Learning the world:

David's world is one ruled over in masked tribal territories.

He is not the only one who wears a mask, in fact, just about everyone where's a mask from the age of thirteen onwords.

Each tribe has a specific ritual ceremony for masks, offering a prayer to the deity whom they believe in, to bless the mask. Masks come in all shapes and sizes, some change shape when they are placed on the face of their master, others change color. But the one thing that all masks share in common is how they engrave what is called the character prophecy. These are the designs etched into the mask at its own will, the design will signify whether their final character will have a positive or negative effect on those around them, followed by the color which always begins as prestine white, changing to the first colors of their personality, then to the secondary basics, and finally determining with the last color which finalizes the over all negative or positive personality trait that will appear in the true reveal of their heart.

The only person who can read the prophecies is called the Mask Reader, someone chosen once every seventy years, who naturally is able to read the masks with a gift bestowed upon them from their deity. No matter the positive or negative of the prophecy shown, they are not allowed to discuss it with anyone but their deity, and even then it will be futile, for the masks never lie and deities do not change designs of masks whose master is alive and has yet to fulfill their role. Sharing the information they are shown is a bad omen, often leading the owner of the mask spoken of into a termoil that veers them off the path they were intended to follow. In some cases it can cast deeper trouble upon the Tribe in which the prophecy was bestowed upon. Telling someone their own path is also an extremely bad omen, something that the deities do not forgive ever.

The Tribe of Complexity (ToC):

Known for their ability to solve Puzzles, Mysteries, and Riddles, as well as create them. Most tribes avoid them for the supposed bad omen of trouble that is said to follow them. They are harder to track, to attack, and to find over all. The entrance to their village is a giant maze known as the Walls of Confusion. Being 100ft high by five feet wide per "hall", Layered with about seventy "halls" all the way around. The walls are ovular, domed over like a rim, making them impossible to latch onto if an invader tried to scale them. The legitimate entrance to get into the maze is under ground, unless one has been showed by a tribe member or searched for months on end, the likelihood of finding its exact location is extremely slim. Once inside the actual maze, the hard part begins, these catacomb-like halls reach up only fifty feet of the one hundred feet domed over, are extremely dark and require candle or torch light to see while in the passage. The passage has only one entrance from the outside, but it has six openings leading into the different sectors of the tribe. Anyone who does not know the path must be careful for the dead ends have traps that are intended to lead to their death. On the inside, the market area is on the farthest outskirts along the rim of the wall. There's then a maze-like wall set that leads into the village center where the commoners live, and off to the north side is the government square, a large estate that is gated off all the way around, where the leader, elders, and their families live, and on occasion, the heir or chosen twelve of the generation of the heir.

As for culture:

ToC has been known for their opposite way of life, the esteemed leader is very limited on what they can do in return for allowing the common people to live as they please. Or so they are told by the elders who rule over them like puppet masters.

The tribe does have contact with many other tribes, though they are still relatively disliked, and people prefer when they only stay within the confinement of their walls.

Masks

Masks of this tribe normally possess that of a muted or dark base, and having vibrant lines making a pattern of a maze based on the wearer's personality. Like all masks, these are no different, blank slates with they are crafted, and blessed with a prayer before being placed on the face of the new thirteen year old owner. The permanent pattern will take form of the owner's inner most personality that shall last through all their days.

Gentle- despite his actions of cruelty to those who live in the government estate, David is gentle and compassionate towards his people (the common people)
Patient- no matter the situation, David can sit through hours of anything, listening to what someone has to to say, and determine a verdict, even if it is not in the speaker's favor.
Unforgiving- when someone does something that is unfavorable to him, David does not easily forgive, and most often enjoys seeing them bow at his feet for what they had done, and sometimes even proceeds to give a harsh verdict if he finds what they did to be unacceptable.
Sentimentalist- most do not know this about him, but he often sits in the room he and Uriah once shared, and talks to himself, as if Uriah was there talking to him. He likes to reminisce on all the time they spent together, and doesn't forgive people for eaves-dropping on him.

