RVEC #156 - Chestnut Thoroughbred

Postby SydneyandStorm » Sun Feb 19, 2017 11:36 am

Sweet little chestnut for our hunters week!

To win this boy, show me a picture of the bridle and saddle you would choose to ride him in. Best match wins! I'll be judging this on February 21st.

Other:Found a super cute training pad!

      - The Micklem is one of my favorite bridles, which I've been practically stalking since its inception. I love how it's anatomically designed; priority given for the horse's comfort and not just following tradition or fashion trends. While being labeled as 'unconventional', it is not illegal in hunter classes. This version of the bridle - the Micklem Deluxe Competition Bridle - has a raised brow and broader noseband both featuring fancy stitching for the classic hunter look. For his beautiful chestnut coloring, I chose the brown bridle for a more subtle color scheme.

      - The saddle was a harder choice as I've never been particular in what I ride in, as long as I'm riding cx. When price isn't a limitation and as it is fantastical - why not go for the best brands and not just best for the bargain. I ended up doing a bit of research for saddlers that fellow hunter/jumpers found quality in. Everyone's advice fell into the category of Choose what fits and feels the most comfortable on the horse, what fits and feels best for your butt/legs, and have it customized to fit exact - flocking removed/added, knee/leg rolls added/removed. Well that just opened the flood gates on google image tabs. In the end, I stopped following brand names and focused a bit more on styles that appealed to me. Without having actually sat in the millions of saddles available - I honestly couldn't pick the 'best'. I reflected on my own personal riding style and habits - opting for a shallow/flatter seat to help me stay out of the tack, a low cantle to encourage free movement without holding my seat in, and a forward placed short saddle flap for my short stature and equitation. It was a toss up between a CWD, this Antares, and a Devoucoux - color won out (it was closer to the bridle coloration :) .

      - His name was almost Hunky Dory

Congrats, OutFoxed! I loved how the colors matched and how you went out of your way to make sure the Micklem was approved for hunters so you could give extra thought to his comfort in the show ring <3 This was a tough decision, though!
