teenage years:
The bell rang. Julia flipped her hair and her boyfriend, a tall football jock, leaned in and kissed her. "Stay beautiful" he cooed to her as he glided away, down the hall. "That's easy," she murmured to herself as she headed to class. High schoolers swarmed the halls like salmon struggling upstream to their next classes. Julia had Social Studies next, but she floated past the open door of the classroom and bounced down the stairwell, to rendezvous with her cheerleader friends. Their winged eyes looked up at her as she descended down the steps, and they finished up their last whispers before she joined them. "What's up?" Julia smiled, adjusting her shirt.
"Girl, you will not believe what happened! Some random guy just came up to us and tried to be all friendly. He was fat and gross. He must've been new, or maybe he's just stupid enough to think we'd hang out with him."
"Eww!" Julia whined, sticking out her tongue in a grimace. They chattered and laughed, and the halls grew empty. The last stragglers were heading to class. One of them entered the stairwell. He gave a soft smile and headed upstairs. Julia didn't recognize him, but by her girlfriends' reaction she knew exactly who he was. They froze in unwelcoming silence, narrowed eyes following the Kalon until they heard the heavy doors shut behind him.
Becky turned to Julia. "See what I mean?"
"Yeah," Julia scoffed, "and he's as ugly as you said."
"How dare he think he can just walk up to us! What say we get revenge on him?"
Devious grins materialized on pretty faces and the Kalons snickered and giggled at the thoughts and ideas that appeared in their circle.
Lunch came. The girls stood casually in the stairwell, knowing that when the strange boy had gone upstairs for his class, he'd probably come down the same way for lunch.
It was hard to blend in with the flow of students when they were just standing, unmoving. But no one questioned the popular kids. Five pairs of eyes scanned the river of tired students, until one of them nudged another and tilted her head towards some ears poking out of the crowd and messy hair bouncing with each step. It was him.
Like a well-oiled machine, they followed quietly after him, talking about useless things just so they wouldn't be suspiciously and silently trailing him. When the boy pulled off to the side to tuck his books under his arm and spin the lock that held his locker shut, the girls took note of the location, but kept walking right past, uninterested. They got what they needed, they knew which locker was his.
Laughter erupted when the girls saw him the next day, covered in glitter from a confetti bomb they'd snuck into his locker. Opening it triggered the explosion that made him fall back in surprise, and colourful bits of paper and plastic sprinkled down in celebration. Julia had never seen someone turn so red. He ran off with his head down and tail between his legs.
"What a loser." Becky snickered
"I know, right?" Julia laughed.
"Well, that takes care of him. I hope he learned his lesson to stay in his lane." Sasha said, hands on her hips. The girls laughed as they walked away to enjoy their lunch.
They hadn't seen him for weeks. It was a big school, and maybe they just didn't pay enough attention to the people in the hallway. But one day, Julia was walking to school late. She'd slept in and her first class was already halfway through. She didn't regret the extra time to sleep, but her grades were slipping and if they got too low her step dad wouldn't buy her the car she wanted.
She was texting her friends when she bumped in to someone. She looked up at the boy they'd tormented a few weeks ago.
"Look where you're going!" She snarled.
The boy, Theodore, bent down to pick up his books that he dropped. Julia kicked them away from him. He glanced up at her, a look of disapproval, but quickly looked away.
She studied him. He was on the smaller side. He had messy hair, and a nerdy face. He was chubby and didn't appear to enjoy sports. Julia recalled he used to walk with his head high, but after being bested down by her and her friends, he walked with his head down to avoid making himself noticeable.
This was not the kind of guy Julia wanted to be even seen with. Without another word she walked away.
The next day, Julia was in a panic.
"Where is it?" She panted, running round the empty classroom.
"Help me look for my phone!" She demanded. Her friends stood off idly to the side, uncaring.
Julia would not give up until she was forced to. The janitor kicked her out of the classroom, and told her to go home. He said someone would find it and put it in the lost and found.
"No they won't!" She pleaded. "It's the newest iPhone! What idiot wouldn't keep it for themselves?"