xxxxx Akane is a simple girl from a small farm village. The people there aren't very well off monetarily, but they get by and live peacefully. Sadly, peace never seems to last and the village was attacked and pillaged repeatedly by raiders, thieves, and other crooks. Wanting to help, but not knowing how, Akane prayed and prayed. She prayed to anything that was listening -- anyone, anyone that could help, even a little. Until one evening as she was finshing her chores for the day, she heard a voice calling to her.

xxxxx "Akane"

xxxxx She looked up at the unfamiliar voice that seemed to echo all around her.

xxxxx "Akane, follow my voice."

xxxxx Suddenly, she seemed to be drawn to the path leading to the forest. Akane knew, however, trusting blindly may get her into all kinds of trouble, so she called out: "Who are you? Show yourself."

xxxxx A puff of smoke that seemed to glow ever so slightly appeared before the forest path.

xxxxx "I am the help you called for."

xxxxx Dazed slightly by the sight before her, she set down what she was holding and followed the puff of smoke in a slight trance.

xxxxx "How are you going to help us?" Akane questioned.

xxxxx "I am going to give you the tools to help yourself."

xxxxx Slightly confused, Akane continued to follow the smoke in silence until they came upon a small shrine. When Akane's eyes drifted across the shrine, she felt herself waking out of her trance, and she glanced around her to get her bearings.

xxxxx "Be calm, we are here," The voice in the smoke said, hovering toward the shrine and disappearing into the box-like center of the shrine. A clicking sound like a key in a lock was heard and a little door opened to reveal a painted wooden mask that had been hidden inside.

xxxxx "Beautiful," Akane said admiringly.

xxxxx "Take the mask, help your village," the voice echoed around her.

xxxxx "What will the mask do?" She questioned.

xxxxx "The mask will enable you to turn into a kalon of great physical strength."

xxxxx "A kalon..." Akane mused. Her village respected kalons greatly, they knew that kalons are intelligent creatures, some smaller ones even lived in the village and helped with the farming. Larger kalons are regarded somewhat as deities of nature or gods on earth.

xxxxx Akane, transfixed by the concept, reached for the mask. She picked it up and held it a small distance from her with both hands and gazed into the eye slots in the mask.

xxxxx Suddenly, there was a feeling of discomfort all over her body and then an intense burning sensation on her arms and legs, letting
out a small cry and removing one hand from the mask, she pulled at the neck of her yukata to look at her shoulder. There were intricate patterns of curves burning into her skin, leaving a slight coloration to the raised skin. Akane's eyes widened at the sight. A small sacrifice for the safety of the village, besides, it does look a bit nice, she thought, taking a deep breath and readjusting her yukata.

xxxxx "Okay," She exhaled and tucked some stray hairs behind her ear, but she paused and felt her ears questioningly. They were now pointed at the tips! Akane's gaze drifted to the mask once again. What amazing power it must hold.

xxxxx Carefully, Akane turned the mask over in preparation to put in on. Her breath became uneven and she shook ever so slightly, nervous to put the mask on. Akane closed her eyes. For the village, she reminded herself and raised the mask to her face and held it there. Opening her eyes, she saw smoke encircling her. A calmness washed over Akane and she bent over to rest on all fours. The smoke cleared and she looked around her and was surprised by the fact that even though she never tied the strings of the mask, it felt as though it was still in front of her.

xxxxx Akane raised her hand to touch the mask and saw a... paw? A swift realization came to her and she looked at herself. Her body was no longer humanoid, but instead that of a large, lithe feline. Akane glanced back and saw her... tail... and noticed her lucky hair charm was near the base of it, glinting in the moonlight. She jumped around with the glee of a child, How is this even possible? Akane then thought it best not to question this generous gift.

xxxxx "Thank you!" She called out, hoping the smoke entity that had brought her to the mask could hear her gratitude.

