Solis was a normal kalon at first. They never experienced anything more exciting than an average kalon would, until one day. Their mother pulled them aside and told them a story.
"Solis, you aren't a normal kalon. You havent experienced it yet, thank goodness, but you will soon. Before you were born, I was the assistant to a powerful sorcerer. I ran errands for him, let him practice spells on me, whatever he needed me to do, I would do it. But one day, I did something that angered him greatly, causing him to lash out in anger, knocking me to the floor. He said, 'Your child will never be like us! He will be cursed for eternity!'. This frightened me, so I ran away from him, and I never looked back. He was more powerful than you would ever imagine, so I am sure his curse still holds." Solis began to feel dizzy. "Solis, are you okay?"
They fell over, the room spinning around their head. They looked at their paws. They were turning black. "Mama?!" they called out in fear. "Mama!"
Before their mother's eyes, the sun setting behind them, Solis transformed into a completely new form.
"Whoa.. Mama?"
"Solis? Is it still you?"
"I think so... What happened to me?"
"It's the curse. I'll kill that sorcerer if I ever see him again."
"Do I look weird?" They inspected their tail. Their shine had changed from the sun to a moon.
"No, my child. Just... different."

As the days went by, Solis was stuck as their new self. While Solis had previously loved the sunlight, they now preferred to bask in the light of the moon. They started to prefer staying up all night and napping during the day.

Name: Illyris Eosin (Eosin is a word part that means Dawn)

Magical abilities: 1. Illyris is able to create stars and release them into the sky in his night form. The only way he can do this is by taking the purest light he has access to, the last light from a kalon’s eyes after they have passed away, and wills it to grow. To produce a star, he has to pull a fraction of the light produced by his horn to his hands, focus his energy and combine it with the tiny light from the ritual. From there he manipulates it, giving shape, color, and intensity, increasing it until it can grow on its own in the night sky once it is released. These blooming stars drift gently out of his fingertips towards the dark sky, and once it has gained height, the other kalons present release paper lanterns to accompany the believed spirit on its final journey.
2. During both the night and day he is able to create and manipulate light, to dim or increase where it already exists or to form it in his hands. He can take the light produced from the match and increase it to illuminate the room, long after the match has burned out. It takes little concentration to dim lights, but to increase them it takes more energy.


Transformation…
The shedding of the dark and into the light is almost like the fur is absorbing the light, forcing out the dark and shedding it away. It is painless and beautiful to watch, the light taking over the dark, starting from the toes. It spreads up his body, gold light changing the dark fur to the light in a shimmering line, raising up like the sun rising in the east. This happens each day at daybreak. Travelling upwards, once it reached the pinnacle, the point of his horn it illuminates in a diamond-like shine, a flash that completes the transition. He breathes a contented sigh, pulling his hair back for the day ahead and spreading his gold-tipped wings.
The transition from light to dark is very different. At sunfall every day, the golden kalon almost shudders as a shock passes through him. While not painful, Illyris compares it to being filled with the coursing emotions of his people, positive and negative, and it prepares him for the difficult task of funeral rites throughout the kingdom. As the intense emotion passes through him and his wings arch as if he’s about to take flight, the feathers in his wings begin turning over with a white light. The feather-like lights spread out from the wings across his body until the lights begin to fade and reveal the soothingly dark fur. In this form, he feels responsible for so many of the lives and emotions of the kalons in his kingdom, almost as if their emotions are intensified.

