What did she plan on baking today? Who was she planning on baking for? Bending over on her chair, s
he reached eagerly towards the closed cookbook that sat on the kitchen table. It was an old book, wo
rn and torn from the constant use; it was a miracle that Lydia could still read it without squinting her
eyes and struggling.
Surely she could’ve chosen any other book. Her shelves were stacked with cooking guides, both new
and old, and some still yet to be read. However, this book was special to her, a gift from her mother..
a mother that was long gone. The book was given to her came with a promise: she will follow her pas
sion, and even if others try to tell her she can’t do something, she will persevere to the end.
Upon opening the book, Lydia couldn’t help but wonder how she knew.
The book was filled with her mother’s recipes, from custard-filled éclairs to chiffon pies. Pages mark
ed with red ink were her mother’s favorites; and amusingly to her, those recipes always had “strawb
erry” written somewhere in the title.
So Lydia started baking. She started cooking. She found herself enjoying every minute of it. She foll
owed her mother’s instructions exactly; sure, she messed up a couple times, but quickly and easily d
id she learn. It didn’t take her long before she completed the book and she continued to bake, using
other books for reference. Of course, she never stopped using her mother’s gift… especially on days l
ike today.
It was May 14th, a special day for a special mother. Her precious cookbook was opened to a strawber
ry shortcake recipe, a heart scribbled in red ink around the page number.
