Aiden watched as his friend David got adopted by a loving family. They left with David slung over the dad's shoulders, David turned and looked at Aiden, waving goodbye before they were out of view. Aiden frowned. In the orphanage, you didn't get many friends for long, since they usually get adopted a few weeks later. Sighing, Aiden looked down and twiddled with his thumbs. The owner of the orphanage, Miss Eleanor, walked up to him.

"Aiden? Is everything alright?" She asked, looking down at him. Aiden looked at her, and smiled.

"I'm fine, Miss Eleanor. It's just.. All my friends seem to be adopted, except for me.." He murmured.

Miss Eleanor sat down beside him, and wrapped her arm around him comfortingly. "Don't you worry, Aiden. I'm sure someone will adopt you soon. Just because it doesn't happen right away, doesn't mean it won't ever happen." Placing a gentle kiss to his forehead, she got up and left.
A big, goofy grin spread across his face as she left. Miss Eleanor was a mother figure to him, and he enjoyed her presence. If only she could adopt him. The thought of his real parents leaving him on the steps of the orphanage, because they couldn't provide, nearly brought him to tears. He pushed the thought away in his mind, shaking his head. That was a thought for another day.

Hopping off of the bed, he went outside to play with any of his remaining friends. Opening the big doors, he saw kids playing jump rope, soccer, and tag. Smiling, he ran to his friends playing soccer.
"Wait for me!" He exclaimed, jumping into the game.

Later during that day, the clock ticking quietly, slowly turning from 6:59 PM to 7:00 PM, the orphanage was quiet. Kids were coming back from dinner, which was a delicious meal provided by the chef, Mister Michael. He had seen Miss Eleanor talking with Mister Michael often before, hushed whispers of rumors of the two 'like-liking' each other made its way through the orphanage. Aiden couldn't deny he entertained the thought of Miss Eleanor and Mister Michael like liking each other, in his mind they would be cute together.
Aiden had been reading the book "Of Mice and Men" recently, he was learning how to read from Miss Eleanor, and she had suggested the book. It was a really interesting book, and he could honestly slightly relate to George Milton and Lennie Small.
Moving from place to place, never having a solid home. Whatever friendships formed while they were in one place, suddenly broken apart from having to leave. The feeling of loneliness. He quickly shut the book and put it on the nightstand beside him,
sighing. There was, without a doubt an emotional hole in his heart, and nothing could fill it. Even if he got adopted. The thing about adoption... Everyone goes for the small babies, or younger children. Never the mostly grown pre-teens and teenagers.
He's known kids who were sixteen when he first came in and he watched them as they stayed until they were legally an adult.
Aiden was now nine years old, will someone ever adopt him at this age? Tears formed in his eyes. All these thoughts were so overwhelming, and he didn't know how to deal with them. He didn't want to.
Aiden heard the sound of someone coming down the stairs, he quickly rubbed his eyes and turned onto his side in his bed. He looked over his shoulder and saw Miss Eleanor, smiling.

"Hey, guys!" She called into the room full of kids, who were talking. Slowly the chatter died down, but whispers could still be heard if you listened hard enough. "I just got a call.. and Mister Lorenzo will be coming down to sing to you guys!"
Everyone smiled and cheered. Mister Lorenzo was a singer who would often come to the orphanage to sing to the kids. Never to adopt though, he always said 'That time just hasn't come yet.' Aiden never knew what Lorenzo meant by that.
He smiled, despite his current depressed mood. Lorenzo always had the best songs that could cheer up anyone, and would be stuck in your head for days, if you were lucky enough to remember the song lyrics.

Miss Eleanor left and everyone began to chatter excitingly, eager for Lorenzo to come to the orphanage and sing to them. Aiden sighed in content, and flopped onto his stomach, resting his head between his arms and slowly falling asleep. Dreams filled with wishes of being adopted, having fun, and being free.

The next day, he woke up early at 8 AM to look decent enough to present himself to Lorenzo. The majority of the kids in the orphanage did, in hopes he might adopt one of them. He wore a baggy, hand-me-down green shirt, with long khaki pants. Children in the orphanage didn't wear shoes often, mostly to not wear them out. The majority of them just played bare-foot, and dug out the splinters on their own. Aiden did the same, he wouldn't lie to himself saying he doesn't do that. Everyone nervously checked the clock, as 9 turned to 10, the time Lorenzo usually came whenever he visited, always staying until lunch. Kids paced the room, twiddling their thumbs, or nervously fidgeting as the minutes went by agonizingly slow. Everyone's ears perked as they heard a car driving up. Rushing to the window to see who it was, everyone saw it was Lorenzo. He was getting out of his car, carrying his big guitar.
The kids cheered, and Aiden cheered along with them. Kids rushed out of the orphanage, screaming and cheering, shoving themselves onto Lorenzo and hugging him.
Aiden struggled to see him over the heap of kids, he was always in the back.