The janitor didn't care. He had a job to do, and he wanted to go home. Julia left, defeated.
She came to school early the next morning. "Is it here?" She said aloud, as the janitor walked by. "It better be." She scowled, and shot him the 'evil eye'. He did not care, and carried on with his mop.
To her distress, it was not. She skipped class to try and look for it, but it seemed futile. She was walking down the hall when she heard someone say, "Hey."
She turned around. Standing there was the loser boy with a phone in her hand.
"Yours?" He asked, holding it out to her. The lock screen identified it as Julia'a. She squealed with joy and reached to grab it. He snatched it back. She looked up, shocked.
"I'll give it," he assured her, "but first, you have to tell me. Why are you so mean to me?"
Julia growled. "Because you're fat, you're a loser, and you will never be as good as me." She grinned, hoping to get a good reaction.
She did not. Theodore shielded himself from the words and didn't flinch when the smut came out her mouth.
"Well," he sighed, "I suppose you can think what you want to think." He was going to say something else, but he took a deep breath instead. He held out her phone. After she took it, he walked away without a word.
Julia hesitated. She was surprised he didn't spit back hateful words, but instead was the bigger person. That caught her off guard.
A day later Julia was sitting in the hall with her friends. "Come on guys, just one piece!"
"No." Becky laughed. "You should've brought your own lunch."
Becky knew full well that Julia had simply forgotten. Becky had more than enough to share, but liked the power she had over Julia. She made a point to throw out her leftovers in the garbage right in front of her.
"Screw you guys. I'm gonna ask someone else." Julia got up and left the group behind, they laughed as she did.
Julia banged on the vending machine's glass. A measly bag of chips was was wedged there, stuck. The machine had eaten her money and given her nothing. By now class had started, and she had no one to ask for food from.
A sandwich wrapped in plastic wrap landed in front of her. She turned around. Theodore gave a weak smile. "Hungry?" He asked.
Julia bit back a snappy response. She was going to ask how dare he talk to someone so popular like instead, she thought about how class had already started, and he was missing it for her.
"Thanks." She said, and started eating.
He stood there for a second, wanting to stay and eat with her. But he decided against it and left. She found herself wanting him to stay.
That night she was up late, laying in her bed and thinking about Theo. And for the first time in her life, she felt a twinge of guilt for what she'd done. She sent a text to Becky, who was also up late at night.

Julia turned off her phone and tried to go to sleep. Her stomach churned.
The next day, she found Jeremy. She tried to remember the last time her helped her out, not just give her meaningless compliments. She wanted to remember a time he found her phone, or gave her food when she didn't have any...
She took a deep breath. She told him.
He was surprised. The only thing that came out of his mouth was "but you're the hottest girl in school. I'm the hottest guy. You can't throw that away."
Even though Julia was the one to break it off, she was heartbroken. Was that all she meant to anyone? Her looks?
A wave of realization came crashing down on her. She wasn't the only one who was judged and valued by her appearance.
She found Theo in the hallway. He looked happy to see her, but tried to hide it. Julia trembled. She'd lost her friends that day, everyone she'd ever known. She gave it all up for him.
"I'm sorry," she sobbed, and before she could go on he comforted her with a long, tight hug. "I was so mean to you... I'm sorry." Julia's heart ached, her stomach was flipped, and her shoulders felt a thousand times heavier than normal.
Theodore could have taken this opportunity to tell her how horrible she was to him. But he didn't. Instead, he sat with her as she poured out her feelings. Unlike the football jocks, he didn't move to take advantage of her, or invade her fragile state. Theo had a good heart, and always showed her it. This was the moment that Julia took a real look at him. She saw him with her heart, not her eyes. He wasn't the nerdy boy anymore, he was the brave, heart-of-gold guy she never knew. Julia made a vow that day that she would hold for the rest of her life. Never again would she see judge someone by their appearance, only by their true nature.
This is why, every time Julia meets someone for the first time, she closes her eyes. She doesn't want her old, judgmental self to come out again and see someone by their appearance. And this is how, in the high school filled with teachers and math classes, the best lesson she ever learned in her entire life came from a boy who closed her eyes.
