This is an absolutely AMAZING contest idea, I love how it can actually help endangered species by encouraging people to research them

1. Your species:
Red pandas
2. Conservation status:
Endangered

3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct?:

Red pandas, also knows as lesser pandas due to their small size, are endangered for many reasons; most of which are the result of human activity and behavior.
Poaching is a key issue with red panda endangerment. It's not a surprise that the beautiful pelts of these small mammals catch the human eye, but poaching has impacted the red panda population immensely.
Climate change is also a problem for the well-being of red pandas. To adjust to climate change means changing their lifestyles completely, and many red pandas can't handle this change and die.
Another issue that many endangered species face: Humans moving into their habitat. Many red panda habitats are destroyed or moved into by humans and their herds.

Red Panda Network

4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:
There are several websites we can visit to donate to red panda preservation groups. We can educate others of red pandas, and raise awareness.
A competition like this is a good way to help many species, including red pandas!

1. Your species: Vaquita
2. Conservation status (source please!):
x
Critically endangered!
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!):
same website
The vaquita will be extinct, possibly by 2018, if fishery bycatch is not eliminated immediately. Nearly one out of every five vaquita get entangled and drown in gillnets intended for other marine species like the totoaba, a critically endangered fish also found in the upper Gulf of California. Entanglement in gillnets set for totoaba was the primary cause that brought the vaquita to low levels by the mid-1970s. Totoaba were overfished by the mid-1970s and were listed as endangered by Mexico in 1975, and by the US in 1979.

Today, international trade in totoaba is banned under CITES but high demand from China for its swim bladder has led to a corresponding boom in illegal totoaba fishing in the past few years. Thousands of swim bladders are dried and smuggled out of Mexico, often through the United States. Fishermen receive around $4,000 for each pound of totoaba swim bladder, equivalent to half a year’s income from legal fishing activities. It is this illegal trade that is currently driving the precipitous decline in vaquita numbers.

4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:
In July 2016, President Barack Obama and President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico announced billateral collaboration measures to protect the vaquita. As a follow up to this meeting and to the recommendations CIRVA presented in its latest vaquita report, Mexico's National Institute of Fisheries (INAPESCA) and WWF Mexico established an international committee of experts to further develop and urgently implement vaquita-safe fishing technologies.

The experts committee will advise the Mexican government on improving fishing techniques not harmful to vaquita, including those that INAPESCA and WWF Mexico have together developed over the last years.

This independent committee has been charged with improving existing vaquita-safe fishing technologies (such as the small trawl to catch shrimp and traps and other gear for fish) to substitute gillnets which will be permanently prohibited starting September in the Upper Gulf of California, the only place on Earth where the vaquita exists.

The committee is comprised of experts from Texas A&M University, NOAA South East Fisheries Center, Swedish University of Agriculture Science, Technological University of Denmark, Canada's Fisheries and Marine Institute, New England Aquarium, FAO, INAPESCA and WWF..

A protocol and guidelines to catch shrimp with vaquita-safe technology is expected to be ready soon.

1. Your species: Pangolin
2. Conservation status (source please!): vulnerable to critically endangered depending on species
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!): x x Pangolins fall victim to illegal trafficking more often than most other creatures. They are removed from the wild by the tens of thousands and they are hunted for their meat and scales. Pangolin scales are used in traditional medicine while their meat is considered a delicacy.
4. What can we do/what is being done to help?: Their trade was banned in 2016 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. It is always important to promote wildlife awareness, support organizations dedicated to preservation of species, and to not buy into the pangolin trade.

1. Your species: Chelenoidis nigra & Chelonoidis darwini ; the Galapagos tortoise

2. Conservation status (source please!): Extinct -- critically endangered x // x

3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!): I went to the Galapagos Islands in 2014... by then, the last known individual of the Chelenoidis nigra abingdonii, Lonesome George, had been dead for two years. The Galapagos tortoise is one of the longest-living species in the world, as well as the largest tortoise. Lonesome George was discovered in November 1971 (having been born, by estimation, sometime in 1910 - he lived for over a hundred years). Any mating attempts for George were proved inviable. What made this species so close to extinction (and for some, extinct) was the hunting of them for meat and in more later years for oil by both pirates in the 17th century and whaling ships in the 19th century. Some introduced species have the potential to harm the tortoises' limited habitat of the Galapagos Islands (in Ecuador).
Source: x

4. What can we do/what is being done to help?: What's being done to help by the Galapagos National Park Directorate (GNPD, established in 1968) is to restore the tortoise populations back to historic numbers, evaluate habitat conditions and restore them, survey lesser known tortoise populations, continue to use advances in genetics to refine tortoise conservation, and to improve & expand the GNPD's tortoise centers to ensure healthy animals & the constant support of conservation activities. Already, 206 juvenile Española tortoises have been released onto the Santa Fe island to increase the population of the Santa Fe tortoise. Another species was identified, the Eastern Santa Cruz Tortoise, to bring the known Galapagos tortoise species to 15 (many of which are endangered or on the brink of extinction).

If you want to help, you can donate to the Galapagos Conservancy here. Their full website is here.

kalon #907 [european mink] entry

Postby rustyroxy » Mon Mar 13, 2017 9:34 am

Image

username: rustyroxy
name: kobet
gender: male
number: 36

----------------

your species:
iberian lynx

conservation status:
endangered

why are they endangered?:
their population declined because of sharp declines
in rabbit populations
infrastructures like roads, dams, railways and other human
activities contribute to the loss and fragmentation of the
Iberian lynx distribution area, creating barriers between
the different populations.
major threats include road development, being caught in
traps meant for other animals, and illegal shooting

what is being done to help?:
some measures have been implemented to try and restore
their habitat, and these include maintaining the rabbit population,
lowering unnatural causes of death, and captive breeding of the cats
for release.

wwf is also providing funding for polar bear researchers.
