"This mare showed up at the auction house caked in a thick layer of mud. We assume she was a general neglect case, left out in the middle of a pasture with little human interaction or care. She has a very skittish personality so it was very hard to get her cleaned up back at the facility, but once we did we realized she had a few more problems than expected. All four feet had severe infections, and while the back ones were easy to medicate, her front hooves were already horribly malformed. We had our farrier smith custom shoes to align the hooves properly so she could walk pain free, but this is an expense that will likely need to be continued for the rest of her life. The worse of the issues of course was her tail, which she held limply the entire trip despite her constant anxiety. Usually when threatened a Walker will use its tail as a defense, keeping it poised and using it as a sort of whip to keep predators away, so we knew there was an issue when she didnt try to use it even when absolutely terrified. Once everything was groomed up and visible our vet spotted the problem pretty quickly - another awful infection, likely from a fence injury, set all the way to the bone. Part of her tail had to be amputated to remove the already dead flesh. With both her main defense mechanism gone and her hooves too uncomfortable to kick properly, she has picked up an awful biting habit when spooked. We are fairly certain that once she has a chance to calm down and find trust in her human, this habit should die out - but it is also just as likely that she will revert to biting or nipping anytime an issue arises."
