Rain. The soft drip drops of rain is all amber could hear.It was the beginning of spring so naturally there would be lots of rain.Still with rain comes mud,and mud clogs the fur. With a sigh Amber got off the ledge of the window sill.he overwhelming silence of her house was deafening.Like a silent wave of pressure. She made it down to the cool wooden floors.Nobody came over anymore, not even Jr.Amber made her way to the kitchen, the soft light illuminating the paws in front of her.Maybe she should start baking again.Heh,wouldn't hurt to try.
She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.Sleep.Sleep.Sleeping is all she has been doing lately.A small frown replaced the netural look on her lips. She couldn't help but let out a quiet sigh.
She grabbed the cookie sheet from inside the cupboard, placing it on the counter. She was too short to reach it and often had troubles keeping her balance..She kicked over the stool Jr had made for her.It was old and slightly scratched up.But a stools a stool. She sat upon it happily.her hands going to work. She knew this recipe like the back of her paw.
"chocolate cookie" she mumbled to herself, not realizing it was the first time she had talked today. She gripped the bag of chocolate sweets, the smell of soft sweet sugar filled her nostrils. She didn't feel so alone after that. She smiled softly, popping a chip into her mouth, letting the sweet taste melt into her mouth. The taste reminded her of when her and Jr would bake cookies for the neighbors. She could still hear the soft little laughter's of the young kalon filling her kitchen, the soft sound of music and the smell of the fresh summer breeze wafting from the back door.
Amber snapped back to reality.Back to her empty kitchen and the sounds of the soft rhythm of the rain.Amber got back to work.A cup of this,a sprinkle of that.It was all a blur to her now.She had been so accustom to baking that she became like a machine when she worked.Always keeping pace, never missing a beat.
She blinked softly.A small knock at her door. Was it real. Was any noise created by her real anymore. She froze, ears pinned back.Another soft knock.Amber got off the old stool and made her way past the kitchen, through the lonely living room and to the door.Shaky paws griped the door knob.
"amber" a small voice said.Amber looked through the crack of the door. She was met muzzle to muzzle with a certain kalon.
"Jr?..you came back" she mumbled out.her voice sounding scratchy.Jr nodded softly. She looked at her paws, the rain running along her muzzle.
"can we um..can we bake again?"

"Wise men say....
Only fools rush in.."
The sweet melody came out of Hester's lips and blended perfectly with her ukulele. She had been walking around downtown, singing to whomever happened to pass by.
"But I can't help...
Falling in love with you.."
An elderly couple sitting nearby smiled at her small serenade, and sang along softly.
She had wanted to make people smile, even if it was just for a second.
There had already been a few people she had encountered. A young family, in which the parents grinned sympathetically while their children awed at the music. There had been a lonely man who had been very old, and Hester believed didn't even have a place to stay at night. He had smiled from ear to ear and for a moment, he too forgot any troubles in the world, and his body got absorbed in the sweet lulling melody of a very simple love song.
"Like a river flows...
Surely into the sea..."
She had been singing the whole day, stopping by groups of people who at first confused, proceeded to sing along with her. Some people had asked her a little about her life. She was making most of her income from small gigs all over town- in coffee shops- bars- anywhere. She had been working in music every since school. It wasn't a spectacular pay- but she was passionate about what she was doing and loved it more than anything, and that's all that really matters, isn't it?
Finally, at 7:00 pm, she stopped and made her way to her show for the night. It was to be in a small cozy café- one I her favorites. Hester shuffled her feet at the door. She had been singing all day for complete strangers- but she still felt a little nervous.
There was always this one girl there named Dewitt, who always came to see Hester perform. She was the sweetest person Hester had ever met, and she always spoke with her a little bit after her performances. Hester could always feel the heat rising in her cheeks as Dewitt hugged her and her warm scent engulfed her.
Today, Dewitt had been there early, and she was holding flowers. There was still but an hour until Hester got on stage, so she went to go sit with her, a blush creeping along her face. As she sat down on the small lounge next to her and their hands brushed, both instantly became very flustered and apologized multiple times.
They talked of adventures far and wide, and seeing the whole world, and of simple everyday things, such as how Dewitt's bakery was getting along and their favourite feelings.
Hester's turn to perform came up, and as she walked on stage, she thought of what she might sing tonight.
She began with her old favorite- that she had been singing all day.
As the chords of Can't Help Falling in Love rang out from her ukulele, she quickly noticed the crowd.
"Darling so it goes..
Some things, are just mean to be.."
All of the people whom she'd passed by on the street were there, smiling and enjoying her music. She had never had this many people come to her show. As her eyes scanned the crowd- she felt small tears form at the rim of her eyes.
As the song finally died off, tons of people rushed to greet her and to thank her.
"I-I can't believe so many people came.." Hester exclaimed.
There were people holding signs with varying messages, thanking her for bringing a smile to their faces - telling her she had a beautiful voice - and thanking her for making their city a better place.
Dewitt approached Hester and shyly offering her the flowers, quickly embraced her and pecked her on the cheek.
Hester felt her face heat up intensely as Dewitt giggled. Dewitt had brought pastries and goods for everyone there- her baking skills were unmatched in that part of town.
Hester's wide smile shone across the room and people asked her for a encore, and with tear-brimmed eyes, she got back on stage, because she knew that music could make people come together, even if just for one moment.