"Hey, kids! Calm down, calm down.. Okay, now where's Miss Eleanor?" He yelled over all them.

Collectively, the kids rushed into the center to go get Miss Eleanor, eager to please, leaving Aiden and Lorenzo alone.

"Boy, are they eager today!" Lorenzo laughed, and looked down at Aiden, who was quiet. "How are you doing today, little man?" He kneeled down and ruffled Aiden's hair.

He laughed, and fixed his hair. "I'm fine, thanks for asking, Mister Lorenzo. Any fun plans for today?" Aiden questioned.

Lorenzo nodded, "Mhm, I plan to spend the whole day with you, though. I plan to make today a good day for you, little man. Follow me."
Lorenzo slung his guitar over his shoulder, and took Aiden's hand.

"Let's go to that bench over there." Aiden pointed to the bench in the distance. Lorenzo nodded, and trailed behind.

Once they reached the bench, they sat down and looked up at the sky. The sun shining bright, and warm, the two sat in silence. Thoughts buzzed around in Aiden's mind. What does Mister Lorenzo have planned? Why is he spending the whole day with him?
Aiden looked at Lorenzo, and quickly said, "Do you think I'll ever be adopted, Mister Lorenzo?"

Lorenzo looked down at him, shocked. "Of course. Why do you ask?" He placed a hand on Aiden's shoulder.

"Well.. I just have a feeling I'll be in here for the rest of my life." Aiden mumbled, embarrassingly looking down at the ground.

"Believe me, Aiden Ezekiel Guthrie, you will be adopted." Lorenzo said in a firm, yet comforting voice. Aiden looked back up at him.
"Really? You think so?"

Lorenzo's gaze softened. "I know so. Now, how about a song?"

Aiden eagerly nodded, and Lorenzo took his guitar and began tuning it.
Strumming a tune, he began,
"Never saw the sun shining so bright, never saw things going so right. Noticing the days hurrying by, when you're in love, my how they fly. Oh, blue skies. Smiling at me, nothing but blue skies, do I see."

Lorenzo took a few rests, before beginning the rest of the song,"
"Blue skies, smiling at me. Nothing but blue skies, do I see. Blue days, all of them gone. Nothing but blue skies, from now on."

He finished singing with a final strum of his guitar. Aiden began clapping, and complimenting Lorenzo. "Wow!! That was really good, Mister Lorenzo! Did you compose that just for me?" He asked.
Mister Lorenzo calmed down Aiden, before nodding. "Yes, I did. Now, lets go for a stroll little, dude."

After going on a long walk with Lorenzo, talking about various things like what adulthood is like, taxes, adoption, and other trivial things about life. The two also discussed the book Aiden was reading. Eventually, it became lunchtime and Aiden and Lorenzo returned to the orphanage, where a bunch of envious kids awaited them. All the kids gave Aiden glares in envy as they walked in,
heading to the cafeteria.
"Ignore them, little dude. You're day will be a good day today." Lorenzo assured him. Aiden nodded, and continued walking.

As soon as they reached the cafeteria, Aiden got his lunch of chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes and green beans with chocolate milk. Lorenzo sat next to him, closely watching him as he ate. Aiden didn't pay attention to Lorenzo, he was starving. He noticed,
though, that Miss Eleanor had sat next to him.
"Hi, Miss Eleanor!" He said, with a mouthful of nugget.
Miss Eleanor laughed, and gently scolded him. "Don't talk with your mouth full."
Aiden nodded, picking up his milk and gulping it down. Before he could set it down, though, he noticed that there was an envelope.
Quizzically, he grabbed it and looked at Lorenzo and Miss Eleanore. They nodded, allowing him to open it. His heart pounding in his chest as he took out a card.
It was a birthday card.
But it wasn't his birthday. Was it? He honestly forgot when it was.
Slowly opening it, he read in big, letters,
YOU'RE ADOPTED!!!
Say hi to your new parents, Miss Eleanor and Mister Michael!

Aiden dropped the card in awe. His mouth open and eyes slowly filling with tears of joy. He slowly looked up and saw Mister Micha- his Dad in front of him.
"Surprise!" exclaimed Lorenzo and his new mom and dad.

He burst out in tears and hugged his new mom. "T-Thank you!!" He said in between sobs.

He had calmed down after awhile, and turned to Lorenzo. "Mister Lorenzo, did you know about this?" He asked.
Lorenzo smiled, "Yes, I did." He hugged Aiden.

Miss Eleanor spoke up, "You'll live with me here, for awhile, until I can find someone suitable to run the place. I hope you can accept us as your parents."
Aiden nodded, and ran into her stomach giving her a big hug, breathing in her scent. "I can.. mom. I can.."
