Rescue Event - #5 Apricot Dun Tovero

Postby chemical. » Thu Mar 09, 2017 3:26 pm

This mare is supremely anxious, weaving all about when she's in a stall or otherwise small pen. Her ears flick all ways nervously, and she rarely remains quiet even in the company of others. (credit to hooves! <3)

To get this girl, tell me how you would help her relax.

Answer: Essential oils and aromatherapy; Peony seems to respond well to both when used in a calm, quiet stall away from others. It's still a long road to recovery, but she seems to be doing much better with the help of the calming oils and soothing scents she inhales every morning and evening.

Answer: After some research I'd make a list of things that could be stressing her out. Being in an unfamiliar place would definitely be a cause, but maybe she could be experiencing pain somewhere that we didn't know about such as issues with her eye sight, or maybe her current diet isn't what she needs like lacking nutrients. She might even be lonely because all her friends are no where in sight. Once the list is completed, I'd start to limit and cross off the things that don't apply to her, or are at least things that don't have any effect on her anxiety. So when I finally get my list of causes, I'd begin to provide solutions. If she misses her friends, I'd try to introduce her to some of my other mares in hopes she can make new ones. This would also provide more exercise for the mare and free-space, because she'd be put out in the larger pastures, and maybe she can let out her hot air. Although I'd be supervising to be sure no one gets hurt. If she was having physically problems, I'd check in with the veterinarian and maybe try out some therapy. I recognize that the mare also doesn't have much training, and I would be sure to work with her everyday. She would need to know that I am her friend too, so once we have bonded I would jump into training. But again, have to be careful not to stress her too much because the last thing I want is for her to become more anxious. That also means that I have to be sure that I am comfortable around her, I can't be anxious around her and must keep a calm presence. And maybe all the attention focused on her might freak her out. So I'd try other methods, like placing a radio near her stall to play soft music, since music influences my mood, maybe it will influence hers as well. But maybe the sounds are overwhelming her and that is what causes the anxiety, or just being inside enclosed areas such as a stall. In which case I'd have to make a run-in pasture for her where she can be outside with a friend all the time, and have shelter from the weather. The possibilities are endless but the bottom line is that I'd try to figure out the source of her problem, and then I'd try to help as best I can. Perhaps this is just how she is and there will be no changing her attitude, but my goal would be to create some sort of stability in her life. Something she can depend on to be there and trust. Whether it is another horse, the radio, medication, quiet space, more activity... whatever she needs I'll try to supply it for her.

Answer: Music. Music is the best kind of way to relax anyone. It helps me relax when I'm having an anxiety attack, it helps me focus for school, and it even keeps me pumped at work. I can't stand quiet and no noise. It makes me nervous and I might even go a little crazy. I play a number of different instruments, so perhaps if I played a few melodies for this pretty mare she will learn to calm down too. Music is good for the nervous soul.

Companionship. Artillery Stables is home to numerous ponies. There is one mustang at our stables that is mateless and a little lonesome herself. I'm sure Signa would be glad to have this pretty Starling as her companion. The two could be kept close together and even be kept on the same schedule and by the same handler. Signa will ensure that Starling never has to be alone again.

Wiccan. The owner of Artillery Stables is a wiccan. She can perform a number of different herbal therapies for the horses that stay at her stables. Since the stable specializes in ex-military horses and other rehabilitation types the owner will be able to also prescribe a herbal therapy for this mare. There is no fear of drugs or steroids of any types at Artillery Stables; just the hope of calming scents and relaxing herbal baths. The stable rehabilitates, preserves, and even trains horses of various temperaments, kinks, personalities, genders, and colors. We do not discriminate.

Love. Let's be honest here: I am dying to love on this mare. The second I heard that she would not roll for anyone my heart sank. This lonely kiddo just needs someone to love on her and I would love to love on her myself.

Answer:
Two things have seemed to help Drea. one being having lots of space. Drea is most anxious when in an enclosed space. We opened up her stall into a pen out behind the barn so she can come and go as she pleases and this has made her much more at ease, though she is still working through her problems.
The second thing that has helped Drea is companionship. Large crowds only increase her anxiety, so we let our mare Kalliope into her pen. Kalliope is sweet, gentle, and mild mannered. Her calmness about this gs around her seems to help Drea realize it is okay.

Answer: Calming Lady down took work and some good old trial and error. Being that she'd had so little human interaction, we didn't want to overwhelm her and it was clear that being in a stall or any sort of pen near humans was making things even harder for her. At the same time, we didn't want her to simply continue being afraid of humans. So we compromised by giving her her own pasture some distance from the barns, with just a single older, mellow mare for company. The mare we placed with her was one of our quietest mares, naturally low on the totem pole and not inclined to push her weight around.

Ladybird was given time to adjust to her new surroundings and like most equines, fairly quickly founded a friendship with our mare. We of course would often go out to the pasture to pat and love on Tilly, our mare, making a fuss of touching her and giving her her nightly grain and small snacks. It was a thrilling moment when Lady at last approached us, studying us with caution and allowed us to touch her shoulder gently. This was the moment the real breakthrough came. After this it was just building on this, spending more time around her, fussing over her as well, taking time to acclimate the mare to the daily things she would need to be used to. As Lady grew more comfortable in her world, we began working on confidence building exercises, rewarding her frequently for a job well done. This was a cumulative exercise, each day stacking on the previous day's progress until she confidently approached us in the pasture looking for her attention.

Answer:To help relax Foresight I would calmly stand in, or close to her stall whispering words of calmness, as the bond grows stronger I would take to showing her new things, allowing her to associate some new with something familiar.Another way would be to massage her forehead or just groom her calmly.

Ahh okay, this was incredibly hard for me to judge; I loved reading all the entries for this girl. I really was drawn to this entry for whatever reason however, so congrats!
