Name: Vasilily Isobel Merit
Gender: Female
Scarf design: Image
A representation of her love of flight, being an aerospace engineer (and a lover of travelling)
Why do they love their scarf?:
Vasilily laughed at the joke her best friend made. Fiorella had been making Vasilily laugh for the last fifteen years of their friendship. The two were still quite young in their lives and were at Starbucks, choosing the location for Fiorella's upcoming wedding.
"I take it Gillon doesn't approve of you going into space before the wedding?" Vasilily asked. She didn't like the idea of her friend doing something so dangerous, but this had been Ella's dream since they were twelve. Who was she to interfere? Although she herself chose to be an aerospace engineer instead of a pilot, she couldn't very well destroy the dreams of her best friend as well.
"What does he ever approve of. You know how safe he is. The trip is next week anyway." Fiorella laughed, her hands going to her owl patterned scarf.
"So, are you going to wear a scarf on your space suit?" Vasilily joked, knowing her friend well enough to believe it possible.
"Sadly scarves adhere to the laws of gravity... and would be a distraction supposedly." Fiorella pouted playfully.
Fiorella's eyes lit up.
"I got you something, just to remember me by when I'm exploring the area around Earth." She explained, bringing out a white box from her purse.
"Aww you're a darling." Vasilily took a sip of her Starbucks iced tea lemonade before opening the box and gasping.
Inside it was a beautiful blue scarf, matching her blue eyes and pale blue hair. The scarf had feathers springing out from a central point, giving the appearance of wings when spread out. It was breathtaking.
Fiorella carefully wrapped the scarf to be around the neck and reached over to position it on Vasilily.
"It's beautiful. Thank you." Vasilily smiled.
"No problem hon, you deserve something as beautiful as you." Fiorella winked in reply.

The next week-
Vasilily and Gillon were of course at the launch. Vasilily took the day off work to see her best friend achieve her lifelong dream. Gillian wanted to make sure his fiancé was alright. They had already hugged and said their goodbyes. Fiorella looked more beautiful than ever in her suit, a giant smile on her face. She was going to space. Her dream was really coming true.
Take off in 10...
Vasilily watched the rocket attentively. She had a sudden bad feeling. She was scared for her friend. Fiorella should just come out right now. Something bad was going to happen. NO!
6...
"Gillon I have a bad feeling. Something bad is going to happen. I'm scared. I'm worried."
"Lily calm down. Ella's got this. She's been training her whole life."
3...
2...
1...
TAKE OFF!
The rocket started slowly going up. It felt like she was in a dream. Her heart lifted with the rocket. Maybe she was wrong. Yes it was all okay. The rocket was already shooting up at a higher speed. Fiorella would be fine, just a few months and-
BOOM!
Vasilily's heart stopped. Her eyes had been on the rocket the whole time. It was steady, moving alright when suddenly it was a cloud of red, orange, then smoke. Her friend was in there. Not just her friend, her best friend. Fiorella was like her sister.
"NO! ELLA!"
She heard a masculine voice shout and turned to see Gillon fall to his knees.
Why did he do that? He'd only known Fiorella half as long as Vasilily did. Fiorella wasn't gone anyway. She couldn't be. She had to have survived. Maybe instead if going to the ship, she had to use the toilet. Fiorella was too young, too full of life, too full of laughter. This couldn't be happening. Her hands went to the scarf around her neck. She'd never forget Fiorella.

Some months later-
This was the third month Vasilily dealt with without Fiorella. Imagine, the mistake of an engineer, just like herself, killed someone. Killed Fiorella. There was an engine problem. And her best friend died because of it. Today was the funeral. Donned in a long black gown, Vasilily grabbed the scarf laid on her bed and wrapped it around her neck. Fiorella wouldn't want her to be bitter. Fiorella would want her to move on and wear a beautiful scarf while doing so.

Fiorella Iris Hester
Beloved daughter, sister, fiancé, and friend
Heaven deserves the sound of your beautiful laughter
The sky was never the limit for you, our angel
1988-2015

