the radiating ember crystal cautiously. Artemis gentle prodded it's radiant, coral surface tentatively, to see if the aura was that of a potentially dangerous one. No. Everything was safe. Upon inspection, Artemis then picked up the fragile crystal and cradled it in his arms gently, making sure not to drop it, otherwise their hopes would be literally shattered into a thousand dusty fragments. The radiant crystal was passed around all the kalons, each inspected it closely and held it securely. "The fate of Kalokairi rests on this crystal and the other three," Ronan commented, gazing upon the beautiful crystal and acknowledging it's deeper purpose. "We need to navigate to the entrance of the caves, in order to find the exit," Electra asserted. "But first, we need to find the pedestal," she continued, gesturing towards the archway of the cave, where pale starlight filtered through.

---

Heading in a straight path southwards and following the path indicated on the map, the three eventually reached the mouth of the cave entrance to the pedestal room. The walls sparkled and mirrored images of the room in their clear, smooth, spotless surface. It's tranquility was soothing and the beauty was truly brilliant and captivating. Minor holes and cracks in the roof of the cave allowed weak light to filter through, illuminating the surroundings below. Artemis carried the radiating crystal, clean-cut and smooth-surfaced and placed it on the central podium made from some form of granite. Moments after the fiery crystal was placed on the smooth surface, it sank into place and a 'clicking' sound followed afterwards. A tremor ran through the solid earth, sending the cave walls shaking and the rocks on the ground to rattle. After a brief moment of movement, silence fell upon the cave and the surroundings in lavalands. "Did it work?" Ronan asked, glancing at the faint light entering the cracks in the ceiling of the cave. "Only one way to find out," Electra mumbled, leading the party outside the cave and along the exit path. "We need to get out of these caves," Electra said, leading the party towards the exit of the maze of caves.

      prompt 11 | 1,057 words | roster post | palmer, venita, & rudy

the party had been searching the lavalands for days, but there was still no signs of the fire crystal in sight. palmer was growing impatient- he could handle the heat, but that didn't mean he liked it. plus, rudy and venita's whining was getting on his nerves, and he could tell that they were beginning to grow suspicious of him.
"why don't we just head down to crystal cove?" ven asked as they walked along, careful of the lava near them. "we've already passed by the entrance... wouldn't it make sense for us to just press onward?" she frowned, grabbing his wrist. "or... is there something you'd like to tell us?"
palmer gulped. "no, we're just spending a bit more time here! it's important to scout the area to make sure there's nobody else who needs our help."
"but you don't even like helping people," complained rudy, trudging along behind them. "mari wouldn't last much longer. he needs a cooler environment, dude. let's just go."
he was running of out excuses. "just give me one more day, and we're outta here. i promise- i need one more day. just one, okay?" the other two kalons hesitated, but agreed. crap. palmer only had a day left to find the crystal? he was screwed.
or so he thought. the familiar altar-like structure made him sigh of relief. he darted toward the small, red box that sat atop the main pedestal, praying that a monster would show its presence.
and thankfully for palmer, it did. the creature rose from the gigantic pool of lava that sat only feet away from the party, letting out a terrifying screech. palmer slammed his hands down on the box before it could fly away though, and shoved it into his bag.
venita drew her sword, and marigold leapt out of rudy's bag. but it wasn't of good use- the monster was made of the familiar darkness, seeping into the environment around it, but it was coated in lava.
the creature opened its mouth, spewing flames toward the party. they darted in different directions, scrambling to get out of its reach.
"palmer," venita yelled from across the now expanded pool of lava, "aren't you a 'highly-skilled mage'?" he took in a breath and nodded. meanwhile, rudy was singing some cheesy '80s pop song. while it was extremely, excruciatingly obnoxious, it did help make the other kalons' hits stronger.
palmer fumbled around in his bag, searching for the small wand of his. it was powerful- but the key to a powerful spell was to have a powerful mind. he'd memorized most of the spells he found important, and figured he'd let one of them rip.
the lava that surrounded the creature rose, sucked up from the ground and the monster itself. it screeched, its means of power being dragged away from it. palmer slowly rose his hands, pulling the lava higher above the ground as he did so.
all venita and rudy could do was stare at each other in shock. palmer was too focused to notice their looks, though, but he mustered out a "stand back."
the other two kalons darted backwards, not wanting to waste time. as if he were playing god, the lava clumped together, forming small lumps- and then, it turned to rock, dropping down on the monster, crushing it with a satisfying thud.
black particles and smoke filled the area. the creature, the 'guardian' of the fire crystal, was defeated. palmer crumpled to the ground. the fight had taken a lot out of him. his companions ran to his side, scrambling to aid him.
"d-dude, oh my god!" rudy yelled, shaking the shorter kalon. palmer let out a small groan. "are you okay? that was sick, but... palmer?"
he opened his eyes, smiling faintly. "i'm good, don't worry. i just didn't expect i'd have to go that far, and... it's been a while." palmer got up slowly, leaning on venita's side.
she put her arm around his shoulder, giving him a pat. god, she was so awkward, even in situations like this. "now, i don't mean to ruin the moment, but i saw you sneak that chest into your bag. now let's see..."
it was no use for him to fight venita. he'd just have to explain himself- he didn't know how, but it was time for his two companions to know the truth about their quest. venita fumbled in his bag until she gently pulled the box out.
as she opened it, she gasped. "wh-what... what is this?" she held the fire crystal up, her eyes sparkling as the crystal caught the light. it was beautiful, but not quite pretty enough to rid palmer of the sick feeling in his stomach.
"remember the shadow plague i was telling you about? well, it hasn't always been here, and it's worse than you two think. monsters don't regularly roam the streets in this world, and people have been suffering."
rudy shook his head. "th-that... that can't be. why would you want us to come here? why couldn't you have told us about this before?"
palmer ignored his questions, and continued on. "the only way to destroy the plague is to return the four crystals of the elements- fire, water, wind, and earth- to their rightful places. which is what that is. there's a small pouch in my bag- it's yellow. the wind and earth crystals are in there. i didn't want you two to have to know."
venita dug around in his bag, and handed him the pouch, alongside the fire crystal. palmer took the other two out, and laid them in his lap. "this is the way to save the kingdom. i'm not from this world, and neither are you two, but... i've met many people who are dear to me here. i can't just let them perish."
"and you two would've never joined me if i'd explained this earlier. it's far too crazy, and the amount of suffering these people have endured would've broken your little hearts. but... now you two know, huh?"
palmer sighed. venita held her hand out to him as he put the crystals back into his pouch. "well, palmer. i don't appreciate your deceit, but i know one thing for certain. we're going to find the water crystal, and we're going to find it together."