art or story that makes you feel snuggly and warm: Winifred was transferred from a private school in Hawaii, and only made a few friends, due to her shyness. Winnie absolutely loves photography and the beach, so she always takes photos of the beach landscape. She got bullied a lot because she is bisexual.

art or story that makes you feel snuggly and warm:
Once when you were little and Gran was still alive, she used to make you help in the kitchen. You were young, three or four and you were learning how to do dishes. Gran would give you the plates and you'd scrub, scrub, scrub until the surface was all clean and shiny and the bubbles had gotten you wet. She would laugh because you'd have a bubble beard from scrubbin, you'd be so into it.
Once the dishes were clean she'd take two plates, forks, knives, and spoons and that's how you knew it'd be pie time. Now pie time was only a Joe and Anne thing. It was made even more special because neither of you were supposed to have it, especially when your mother went on this diet kick and made everyone else join in. You just weren't supposed to have any because of sugar and Gran wasn't supposed to get any because of her health. But did either of you care?
Hecks no!
Gran told you over a steaming plate of Apple pie that she'd die not eating it and for the longest time you believed her. You believed anything back then that'd get you a slice. And gosh it was yummy! Nice and flaky on the outside but gooey and sweet with a special granny smith apple twist that made things dreamy. When you finished eating your face was gooey with the stuff but your Gran couldn't let you go anywhere looking like that. No ma'am what kind of a Gran would she be if she let her favorite granddaughter get all messy? To which you'd laugh and say "I'm your only granddaughter!"
Gran would chuckle and grab your hand and you'd head over to the sink. Once you were apple-pie free well there was so much you could do still, like help in the garden or watch all granpa's favorite shows. Or just draw in Gran's study. Or, if Gran was feeling up to it, you could dance! You loved dancing with Gran!
"Gran can we dance today?" You asked with those big doe eyes you knew would make her crumble. Even if was was just a smidgen. The only one able to resist the "Doe-Eyes" was Gran, specifically because as she informed you countlessly, she invented them.
"Oh honey, you know I wish I could, but Gran has to take her medicine you know."
As expected it didn't work. You deflate like an air balloon. "You can't take it later?" You whine softly, but Gran is always serious about her medicine and the look she gives you lets you know your answer. You sigh again and amble to the living room and flop disjointedly and watch the reruns of the Simpsons.
It was only once Lisa decides she was going to fix something that Gran ambles up to you. You peer up cautiously but Gran is nothing if not understanding. "Cmere dancing queen, Gran needs a partner to the ball."
You all but leap up and you laugh when she takes your hands in her own. She puts on, you guessed it, "Dancing Queen" and the two of you laugh warmly. At some point she twirls you and when you hug her she's warm and old and sturdy. Like a tree, you want to think. A very old but lively one. She smells of cinnamon and a thing you only know as 'old people' but you like hers better than Granpa's. When you finish dancing until you're both tired you cuddle up to her in a quilt on the couch as she tells you older than old stories. Nobody knows it, but Gran was a big somebody back in the day. She fills your ears with stories that sound too wild to be true but with the confidence and certainty of someone who'd been there. You fight to keep your eyes open however, whine angrily at the smallest hint of being sleepy but she takes off your knitted cap and runs her fingers through your hair and tells you she can always tell you more tomorrow. She'll be around that long she thinks. You curl up like a baby, fingers ghosting through your hair, and the promise of tomorrow in your ears.

1 extra:
Your name is Joanne, but everyone who knows ya better had better call ya Joe. There's only one Anne in your family and that's Gran. She's been dead for too long not to have her name. Least they could do was let her keep it. You're young enough, fresh out of highschool with no idea what you're doing. You wanted to be a chef, go to culinary school but...everyone keeps tellin ya it's a stupid idea. Pshh like they had any good ones to begin with. Everyone knows they didn't even bother withto school. But you stayed in town instead of goin west to California like you planned.
New Bern is such a tiny little town. Too big to just walk around and get to places convenient like, too small that Walmart is it's biggest store. There's barely even a strip of a mall to call a mall. You can go there when Wally World doesn't have anything else. Still you guess it's alright. Boring, sure. Inconveniently placed yeah. Filled with old army vets and grannies you bet. But everyone who lives here is dying to get out. You more so than anyone else.
Still your Great Aunt is pretty cool. Back in the day she was a woman pilot, used to fly everywhere. Everyone told her she was crazy too, said she'd never even get off the ground but she laughed at em when she did. For every place she went she brought back somethin. Jewelry, photos, music boxes, wooden figures. It feels wrong that she's back here but whenever you talk about it she shrugs. "It's mah home, Joe. Ya either make a home elsewhere or you go back to one."
You can't argue there. But you can say you want home to be at least a little busier. She laughs and tells you, "Kid, it is busy. Just New Bern busy." [314/500]
