First, I colored in the base coat I wanted, in this case a flaxen chestnut. Then I duplicated the body layer and colored it a near-white creamy sort of color, and duplicated that layer several times. Then, I made most of these layers hidden, so that there was only one white layer over the base coat. Making sure that lock alpha was off, I took the eraser, and upped the brush's spacing and scattering bars, and shifted the size bar so that the brush size was between 1 and 10. I then went over most of the horse's back, belly, and down to the knee on each leg with the eraser. Once I was happy with how it looked, I made another of the duplicate white layers visible, and started erasing on that one, though not going as far down nor erasing as much as I did on the first white layer. Once I was happy with that one, I made the next white layer visible, started working on that one, so on and so forth for about... 7 or 8 white layers total? At which point I went back through the layers and erased in areas where I wanted the base coat to show more, before taking all the white layers and merging them together, and continuing to touch up the coat in certain areas until I was satisfied with the outcome.

Hope this helps, and if anything was unclear, please don't be afraid to ask for clarification- I'll happily attempt to explain.