Name:
Khione
Gender:
Female
Scarf design:
A soft translucent cloth that has been stylized to look like the pelt of an axis deer. This means that it has a light reddish brown color with a black stripe down the center and many white spots. It was designed to look like many of the other furs that her brother wore and despite its thin material, it can be surprisingly warm.
Why do they love their scarf?:
"Brother! Brother!" A young Khione skidded around the corner, heading straight to the mound of furs that was Avente. "You'll never guess what I got to do today!"
"What did you get to do?" Avente responded coolly, green eyes meeting her blue ones.
"I got to go into the village for the first time!" Khione said happily. "Mom took me out there to learn about making connections, because apparently I need to know how to do that for when I live in a different country. Or at least I think that's what she said. All I remember is that I had lots of fun." She began to babble about her day, nose brushing up against her brother's silken scarf as she curled into him.
~~~~~~~~
A couple years more years found an older but still young Khione hurrying inside the castle, shedding off her outside furs in favor of her thinner inside ones, before heading towards her older brother's room. She couldn't wait to tell him about her day.
"Avente!" She called cheerfully, flopping down onto a section of layered furs. "Guess what happened today!"
"Not now Khione." He said, barely glancing up from the book he was reading. "I'm busy."
"But Brother," She whined back. "I want to talk with you."
"Yes well I'm trying to learn about ruling a kingdom. Surely that is more important than whatever random adventure you experienced today."
Khione huffed at her brother's words. "You're mean." She replied, standing up and purposely stepping on the trailing end of his favorite scarf as she exited the room.
~~~~~~~~
A nearly present day Khione was finally returning from her diplomatic trip and she couldn't wait to tell her brother all about it. Sure she wasn't as close to him as she used to be, but he would definitely want to hear about her adventures in a far away land. She had even brought back a gift for him, one that was unique to the foreign country.
She had planned to head straight to his quarters to give it to him, but before she could, her parents stopped her.
"Khione, why don't you wait to go in there?" Her mother intercepted her only a few feet from the doorway. "Avente is probably busy right now."
"Yes well I doubt he is too busy to see his sister. You know, the one that has been gone for almost six months?" She snapped impatiently. Traveling always left her snappish and since she wasn't the primary diplomat on this trip, all she wanted to do now was talk to her brother than sleep. Was that really so hard for them to understand?
Finally managing to shoulder past them, she entered her brother's room only to immediately notice that something was wrong. There wasn't as many furs as there usually was, and even the ones that were there were scattered out in a way Avente would never use them. Not to mention the burning fire was one that Khione knew to be smaller than normal. Most importantly, however, was the lack of the Viscet that she knew to be the Prince.
"Mother, where's Avente?" She asked, eyes wide as she turned to face her parent.
"About that sweetie," Her mom said awkwardly, eyes refusing to meet hers. "Avente is gone."
"Gone?" She echoed. "What do you mean by gone?"
"Your mother means exactly what she said. Avente isn't here anymore, he hasn't been for the past couple months."
"Where did he go?" Khione questioned.
"We can't tell you that."
Her blue eyes narrowed. "Can't or won't?"
Before they could even reply she cut them off again. "Were you even going to tell me that he was gone?"
"Of course we were sweetheart." Her mother tried to be reassuring but her sweetness just made Khione more frustrated. "We just wanted you to have a few days to settle back in and relax."
"And you really thought that was going to work out for you?" She growled, glaring at them before taking a deep breath. "I'm going to go take a nap. Don't bother me."
The last part sounded almost threatening and while she knew this disrespectful behavior wouldn't slide any other time, this time her parents allowed it. And perhaps that was for the best.
~~~~~~~~~~
Present day Khione sighed, staring back at the kingdom she grew up in as their ship set sail. Her parents were finally marrying her off and a cousin was taking Avente's rightful place on the throne. Not that Avente could have claimed it now.
Her parents never did explain his disappearance to her and neither would any of the servants. The villagers didn't really know much either so she really only knew the most basic of details. In fact her parents hadn't even offered her anything to remember him by, they had started acting like he never even existed.
Still, Khione hadn't wanted to forget and eventually after many obstacles she managed to obtain his favorite scarf- the translucent axis one that was surprisingly warm. Getting it had required several barters with servants and keeping it had involved many arguments with her mother, but in the end Khione won.
And once she did win, she refused to let go of her prize, almost always keeping it looped around her neck. She wasn't going to be like the rest of them, pretending that her brother had never existed. No, Avente deserved to be remembered, even if it was only by a scarf.
Any extras:
Khione stands next to her mother's throne, head bowed as she listens to them discuss a new trade policy. This kingdom was one they had dealt with many times before, and since they could loosely be considered allies, her parents had decided that they would be a good introduction into diplomacy. And they probably would have been, if she had actually been included in the conversation.
Yes, she had figured that going into this as a first time diplomat meant her involvement would be limited, but so far the only time she had talked was during introductions. After that they had dived straight into business, and while Khione had been trained to understand what they were saying, she still somehow managed to become confused.
But she didn't let her confusion be made obvious and kept nodding along until she was certain that nobody was paying any attention to her. It was only then that she allowed her vision to stray from the foreign diplomat and for her mind to zone out of this world. Doing so probably wouldn't have been acceptable had she been a ruling queen, but right now she was still just a young princess in training. One whose attention span had a habit of straying when she was only listening to people make complicated bargains. She was one of those that needed to be included, if only for the sake of keeping her focused.
"Khione." Her mother's voice cut into her thoughts. "What do you think of Mr. Han's proposal?"
Suddenly Khione wished she had paid more attention as she frantically searched her thoughts for any details she may have picked up in the last few minutes. Keeping her panic hidden, she caught a glimpse of her mother's notes and combined with the vague facts in her head she tried to form a logical opinion.
"I personally think that it seems to be a rather decent proposal, appearing to be mutually beneficial for both countries. The trade rate seems to have dropped slightly, but since I recall Mr. Han mentioning some domestic difficulties, I believe that it is rather understandable. Overall I don't see any major flaws, but of course that could just be my opinion."
Khione desperately hoped that the random speech she had just made off the top of her head would suffice her parents' requirements. Especially considering how she had quite obviously avoided including any direct details.
Her mother just hummed though and Khione felt her breath catch before her father, King Reventon decided to speak. "I suppose you are right this time, but please darling, try to pay more attention in the future."
His words made Khione duck her head in an ashamed manner as she mumbled out a apology. "It's fine this time, but one day you might be doing this by yourself, so I suggest you learn now. As for Mr. Han's proposal-"
This time Khione paid more attention as they hammered out the last details of the deal and signed off on all the official paperwork. She watched as the foreign diplomat was escorted off to his guest room before her parents turned to her.
"Typically I would give you a really long lecture on this," Her mother started, as she was the one who had been in charge of the majority of her training. "but today I have decided to be generous. Considering how it was your first time and how we barely included you, I find it understandable that you lost interest. But next time things will be different, so I suggest you learn to pay more attention."
"Yes ma'am." Khione squeaked, still embarrassed that she had been caught zoning out. "I promise it won't happen again."
"Okay then, I suppose you can be dismissed."
The word "dismissed" made Khione perk up and with a quick bow to her parents, she hurried out of the room. Because even if she was certain he would laugh at her, Khione couldn't wait to tell Avente about this experience.
