The day began with a question, well, not in fact a question. More of a comment with an inquiry imbedded within it. It wasn't directly asked, but it still expected an answer.
"You slept with stones under your pillow," she said, lounging on the floor where both of them had fallen asleep. Her voice was quiet, and her eyes sparkled with a calm curiosity. Her name was Elementary, but he had known her long enough to shorten that title to a nickname. To him, she was Elle, the kalon who would stop at nothing to figure him out. That included discovering the motive his odd habit.
"Haven't I told you before, I'm superstitious." He yawned, shutting his eyes and resting his head on his arm. He didn't care much for explaining, he always liked to keep Elle wondering. He figured that way she'd stay interested in him, and stay his friend.
"Never heard of that superstition," she was giving him a hard time as always, desperate to get to the root of the truth. He figured she would abandon it and move on seeing his disinterest in answering, but she persisted. "I'd really like to know." She gave a sort of look with that statement, the type of look that she always gave when she was begging to know something. It made him crack in an instant. He really couldn't say no to her.
"Fine," he groaned, rolling over on his side to face her. "Sadness, that's the secret."
She didn't seem satisfied with that answer, "Sadness? What does that have to do with stones under your pillow?"
"It's a superstition my mom taught me, sleep with stones under your pillow to make sadness go away."
"Weird," she sighed, slowly shutting her eyes and falling back asleep. She was appeased by his answer, and as always, she didn't pry any more.
