what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? cinco de mayo is a holiday in Mexico celebrating the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French in the battle of Puebla, on may 5th, 1862. However, many people believe it is Mexican Independence Day, but that is celebrated on sept. 16.

What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate?
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independence day like meny believe. Mexican independence is celebrated Sept.16. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army's unanticipated victory over the French army of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla.

what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate?

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores that initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain.
