Typewriting

Carefully unknotting and sliding the sleek tie off my sore neck. The constant complaining of a crick, the flattening of my fur in a sharp edged shape, only lived to remind me of my mundane living-day-to-day office life. Giving pointless presentations of even more pointless products, blistering my paw pads on faded keyboard keys making spreadsheets and typing back-and-forth emails. Drudging inside, easing myself into my personal squeaky wheeled desk chair, letting my ailments bleed out and be forgotten with the overwhelming scent of sodden ink dominating my thoughts.

It smelled horrible, like a pen factory incident gone wrong. The rusting, peeling sides didn't even attempt at hiding its age. Yet, it was home. A simple 1930s Urania typewriter passed down to me not through tradition, more like me being the only one who was interested in the outdated instrument before my grandmother tried putting it up for sale a yard sale for much less than it's actual worth. While it seemed like an off-shoot of my dreaded job, something about it seperated it as its own entity, relaxing me as I pressed down on that first key.

Each selected letter required more force than a modern computer keyboard demanded, the letters themselves bearing some resemblance to the familiar QWERTY arrangement with the Y and Z switched around for whatever reason. Zoning out the clicking and clacking, finding myself hypnotically writing whatever my thoughts felt was important. Somedays it'd be stories of princesses, dragons, and epic adventures, other days it was gritty realistic fiction, along with the occasional absentminded echoing of a muffin recipe.

Should my cat not interrupt my obsessive nightly sessions, I'd be going until the sun came back up. Perhaps it's for the best, as good things can only stay that way in sacrificing moderation.

Through the mesh he spots his opponent, a taller man clad in a matching white garb. There's a mutual understanding
between them that this bout would determine the winner. Preston lifts his epee in a salute first to his opponent, then
to the director of the match, and finally to the audience that is silenced with anticipation. When he turns back to his
partner he finds the man already deep within an en garde position with the tip of his blade at eye-level to him. The
director calls out in a strong voice.

"En garde. Ready? Fence!" Immediately he tilts onto the tips of his toes, bouncing about the strip with a surprising
amount of speed. At once their blades touch in a sharp clash; their tips sliding past without gain as each fencer deftly
blocks an advance towards themselves. For a moment Preston struggles to keep his weapon steady-- the other man's
brawn is almost overpowering. After a minute of close combat between them he throws himself towards his end of the
strip without moving his eyes off the other. In the back of his mind he recalls to keep his movements powerful. It must
be as if he is trying to force the ground apart beneath him as he moves.

The bout rages on. They exchange a flurry of touches before another meeting of their weapons commences, the crowd
gasping as they lean in, and Preston delivers a perfect parry before sliding in for the touch. He feels the tip snag on a
wrinkle in his vest then a buzzing meets his ears. Green glows faintly from the time box in the corner of his eye. A bead
of sweat rolls down his cheek. As he removes his mask he tosses a victorious fist into the air.
