Elias used to go under the name of Croatoan, during a time where the land still belonged to the natives and even then, when the first settlers arrived on the new continent. He was the youngest of three brothers, spirits sent down to earth in order to protect the great native American tribes. Each of them did chose a form of a mortal being, so they could walk amongst humans and animals: The eldest took the form of a bear, the second of a wolf and the youngest, Elias/Croatoan, a viscet. It was Croatoan's first visit to the world of the mortals, as he had just come of age, and he was surprised and excited by the fact, how different this world was, compared to the world of spirits, where he came from.
The three brothers were assigned to a certain territory that they had to watch over. They were supposed to roam around, watch for signs of intruders and scare them away, if neccessary, but still keep hidden. Croatoan, of course, had other things in mind than to stay hidden. Soon, he befriended the young son of a tribe's chief, whose name was Lootah. Lootah, just as adventurous and reckless as Croatoan, showed the Viscet the land, the sea and the forest, and they became an inseperable team, caring for the safety of Lootah's people and their home.
Near to the tribe's homeland, some settlers set food and founded a colony called Roanoke. First, the Natives and the European settlers did get along well - the Natives shared with them what they had and the settlers told them stories about where they came from. But Croatoan didn't trust the pilgrims from the start, and he would be right - soon the Natives had to realise, that the settlers were after their fertile ground and planned to chase them away from their lands. The natives, backed up by Croatoan, refused and the settlers took hostage of Lootah.
The natives planned war, but Croatoan had other ideas - he wanted to save Lootah on his own. On silent paws he tried to enter the colony, but there were too many man guarding the hut in which they held Lootah, so Croatoan tried to scare them. He would stroll around the colony, speaking through the wind in his native tongue, hissing and growling at the settlers from behind the trees. Soon, he had so much fun in doing that, that he actually forgot what he came for in the first place - saving the chief's son. While the Native tribe was planning war, Croatoan hunted down a stag, after leaving some dead mice and bunnies at the borders of the colony. The settlers were on alert now, rumours of a demon had started to spread. The fur of the stag he put over his own, his paws and muzzle he bathed in blood. Then he put the head of the stag over his own and waited for the night to arrive.
First, he creeped around the borders, keeping hidden in the dark, making noises and whispering to the settlers in order to scare and alert them. He did this for hours, laughing and giggling, having the fun of his life and having already forgotten that he actually was on the mission to safe Lootah. Being sick of just creeping, he sneaked into the colony, encraving his name into the bark of a tree and then randomly appeared right between the settlers when they were enjoying one last feast, before finally heading to bed. And he spoke to them, the wind, his father, translating the whispers: "You have angered the old gods and therefore you shall be punished! You will be banned from this land until all eternity!" Snickering and giggling, he casted an old spell, that he had once learned from one of his bigger brothers. He actually only wanted to scare the settlers - how could he have known, that the spell would actually work?
And suddenly, they were all gone. The whole colony was as silent as a graveyard but even more empty. He flickered his ears in surprise, then started laughing. For him, this was all still a game and he could not care less what had happened to the settlers - they were a threat to the tribe he was responsible for anyway. Still enjoying the fact, that he had managed to let a whole colony disappear, he sat down and munched on some of the food - apples and some meat, before leaving the camp, still without thinking about the chief's son, who disappeared together with all the European settlers. He was already on his way further north, when he heard the wind whisper about a forbidden spell, that had been cast. Having forgotten, that he engraved his name into a tree, he thought that he was save. Nobody would ever know.