xxxxx Knowing she had to get back to the village, lest her parents worry about her disappearance. Okay, how do I change back? Worry filled Akane's body, What if I can't? She took a deep breath, It will all be fine, I'll just do what I did to go into this form originally... perhaps?

xxxxx Akane carefully pushed up with her front paws and balanced gingerly on her hind legs. Closing her eyes, she brought one of her front paws to her face. Opening her eyes again, she was happy to see the same smoke once again. When the smoke finally cleared, she felt the weight of the mask on her hand and face. Removing it from her face and then taking the strings on the sides of the mask, Akane tied the mask to her obi. In doing so, she noticed she was no longer wearing her simple yukata, but a luxurious kimono with similar coloring to the kalon form she had just assumed. Akane stroked the fabric of her sleeve, the pattern of the kimono was stunning and elegant. Fans of red and gold danced on a background of black. She shook her head, I can admire it further when I get back home.

xxxxx Excited to show her parent and protect the ones she loves, she briskly walked out of the forest along a simple path all the way home.

A kalon who lives deep in the woods,
a wood ridden with winding trees, with creeping tendrils,
ready to snatch away any unsuspecting kit.

His shack lies deep within the forest's heart,
a home composed of an old fallen sycamore,
halfway rotting, with a hole cut out for the doorway,
and mushroom spores sprouting from it's bark.

Here he practices magic--
the forest supplies him with an abundance of resources for the practice,
and conspires with passing spirits,
who whisper requests of ill-will,
and plead for him to do their bidding.

Of course, he listens not, and they cry louder,
beg him to avenge their untimely demise,
they promise him power, good fortune, the likes.

He is not swayed by their demands; he's learned about self control long ago.
For it was his lack of, that had caused him a fatal mistake--
caused him to put on...

You know

The mask.

He's bound to this forest now-- for as long as he is at the mask's disposal.
Not because it wants him to,
but because he must prevent the mask from getting what it wants.

It is a beast that old thing,
far worse than any restless soul or poltergeist,
blinding his eyes,
and assaulting his ears,
with shrieks of the damned,
and whisperings of terrible events to come,
and even controlling his movements;
his actions on some particularly bad days

These, however, are the pains he must bare,
for the only one responsible for the beast's reign
is himself alone,
and the skull of an oni,
shards of rubies
and a cleverly crafted seal,
all in which he had collected,
to bring the monster to life.

He's kind of a reclusive kalon, even before the mask-- he spent most of his time in the very same woods. People didn't take too kindly to witchcraft and magic and that sort of stuff where he's from. In fact, it's highly frowned upon. He lived in a conservative little town-- one that was rigid in their beliefs. They don't burn the magic users (anymore) but if they had the chance to run them out of town and oust them-- they would. They had many excuses for why it was a terrible thing-- accusing magic users to be mischievious pixies to even being the devil's children-- the rumors were extensive, despite not being backed by any solid fact. And so he was scorned--even though he tried to hide the fact that he could use magic--others would see him wander into the forest at odd hours and knew. Like, what else would a kalon go into the forest so late in the day and so frequently for?

Witchcraft!

Not to mention, you have to have a certain thread in your veins to be able to use magic in the first place. It's genetic. And the towns people knew his mother practiced so they assume he would eventually have done the same. Due to this, he didn't have too many friends growing up-- mothers shielded their children and warned them of the "witch boy." Ironically, it was this treatment that inclined him more towards the practice.

Despite all he's went through in his youth, he's got a pretty normal personality. He might appear brooding and threatening because he is a kalon practicing dark magic in the woods, but he's actually pretty mellow. In fact, he doesn't have a single bad bone in his body. If you'd struck up a casual conversation with him, he'd probably make a great listener and provide pretty sound advice. He's kind of meek though and also rather slow paced-- but one perk about being a recluse living in a dark forest by yourself is that there's no real pressure to rush into anything. He makes his own schedule and does things at his own leisure.

