[ Job Description ]
Nicholas Guseni is a renowned scientist. Having a vast knowledge over many branches of science, his interests lie mostly in quantum theories, alternate dimensions and genetical engineering. Nicholas has been known to make successful researches that benefit a lot of people, and many have praised him for his brilliance and determination to make the world a better place. Nicholas works in an institution. His intelligence and way of thinking can often be unfathomable, but many trust his work. As well as being a scientist, Nicholas is also an inventor. He has a few patents already, but invention is not really his main focus.

Currently, Nicholas is working on a very mysterious and difficult research. He is the head of Project AT, in which AT is an abbreviation of Alternate Time-space. This project researches about alternate dimensions floating around near the one he lives in. The main purpose of this project, as stated by Nicholas himself, is to properly understand how alternate dimensions work, how alternate times knit themselves together into such a complex network, and putting this knowledge to good use. Good use involves things like developing a safe and efficient mean of transportation between dimensions, even if those dimensions are not closely linked to each other. Dimensional travel can be a good thing for the people of his dimension, as it improves inter-dimensional relationships and can open the dimension up to resources otherwise unavailable.

However, Project AT is currently facing a problem. The status of dimensions are unstable, with dimensions jumping out of their usual positions and dimensional networks threatening to collide into each other and result in the demise of many dimensions at once. Project AT's current aims are to find how to stop such a catastrophe from happening, before it's too late for all dimensions.

What does he think of his job?

"What I think about my work? Well, I have long had an interest in science and mathematics. Since I was a Viscling, I have always been excited about those subjects, and... well, I don't mean to brag, but people have always turned to me for my intelligence. As a young Viscling, I dreamed of helping many people, and making the world a better place. That is what I am doing, and what I believe I am doing. Helping many people and attempting to make the world a better place. I think it's a noble goal for any person, and my job as a scientist is just one of the millions of ways to accomplish this goal. Admittedly, sometimes, I run into some troubles with my research. Thousands of experiments failing, and some research proves negative. However, this one goal helps me to realize that I should never give up, for the sake of many. When doing my research, I have one thought that keeps me going. That thought is that when I succeed, I will be able to make lives better with my newfound knowledge.

You might have heard the phrase about making sacrifices for the greater good. With my line of work, this statement proves to be truer than ever. There are big sacrifices to be made. One might even lose one's life, like... what happened to my unfortunate son. He, too, was... a scientist. He shared the same views as I do. That our research would make the world a better place. Even now that he's gone, I still hold on to that, knowing that he would've wanted me to...

Well, it doesn't really matter how I FEEL about what my job entails. It doesn't matter what must be sacrificed. What matters in this job is the outcome."

"Professor Guseni!"

Nicholas abruptly looked up from beneath the stack of papers he was working on. In his surprise, his paw knocked some of the papers he was working on from the desk. The sheets of paper flew around the room, and the horned Viscet quickly grabbed his mug of hot coffee before it fell to the cold, hard ground. The brown liquid inside the porcelain mug spilled out and scalded his paw fur, making the scientist quickly set the mug down onto his desk. Nicholas grimaced as he cradled his reddened paw. Adjusting his reading glasses, he looked at the newcomer standing in the doorway with a scowl. "Don't you KNOCK?!" he shouted.

"I'm sorry, Professor. But there's something you urgently need to see..." the Viscet said, in a polite and apologetic tone. However, her voice held a note of urgency in it. Nicholas couldn't just ignore that note. It must be very important for her to just barge into his private study like that. He got up, setting his reading glasses down on his desk. Part of him wondered what could be so urgent. Quickly pulling on his lab coat, the Viscet followed his fellow scientist out of his study, closing and locking the door behind him. A sign swung from the door. It read: Do not disturb. Ironically, many seemed to be keen on disturbing him during his busiest hours of reading through his research papers and re-thinking failed experiments. It drove Nicholas to be the irritable Viscet most of his fellow scientists knew and admired, although Nicholas have long realized that his friends were sometimes too intimidated by his demeanor to approach him casually. During his spare time, Nicholas secretly grabbed books on how to be friendlier. How to change his irritable demeanor into a friendlier, more approachable one. Like his son. Despite all the workload he had, he had always spared time for his father, and always had a smile and a cheerful tone in his voice.

Nicholas stared at his paws as he walked, his mouth set into a thin line. His eyes bore no emotions. There was no time for such reminiscence. There was never any time for such reminiscence. Curled tail bobbing behind him, he quickly walked across the cold, hard, tiled floor of the laboratory. Raising his horned head, he observed the work of his fellow scientists. All of them seemed to be rushing about, hard at work with something. Which was good. Hard work and diligence like that was always what Nicholas sought for in his teammates. He found himself in front of a large metal door. His fellow scientist walked to a screen next to the door. Paws flying over the touch screen, she input the special combination to opening the door and scanned her pawprint. The door swirled open.

