What does love mean to them --
Houston never experienced real love. He was raised by a street merchant who found him in a gutter as a small kalon and was viewed mostly as a worker that his foster parent did not have to pay. At the age of 15, Houston ran away from his home in a rundown shack just outside the city limits. He never really possessed a name, so when others asked him for it he replied with where he was from, and this became what he was known by eventually.

When it came to romantic relationships, Houston was never quite sure how to begin. Any kalon that showed interest in him initially usually gave up after they grew tired of his constant need for reassurance. Houston began to think that he was unlovable. His foster parent hadn’t loved him his whole life, so why would it seem possible that anyone else could?

Eventually, after many failed relationships, Houston had started to piece together what love might really be like. He had felt happiest when he made his partner laugh, like he brought them if only a moment of happiness. Watching the sunset with another being was far more magical than watching it alone. Sharing your food with someone who genuinely appreciated it didn’t feel like he was losing anything. Talking to someone who will talk back and not just pass you by on the street made him feel as if he wasn’t truly alone in the world. Houston was slowly figuring it all out. Maybe love wasn’t doting on your every need or professing undying adoration at every minute of that day. Maybe it was just existing in the same space as someone, even if it was just for a little while, and forgetting that the world is still going on all around you.

In the words of Gavin...

When i was a child, i took love for granted. I believe anyone and everyone had it or gave it.
Nothing in my mind ever believed it was earned or something one could live without.
My parent were caring, selfless people who were love in the form of living beings.
I would do bad things, say terrible things. And somehow, they could forgive and love me still.
I look back at my actions then and want to smack my younger version's head.
What a fool i was! To think that those people were ok with that!
I really had it all, a good home, a future.
But, all good things come to an end. What i never took notice of finally came to light.
My parents, for years, suffered money problems and had borrowed alot of it from an untrustworthy source.
Because of this, the source went out to "collect".
A devastating realization that what was perfect and happy was false hit Gavin hard.
He realized how much his parents tried to take care of their son and bring him up with all the love they could give.
Why they didn't tell him didn't matter; he knew why in his heart.
From that day on, he walked in their shoes when it came to be selfless and caring, but aware of what he can do.
He did end up paying off his parents debts and along the way find more about them. Their struggles had soften him and see the world in a new light. Their love, was the best thing they gave him.

no, to me, it means much more than that. love means that you care for someone
other than yourself. it means that when someone is upset, you try your hardest to
make them smile again. it's whenever somebody is sick and you care for them. it's
when someone you know, or a complete stranger asks you for help and you give it to
them. or, it could be you seeing someone in need of a hand and you run over to them
willingly. to me, love is all aspects of life. that's what love means to me.