Illyris considers this transformation a great honor that’s been bestowed on. It is rumored that when the former priest of light passes, the power is passed on to a gifted individual with a pure heart. The kalon that is selected must have experienced a form of loss in their life, have a great deal of empathy, and to have a pure soul. The blessing passed on to Illyris after the last light-keeper passed quietly, surrounded by dear friends, his eyes wide and staring at the stars.
-A light keeper’s first ritual is the one they perform on the previous light keeper the following night. The deceased is placed honorably within the temple with the staff that has been passed down from keeper to keeper.
-Releases the soul of the former keeper within an hour of their first transition and addresses the people before they are considered the new light keeper
-only the powers and the ability of the transition are passed down to the next light keeper. Their original design is the day form, and they gain the night form when they are blessed with their powers. Has had his wings since birth, and takes great pride in them.
(history)
-Illyris was 17 when he was anointed with the power of the light keeper. He was born with his wings naturally and was a gemcutter previously. Illyris lost his parents at age 12. They both worked in the mines all their lives, believing that hard work with their hands was honorable work. They adored the stars, and while they spent hours and hours laboring away in the mines, always made time for their son. Together the three of them would climb to the roof, lay and point out the stars, naming the keepers of the past and the constellations that were formed. Never one to turn away a hungry kalon, they shared what little they had with those who weren’t as blessed as them. They always wanted a better life for their son though, and scraped pennies together to put him through school. Endlessly proud of him, they never thought that anything would happen to them. When the mines collapsed, it took 2 days to find the pair in the rubble. Illyris attended their funeral and watched as the keeper at the time, Adderon, released their lights into the sky. He never forgot the words that were said to him as he watched their lights dance together up into the sky. Adderon knelt down beside the grieving child, and took his hand. “I know it hurts now, young one. And while the hurt will never disappear, it will fade knowing that their stars watch over everything that you do for the rest of time.”
In the coming years, Illyris threw himself into his studies as if he could prove himself through this. Through everything he did, he kept his family in mind. With everything that happened, he continued to hold up the beliefs he and his parents shared. Everything he had, he shared with those around him. Food, hope, a warm place to spend the night. The kalon rarely went home with change to spare, even after gaining higher-paying job as a gemcutter he worked so hard to be.
The day he became the light keeper was beyond a shock. It was always rumored that the passing of the powers was unbelievable to witness. Illyris often confirms that it’s… near unexplainable to describe what it was like. Those who witnessed the blessing explained that it was like liquid light poured out of him. They claimed that he screamed, which he honestly doesn’t remember, and whether it was from pain or surprise, he does not know. It was described that his tail turned to liquid light, shimmering and flowing for a moment before evaporating into mist. The mist did not dissipate though, instead settling around his ankles and replacing his tail, suspending his shine in place.
-After Illyris released the star created from the Last Light of Adderon, he turned to address the crowd as their new Light Keeper. Unsure as he was, he raised his arms, staff in hand and wings spread, and began to speak the words the old Keeper spoke to him those years ago. “I know the loss of Keeper Adderon hurts more than we can bear. And while the hurt will never disappear, it will fade in knowing that his star watches over everything that we will do for the rest of time. It is an honor to stand where he once stood, and though I have a lot to learn, I will do my best to be the Light Keeper you deserve.”

(What is the Light Keeper)
The light keeper is a high position in the kingdom of Arion. The abilities are passed down from kalon to kalon and it is impossible for two light keepers to exist at the same time. When the current keeper passes, it takes only moments for another to be blessed as the power transfers to a living kalon. The main purpose of the Keeper is to perform funeral rites by taking the last light from the deceased’s eyes and turning it into a star, which in turn is released into the night sky. This ceremony is known as “The Lifting.” They are a highly-revered position in the political side of the kingdom, and often advisor to the royal family. The staff is the sign of the Keeper and passes down with the blessing. It holds a glowing white diamond that holds a light created by the first keeper. When the keeper changes, the first thing the newly blessed keeper does is come before the kingdom, presented by the royal family. It is during the address that the keeper undergoes their first transition into their nightly form, and is a unique experience for each keeper. After their first transition, the kingdom is invited to pay their respects to the deceased keeper before the Lifting takes place. At this time all the lights in the kingdom are doused, the only light provided in the temple at this time is the light given off by the staff. Once the kingdom has paid it’s respects to the former keeper, the new Light Keeper approaches the center of the temple to pull the light from their predecessor’s eyes. This light is known as the Last Light, and is the purest form of light. The crowd is silent as the Keeper fumbles and combines a tiny portion of their own light with the Last Light and wills it into a concentrated form. It grows in intensity, the Last Light shining through the windows of the temple like a beacon as the kalon lifts their hands, releasing the star and allowing it to drift upwards. As it passes through the open skylight in the temple, the crowd releases their lanterns to accompany the star in its journey to the night sky. The kalon then turns to the crowd, takes possession of the staff and is announced as a fully-fledged Light Keeper.

(Information about the Kingdom of Arion)
Arion is a proud kingdom that is heavily dependent on their crop of precious gemstones, it’s one of the staples of their economy and one of the main source of jobs. The kingdom itself is built into the side of a mountain, using it’s natural defenses to keep them safe. Very few invaders have tried to cross the mountain range and allows the guard to focus on the state of the kingdom inside its walls. The royal princess is the head of Arion, but surrounds herself with a council for their advice and assistance in deciding the best for their people. She will not be appointed to queen unless she marries, a fact she finds ridiculous. The Temple of Light is a sacred place in which the Light Keeper anoints last rights to those who have passed away, and is located at the center of the kingdom. The palace resides nearby, also at the center of the city and is surrounded by walls of large geodes, both decorative and defensive. The shops are extensive and seemingly endless, and bazaars often have lush fabrics adorned with miniscule gemstones. Some of the most important values to the Arionic people are the value in hard work, taking the time to make everything created beautiful, and that everyone has a pure light inside of them, no matter how small. Last rites are never denied to any citizen of Arion.