The only thing is, the mask. When he first started dabbling into the dark side of magic, he caught wind of a tale of some courage spell of the ancients. Being the naive kalon he was, he was determined to discover what it was. As much as he wouldn't want to admit to it-- he was seriously afraid that the townspeople would perhaps turn on him and do something terrible one day. Though he was horrified to find that this courage spell actually involved allowing yourself to serve as a vessel for the demon that would make you "courageous." Still, however doubtful he was, he persisted. It wasn't until it was too late-- until he had created the mask and placed it upon his face, did he realize the weight of his actions.

The demon's so called "courage" could very well just be defined as violence. It was something primal-- and it definitely awoke something feral inside him. He lost consciousness for some time before he regained control-- the demon had run rampant in his body in his stead-- and he hadn't an inkling of an idea of the horrors the demon had committed in this time. He'd tried to remove the mask but found he couldn't and panicked, and did the only thing he could think of-- he ran over to the town to ask for help.In this moment he'd had the realization that maybe the townspeople were right-- that magic is a dirty terrible thing. However, as soon as he ran in, crying for help-- he was met with violence. They screamed of the "beast" as stones, pitchforks, even torcheswere launched at him. Had he not been a fast runner, he likely wouldn't have made it out alive.

He has no idea what could have prompted such a reaction-- perhaps it was the threatening appearance of the mask-- but even so, he was just a child crying for help. And they've never tried to attack him before. He can only assume that the demon in the mask is responsible for whatever had happened...

To this day he remains isolated in the forest, his only company being the wildlife, restless forest spirits, and that wretched mask.

That is, until someone decides to blindly meander into "ｔｈｅ ｄｅｍｏｎ'ｓ ｆｏｒｅｓｔ."

Back Story

He was born and raised with his family in issolation for many years. They lived in China, on the side of Mount. Fuji. There, Taboo's father taught him martial arts. His mother however, was the only one allowed to leave the home, in order to purchase the nessesary needs for the family. Taboo's father, was a Lava God. Taboo didn't think of him as specail, and often disobeyed him. He would try to run away from hope, but no matter how fast, sneaky, or quietly he tried, he couldn't. The earth below, would often 'tell' Taboo's father where he was, so it was easy for him to track him down, and bring him back. Taboo never really got to see other people, he would often play with the animals surrounding his home.

He never saw his father's face, because it was always covered in "The Mask". He really couldn't see his mother's either, for her's was always wraped with a black cloth. Even though Taboo couldn't see their faces, his attachment to them was very special. His mother was the teacher of Math, and Litature. Taboo's father, was the Science, and Physical Traning educator. Unfortuneately, his parents both implimented the rules onto Taboo. "No excusses, No Interuptions, No shouting, No laughing, No crying." They would say. He was allowed to smile, and to play at times. But schedual was tight for Taboo. If he wasn't busy, and had nothing to do, his father would ask for his help. Or, his mother would add another chore to his list. Around the time before he turned 13, he became very ill. Since they couldn't see the doctor, they made natural herbs, and hoped eventually he would get better.

Taboo did awaken, but the sickness wasn't cured like it was supposed to. It mainly targeted his throat, and loungs. Since that sickness, he wasn't able to talk. When Taboo turned 13, his father gave him his mask. For the first time he saw his face. But it wasn't what he was expecting to see. His pelt was fadding, his eyes were tired, and he was crying. The household was shocked, they wanted their little Taboo back. Taboo was frightened, but with laying in his mother's arms, made his worries disappear.

Later, his father built a silver slate, and made magma marbles. The marbles held the sign up. Eventually, Taboo's father taught him to use bending (earth bending), to mold the silver slate to create words. Taboo was thrilled! Although something precious to him was lost, he was able to endure, with the result of a new way. Everything was great that day, little did they know that would change...

