a memory of spring: 499/500
Oleander was a small babusagi, in presence only of course, but somehow most babusagi didn't realize whenever he entered a room. It was like a superpower! Or perhaps it was a super weakness, because despite the fact that Oleander didn't mind not being noticed, his 'invisibility' had led to some fairly tricky situations. Even for an introvert, getting forgotten, especially when you're out on a hike, is not something you want to happen.
It had been a pleasant spring day, perhaps a bit too pleasant. It was the kind when the air was sticky with pollen and buzzing with bees. The sun had shone his face for the first time since the groundhog saw his shadow and the flowers had begun to show off their new spring fashion. It was a picture-perfect scene, so of course Oleander's parents has to go and ruin it by deciding to hike. Oleander was very much not a hiking person so maybe he was biased, but he was fairly sure even the most athletic babusagi would shy away from hiking in this insufferable heat. His parents were clearly made of something stronger than plastic.
"Momma? Poppa? Can we find shade? My tea is boiling," the young babusagi whined. He was forced to catch up and tap on his parents' shoulders to get their attention, so preoccupied in the 'wonders of nature' they had been. "Hmm? Oh of course Ollie, yes of course." His mother patted him on the head lightly and then returned to chatting with his father, pointing out a couple of crocuses poking their heads from the soil. Neither one seemed near inclined to move somewhere cooler, so Oleander took matters into his own paws.
"Okay Momma, I'm going to find shade, okay?" He didn't get an answer, but didn't wait to get one either- he was sure his plastic was melting as he spoke! Oleander settled 'neath a blooming wisteria tree whose purple flowers blocked out most of the sun. Within his cool cavern of lilac, the babusagi finally found the peace and relief he had wanted. Now he could get back to what he had been working on; his newest ballad. Inspired by the flowers, which he now felt charitable towards again, Oleander had decided to compose and ode to spring.
"Oh flowers painted in your frivolous ways, from zinnias to the sy of dais. Reaching to the sun so hot, except the wisest forget-me-nots." Composing rhymes, even stupid ones, had always taken a lot out of Oleander, and the heat was beginning to put him to sleep. So the boy obliged the sun, curling up around his favorite flowers just for a tiny nap. But the tiny nap drew on, and when Oleander finally awoke the sun had set and his parents gone. At least he had plenty of time to compose and admire the blooms as he dragged his body all the way down the mountain. So much for not hiking.