A huge monitor was attached to the back wall of the room, nearly filling up the entire back wall. A control panel was stretched out in front of the monitor. It was littered with colorful, glowing buttons and flickering LED lights. Nicholas studied the diagrams on the monitor and let out a gasp, his curled tail flicking uneasily at the sight of it. There was a loud beeping emitting from the monitor. Running to the control panel, Nicholas's paws flew over the buttons. He zoomed into a certain dot. Another dot seemed to be slowly moving towards it in an unsteady fashion. "Oh no..." he breathed.
"It's bad, isn't it, Professor?" the other Viscet said, a note of worry in her voice.
"This is more than bad, Dr. Lily!" Nicholas said, his voice weighed with the gravity of the situation. "That network of dimensions is coming closer and closer to our network... A collision would be catastrophic!"
"What shall we do, Professor?" Lily asked, staring at the monitor with a worried look in her eyes.
"Don't worry, there's still time. But we need to make a breakthrough..." Nicholas answered. He muttered something softly under his breath, causing Lily to prick up her ears.
"Pardon me, Professor, I didn't quite catch what you said..." Lily said.
"The anomalies... There must be a way to safely travel to that other dimension and check for them.."

Lily gave a small gasp. "Are you suggesting... we try out the Artificial Portals?" she asked, a small quiver of worry in her voice.
"...yes, we have no other choice."
"After what happened with your..."
Nicholas stomped his foot hard on the ground, causing Lily to break off mid-sentence. He sighed, ears drooping and gaze casted towards the ground. He didn't like to be reminded of what happened to his son.
"I-I'm sorry..." Lily squeaked, meekly.
"No, I'M sorry," Nicholas sighed, wearily. "But... Did you really think I would risk the lives of real people once more for this project? After what happened... to him?"
"Then... what do you propose we do?" Lily questioned.

Nicholas turned on his heels, his curled tail giving small flicks every now and then to signal that he was deep in thought. He muttered something inaudible, before striding back to his study with Lily following close behind him. He approached his mess of a desk. Crouching down, he opened a drawer attached to the side of the desk, and got something out. It was wrapped neatly in a folder, and the words "Project AT" were written on the folder's cover. He looked at the folder, his paws grasping it tightly. He had been debating with himself for quite some time now. This folder could change everything for their project, but he wasn't sure how his team would react. He gave a small sigh. What with the new development, there was no time to hesitate. This could be their only chance of rooting out what was causing the strange occurrences between dimensions.

Nicholas pawed over the folder to Lily. Lily opened the folder. She skimmed through the papers, and gave a small gasp. "Artificial Travelers?" she asked.
"Indeed," Nicholas said, giving a small nod. "In order to root out what is going on with the dimensions, we need something to be sent between the dimensions. Robots are not sufficient, and I will not allow another life to be lost."
"So... You're implying, we should MAKE our own travelers? So that they can find out the root of the problem?" Lily said. Nicholas gave a small smile. He could practically see the gears turning in Lily's mind.
"Yes. Creatures without souls and emotions, but sapient enough to think for themselves."
"Don't you think... sacrificing them... would be a little too inhumane?" Lily asked, tentatively. Nicholas scowled, causing Lily to wish that she had not said those words.
"No. Would you rather REAL people die for this cause?" Nicholas asked, a bit of a sharp tone in his voice.
"No... Of course not. You're right... We should use Artificial Travelers. What's a few creatures, if we could stop a potential catastrophe that would kill everyone?" Lily agreed reluctantly, nodding.

"Then there's no time to waste. We do need funding for this project, after all," Nicholas said. "Let's announce the new plans to the whole team."

[ Scientific Log Entry ]
March 15th, XXXX

The new batch of artificial eggs are incubating well. I have labelled them H05, H3N4, L45, and T1L4. They are the newest attempts at Project Alternate Time-space. It seems that their incubation process are currently doing well. However, I must not get my hopes up. This is only the first phase of the new batch, and most of the AT experiments have made it past this stage. It's what comes after which are usually... disappointing. Even so, I believe we have made a new breakthrough. This time, we have injected the eggs with small samples of real Viscet DNA. I hope that this helps them to retain their shape better. But, again, I mustn't get my hopes up too much. If this does prove to be a success... well, a whole door of new possibilities will open up for us. We have divided our team into several groups; each group taking care of an egg. My group is taking care of L45, while the other groups are taking care of the others.

This next experiment seems very interesting.