"HER"

The sun was glistening in the sun, with it's rays shattering through the trees. Taboo was older now, no longer a young child. He was playing in a very small medow with a deer. The deer suddenly perked its ears, and looked to the forest. Taboo followed the eyes of the deer. A beautiful kalon was hiding withing the trees. Taboo quickly stood up to his feet, trying to make out what he was seeing. The young girl kalon realized that she had been spotted, so she began to run. Taboo ran after her, the deer layed down into the grass and began to graze.

Taboo caught up to the girl, and lept out in front of her. She gasp and turned the other way. Taboo forged words onto his silver pallet...

"Please! Wait! Don't be afraid!"

He grasped her hand, but she was still in panic mode. A kalon wearing a scary mask, and animals not fearing him? She screamed for help. Taboo let go of her hand, and the girl fell onto the ground. She trembled looking up at Taboo. He lifted his hands, 'Calm down.' She sat there reading Taboo's silver pallet in disbelief...

"I'm Taboo. I won't hurt you."

She waited silently. The girl slowly got to her feet, her legs very flimsy, like a new born fawn's legs.

"Who are you? Where are you from?" Taboo bended into his pallet these words.

It was a good solid minute before she was able to catch her breath to respond...

"I'm Himari... What are you?"

"I'm..." Taboo didn't know what he was, "... I'm the same as you?"

The girl wasn't very reasured. Her self conscience kept telling her to run, to flee from this scary stranger. But she stayed. This girl wanted answers...

"Why didn't that deer run away from you?! What are you?!" Himari began to freak out.

Taboo didn't know how to respond...

"I don't know, can't you do it too?"

The girl was no longer afraid, more like angry now...

"I won't take this nonsense from you! You will answer me! What are you?!"

Taboo walked to the girl, and slowly took his mask off. Himari wasn't afraid anymore, and neither was Taboo.


Responsibility

It wasn't long that Taboo's father noticed that Taboo would be out longer than usual. Not only that, but he wouldn't bend as much at the table, he wouldn't speak to them. His father wasn't pleased with the new way he was acking. He didn't know whether something was up, maybe horomones, or if it was something else. But Taboo wasn't noticing his recent behavior. He was always lost in thought. After his daily routine, he would adventure out, and meet up with the girl, Himari. But this isn't a fairy tale, neither is it a love story...

Sooner or later Taboo knew that his parents would find out about Himari. Taboo wasn't sure either what they should do. Taboo, and Himari decided, that they had no other choice, than to run away. Taboo didn't like the idea of hurting his family, let alone, lying to his parents to where he was going. Taboo felt himself hurting inside, his heart was pulling in two directions. But after a while, it was no longer feeling bad for lying to his parents, it was more like...

...anger.

When Taboo turned 19, he decided to run away with Himari. They rejoiced with eachother, and he no longer carred what his parents thought, he blamed them for being so alone. That one night, they began to run down the mountian. It was a cold wintery night, and snowflakes were floating slowly to the ground. Taboo's father wasn't in bed that night...

He appeared infront of them. His eyes hot with fire, his hands clenched with a burning desire, and smoke emmiting from this pelt. The moment he layed eyes on Himari, he knew, Taboo would have to suffer the consiquences.

Taboo wasn't going to give up either. He looked at Himari, "Run...". His father quickly advanced. He formed a cumbustion of fire in his hand and slammed it into Taboo's face. His mask cracked, and some peices fell to the ground along with him. Himari quickly ran down the mountian. Taboo's father quickly changed his attention to Himari fading into the distance, and started chasing after her. Taboo quickly got up, and bent the earth to hit his father's right side. Taboo hissed. This was no ordinary fight, he was proving his worth to the family. He was no longer obeying the rules his father set out for him. His father pushed himself up, and looked up at Taboo.

"Foolish decision..." His father hissed at Taboo.

Taboo knew better than to use his abilities against a Lava warrior (His father). His father quickly started to bend, but it wasn't rock, it wasn't magma, it was the volcano. This was his punishment...

Magma blew from the sides of Mount. Fuji. Taboo realized his mistake, he never learned his lesson.