    prompt twelve
kalon used: althea, peregrine, & james

The party of three had made a makeshift camp far away from the rumbling of the active volcanoes, but not far away enough to escape the heat. It was so much so that James couldn't really get to sleep, and he found himself wide awake while the other two were sleeping soundly, given the conditions they were in. James curled up on a pillow, trying to sleep once more. After all, he would need to conserve his energy. But, wait, this wasn't his pillow-

    "Cheep!"

"Augh!" James cried out, now noticing he had been too groggy to see that he had laid his head on the back of a fire chicken instead of the pillow beside him. The chicken didn't seem to mind, anyway. As a matter of fact, it seemed to be trying to get James's attention. But the events that followed weren't a very productive way to do it, because just then, the chicken took James's canteen in it's beak, and bolted down the crackling earth.

"Hey! You, you-" James huffed before running after the chicken. He needed the canteen; after all, he couldn't go without it down in the heat here. He just wished he could leave this place, but he knew it was for the greater good. But did he really need this chicken to bother him? This late at night? Well, to be fair, he couldn't even tell if it was night, due to all the ash in the air.

The chicken continued up several uphill slopes, and James had really considered to give in and head back to his camp with the others, before the chicken stopped. It plopped down, the strap of the canteen still in it's beak. It was on its nest, sitting very comfortably. It gave off a warm glow, the chicken, presumably from the fire.

"Thank you, Mr. Chicken," James growled bitterly, snatching the canteen from it. That was before the chicken moved, and it was revealed the glow wasn't coming from the flames of the chicken, but ... was it really?

"The crystal?" James asked with wonder in his tone. It's like the chicken knew that he needed to find it. It looked at James with a silly experession, and even though he was exasperated, he couldn't help but laugh, and give the soft chicken a hug. He could finally sleep easy.

with ginko ─ the monk & odo ─ the warlock

    Imageglints & glimmers: [ 590 ]
ginko had found odo after a long search that dealt with a fire spitting chicken and nearly melting his khakkhara. but as the two tired travelers walked they realized they had entered a large cavern at the very edge of the lava lands. it seemed to have eaten them whole and swept away the land behind them because as they turned around they noticed that they could no longer even tell where they had entered. all that mattered to ginko was that is was cooler than the lava land and he didn't have to use his protective spell though the ice stone he had found kept freezing his hip a bit which gave him trouble off and on. [ the stone is making it hard for you to move, what should you do? ]

✧ enchant the stone so it isn't so cold.
✧ bury the stone deeper into your bag.
✦ give the stone to odo.

odo had been watching ginko closely and as ginko was trying to figure out what to do to change the freezing cold biting at his hip odo asked, "what's the matter?" ginko turned towards his partner and grunt softly. "there's an enchanted stone in my satchel that freezes anything it touches for an extended period of time.. it's currently freezing my hip." he clenched his teeth as he continued to walk. odo help out his hand, "give it to me so you don't die of hypothermia." he grunted and ginko gave him the stone rather quickly. odo placed it in the box on his back with no questions asked. then they continued on ward, though something in the distance caught their eyes. it was a sea of gems and crystals as far as the eye could see, surrounding a rather large glowing pool of some sort. they both began to walk faster, they reached the first few crystals and stared at them in awe of their radiant beauty. ginko felt waves of calm coming from the crystals and it made him smile widely. he glanced at odo, the warlock seemed to be feeling the same though his eyes were filled with childlike wonder. ginko tapped odo on the shoulder and nodded towards the glowing pool. they both slowly walk over to it. ginko looks at odo and smiles before setting himself down. they were both tired from the long trek here and they were glad to get to sit and rest. after they had set everything down ginko and odo both looked at the water beside their camp. ginko watched as odo leaned over, the older male slowly put his hand out. [ it looks like odo is going to touch the water, warn him or do the same? ]

✦ do the same, it's just too beautiful to not touch.
✧ warn him, who knows what the water will do to him!

ginko bit his cheek and put his hand out as well, he was about to touch the water when odo jerked him back. "what are you doing?! you do know what that water does!" he said in a slightly angered tone, ginko panted and looked at him seeing his face soften a little like a father who just yelled at their small toddler. "just be careful and don't touch it till we test it.. for now let's just get some rest." he spoke softly the scooted over to his tent to lay down. ginko nodded a little and did the same.
