Drip. Drop. Pitter. Patter.
The sound of pawsteps echo through the cavern, only slightly louder than the gentle dripping of mineral-rich water onto the rising stalagmites. These formations grow slowly, each drop adding such a minimal amount to the height of them that the change is invisible to the eye. To Pieter, this cave is much like a farm - an immensely slow-growing farm. Harvests are few and far-between, and the fruits of his labor are never guaranteed to be fulfilling. And yet, this is the only thing he could ever imagine himself doing.
Pieter meanders from stalagmite to stalagmite, checking the bigger ones to see how theyโve progressed. He has carefully and painstakingly made cracks in the base of them, leaving just enough space for him to put his paw in and grab what he may need. The iridescent stalactites above drip mineral water that eventually flows into the cracks. The substances in the water stick to the walls of the rock, and small crystals start to form. Pieter tends to these crystals, doing all that he can to encourage their growth. When they get to a good size, he carefully breaks them off, and the cycle starts again. It is indeed a slow process, but it is a rewarding one if done just right.
He leaves many specimens as they are, selling them in their natural form for those mineral collectors who canโt get enough of the beautiful sparkle. Others he wraps elegantly in wire and uses as pendants, or, if theyโre small enough, he drills them and makes them into beads. He always has a supply of glass and wooden beads on hand, and while he waits for the next crystals to be ready, he begins work on a lovely necklace or a pretty bracelet. Pieter likes to focus on the natural world for his designs, but he truly cannot resist anything shiny and colorful. He combines the different shapes and textures to create a piece that reflects his personality. His heart and soul go into every strand, much like the crystals he tends. No one could ever doubt his passion for the art.
Pieter does not go outside very often, as his eyes have adjusted to the darkness of the caverns and are very sensitive to sunlight. He makes his home in a smaller section of the caves where the water is less likely to flood. His possessions are few: a simple bed, a trunk of beads, and a padded box for the harvested crystals. His tools rest on a makeshift workbench, a giant slab of stone sitting atop two smaller ones. He keeps them in fine working order, as his condition makes it hard for him to go out and buy new ones. They may not be the newest model - his drill could certainly use an upgrade - but they have served him time and time again.
Everything about Pieterโs life is simple and slow-going, but he wouldnโt have it any other way.
