you were like the night's moon
mysterious as silver rays
punctuating my atmosphere
indecisive as the many faces of the moon
morphing when i slept
and i was like the day's sun
bright, brilliant and
a burning mass of flame
and solar flares,
with atomic bomb might
but we could never quite
touch
but we lived for each other,
shuddered in the same choking breath
and i thought


maybe,
maybe,
we could hold each other close
that my gold would warm your silver
that your coolness would calm my
might
but instead, when we collided,
we brought about each other's end
i shoved into your night with light
and blinded owls, erased stars
you crashed into my day with dark
and no longer could anyone see
you folded me into a sunset
and you slid into a sunrise
but those in-betweens are not possible
without the moon.

There's always a calm before the storm.
A time when the clouds roll in
And the air stands deathly still
Just before the skies go truly dark
And the heavens unleash their fury.

The same is true for people.
There is a time before the pain really hits you
But then it slips out:
One
Single
Tear
And suddenly it's a downpour
Of rain and wind and thunder and lightning
Crying and sobbing and shaking
And you can't stop it
Because you can't stop a storm once it's begun.
You have to see it to the end
Screaming and howling and moaning
Until the last drop falls
And the wind finally settles into a calm.

Many do not see the beauty in a storm
The dance of the lightning,
The song of the rain and wind,
The drumbeats of thunder
Inner storms are even more unappreciated
Because the beauty lies inside rather than out
For just like the rains cleanse the earth
An inner storm rids you of the pain
As the shaking resides
And the tear stains dry
There is a moment where you are still.
Not every storm ends in a rainbow
But each comes with healing within.

When Hale is a child
his mother tells him she'll be back.
She gets in the car,
goes to the airport;
he doesn't see her again until the funeral
restored and pale and sleeping in a narrow box.

He never forgets her.
He is traded through foster homes,
distant relatives, aunts, uncles, cousins.
He comes and goes.
No one complains about him.
They say
"He's too quiet"
or
"He's very serious"
or
"I think he's still sad."

Hale doesn't correct them.
He thinks it's ridiculous that they believe
he shouldn't be sad
two years after the fact,
six years.
She was his mother;
it was an accident that killed her
but she died nonetheless.

He finds little ways to remember her.
He sits on the highest slopes,
on the roofs of buildings,
between the crooked branches of crooked trees;
and he watches the sunrise.
She had always loved it,
urging him from bed in the dark,
bustling him to their patio sheathed in a blanket.
They'd sit curled together on the swing and watch the sky bleed colors.
She'd try to describe them for him,
as Hale has been colorblind since birth,
and he was always enamored with her poetry.

there is a sadness,
it swells like an oceans tides,
it is the dim light
where waves crash
and children scream in glee.

there is a sadness
where grass grows,
where wheat is sown,
and farmers pluck flowers for their daughters.

in poetry there is sadness.
it stands that it can't be
expressed the way it should.
words are beautiful, kindred.

even the greatest poets
can't combat the degrees of separation.

i lie awake at night,
thinking about you,
thinking about how many times you rejected me,
and just for me to come right back to you.

i don't know why i ever thought it was a good idea.
i don't know why dreaming of us being together would be a good idea.

i'm not perfect, so why would we be a perfect match?
they say opposites attract, but that's never true, is it?
we look for people that have similar interests as us so we can get along easier,
then when we are let down about not having anything alike with whomever we like.

we consider ourselves ugly, imperfect, stupid,
the list goes on.
just because the one you 'love'..
doesn't love you back.

we lie awake at night,
thinking about them,
crying, knowing that they'll never want you as much as you want them,
yet we always go back to them, the ones we love,
even though we know they don't like us back whatsoever,
maybe we just enjoy the pain.
maybe we enjoy the sadness.
who knows.

all i know is that i love you,
but you don't love me back,
and for once? that's alright.
i guess.
