His eyes are closed because of "the state of our world" in his words. He's a total environmentalist and he hates how people treat the earth. He hates how people litter and just shrug off the issue of global warming. He often goes around collecting litter and recycling everything he can find.

why are their eyes closed? She lost someone to cancer in their brain which caused them to lose their eyesight. Since their death, she no longer wants to see the world, because 1) she is inspired by the fact that they could stand to see the beauty in the world despite having a horrible card dealt to them. She wishes to see the unseen beauty that they saw. And 2), it is difficult for her herself to continue to be in a world without the other kalon. She closes her eyes because she doesn't want to see the cruel world which took them from her.

why are their eyes closed? She's mmmm-blocking out the haters! Okay, but seriously, Lynn is trying to get over some hate she's received. She is only one of the countless Kalons out there that is subjected to cyberbullying on the daily. Whenever the mean, spiteful messages get to be too much, she takes a step back, closes her eyes, and reminds herself that none of the cruel words mean a thing. That they don't define who she is, or the things that she takes interest in. Sometimes it's hard, and closing her eyes only makes her want to cry, but she stays strong. If you ever see Lynn in front of her laptop or holding her phone with shut eyes, it probably means she has received a not-so-nice message. It's just her way of regaining her composure and feeling in control of the situation at hand by losing sight of whatever made her upset.
