xodeep in the forest where the shadows play, a young kalon lets loose a hiccup of laughter as she chases after the fireflies that illuminate the dark world around her. a particularly bright firefly caught her attention and she wasted no time bounding after it. her pursuit was cut short when she stumbled upon a lake that seemed to be calling out to her with it's odd faint glow. peering closer, she saw a lone koi fish swimming about.
xosuddenly, a tall menacing figure emerged from the shadows across the lake and began to reach out with it's long claws towards the koi fish. it was quite clear to her that the shadow monster was anything but friendly. a rush of adrenaline urged her forwards and before she knew what she was doing, she had yelled, "hey! look over here!" the shadow monster's attention may have been diverted to her, but she began to panic as she didn't know what to do next. her frantic thinking was only eased when she noticed a firefly bumbling by, and then another, and then another until all of a sudden, there was a gigantic swarm behind her surging towards the shadow monster. pained by the brightness of the fireflies ( and her handy dandy flashlight ), the monster fled and the young kalon could do nothing but watch in awe.
xothen, the water in the lake began to ripple and a flash of blinding light forced her to divert her gaze. when she turned back, the koi fish was gone and a fairy hovered above the water. with a gentle voice, it spoke, "you helped save me from that evil spirit that had kept me trapped in that lake for decades. for that, i am forever thankful. please, take these markings on as a token of your bravery." and with that, a warm tingling feeling spread through her body and when she looked down, she saw the beautiful koi fish that now glided gracefully down her side and the koi fish shine that now rested on her tail. with a smile as big as the sun, she turned to thank the fairy for the wonderous gift only to find herself alone. from that day forward, she looks at her markings for strength and to remind her to be brave.

prompt, a young kalon was playing with the koi fish in the pond in his backyard, a grumpy frown planted on his face.
"you know, you're special to me." his mother cooed, nuzzling his ear in affection, joining him at the pond.
"but i'm not special to the other kits, i want for acceptance, is that so hard to ask for?" he asked her, looking at her with wide tear-filled eyes.
his mother only sighed, "oh darling, don't ever look for acceptance from others. look at your pelt, look at your tail shine. what do you see?" she asked, a smile brightening her features.
phaeton huffed, there was no need to look at his pelt or shine, "there are fish on my pelt. there's nothing special about it, fish are gross creatures who don't think." he stopped speaking suddenly, snapping his head away from her.
his mother crouching down and looked him in the eye. "phaeton serafiem marinos! don't you understand, fish are not dumb animals!" she scolded, twitching her long feathery tail, "don't you see, we are descendants of aphrodite and eros themselves! the two of them transformed into fish to escape the clutches of the nighty typhoon, the monster with the strength of an olympian! we are descendants of pisces themselves, gods! and descendants of gods don't look for acceptance from anyone, why? because we don't need acceptance, we're already full of acceptance and pride for ourselves." she finished proudly, puffing out her chest.
the story she was telling wasn't a lie. the marinos family had been rumored to be descendants of greek gods, one could trace back far enough. phaeton was captivated by this story, and it never failed to make him puff out his chest in his now swelling pride. "we have pride and love for ourselves." he chimed in, whisking his tail over his paws.
his mother smiled down at him fondly, glad that he had realized the importance his appearance had given him. "trust me little one, you already look special, but let's show those mean kits why you're really special." she prompted, guiding her kit away from the pond and inside of the house.
his mother used to fill him up with pride about being descendants from gods, telling him his markings were bestowed on him by pisces themselves. so he grew up friendless prideful of his heritage and what they stood for.

one second was all it took. a quick tug of his tail by the choppy current and dwynwen fell under. a young kit he was, unable to swim with confidence, dwyn gave himself to the currents, allowing himself to be thrashed around by the unforgiving tides. his mother always told him not to go so far out in this area, though his inner curiosity gave way. he opened his eyes, the salt water stinging, and watched as the last few bubbles of the oxygen in his lungs exit. soon enough, his eyes slid shut and he sighed one last time. he had given himself to the tides.
"no." he whispered, eyes wide and full of fear. the pool was small; the right size for small children and kits. it was halfway-filled, and yet dwynwen refused to step foot into it. his psychologist - a nice young kal - gave him a pitying look. it seemed he also knew about his mother's death in the water, though he had never told him. "it's evil, it is." he mumbled, shuffling back slowly. his psychologist shook his head, whether in resignment or in pity. dwyn was sick of those looks; they meant he had failed. he was weak. his tail flicked to the left, then to the right, he looked up at the clear blue sky and back to the pool. a paw - his paw - stepped forward, towards the baby pool. he took tentative steps towards it, tail quivering all the while. he stepped up to it, and looked into the water-filled vessel. his terrified face stared back at him, rippled by the water. he dipped a paw in, just below the surface, but stole it back quickly, as if he were burnt. his psychologist stood back, where dwynwen couldn't see him, and smiled.
"you have a choice," his psychologist stated, looking up at dywnwen from his spot down at the edge of the pool. "you can conquer this fear; let the water know it won't hurt you anymore, or you can let it take you under it's tides, hurting you and suffocating you for the rest of your life." dwynwen looked down, then up again. his tail was braided this time; loose hair was the reason for his previous experiences. he took a big breath, and looked down at the water below him.
he dived.

A drop of gold, a puddle of red.
Your family is in trouble young one, what will you do?
Hide, cry like the measly wimp you are..
Or face the danger tooth and claw.. not running anymore?
Kai woke up that morning in pain. His left shoulder blazing like a fire. A pool of crimson and gold sat shimmering on the cool table rocks. Looking out over the floating islands... the bright sun casting long shadows over cascading waters. But for Kai, this was his nightmare . His shoulder could barely hold weight, which was found out quite quickly when he collapsed back into the dirt. He was always a Half. Hunted for his golden blood. But every drop lost... he was dying. Taking a deep breath of the cool, spring air, Kai tried to raise himself again, this time with minimal discomfort. If he could just reach.... His paws began moving, his body warming up from the week of slumber. His body shut down every four weeks, and in his time of rest the Hunters must have come and shot him, hoping he would die so they could come back, take his golden pure blood, and escape. Only they would be heard of years later... once they where immortal.
Kai took striding steps, keeping his damaged shoulder from moving by raising his paw. Soon, the fountain was within his eyes, but right before he could reach the pool. swish... click... thud An arrow, quiet as the fresh snow that falls each year hit Kai right in the tail. Letting out a loud cry in agony, and falling to the ground, he began crawling, faster towards the pool. Paws and shoulders. Click... click... swish! Another arrow, in his side. Again, a cry but he kept moving. It was too late.... right before he could reach the cool waters of the pool, the final arrow struck. His golden pure blood spreading out in a flower-like form around his dying body, and with a last push, Kai sent his half dead body into the waters. fwish... crackle.. snap The hunters where apon the blood in an instant, lapping up the nectar sweetness before it was gone.
Kai's head stung... his whole body stung. The last thing he remembered was the cool water wrapping around him, caressing his body in sweet strokes only a mother could give. He lay in the remnants of what looked like melted gold, and it all came back in a rush. Crying out, he stood on shaky legs and looked down.. the print of a koi.. fresh from his blood. The golden blood that had flowed from his body. Looking back.. there lay no holes from arrows.. His tail, a bright crystalline jewel forced into the hole the arrow had left.. Koi. His markings, as pure as the blood his body no longer held... Koi. Staring at the ground.. Kai began to question.
Is it all real..
Is it all a dream?
Cause I don't feel like I'm living..
In the sweet, summer breeze.

Hwatu looked up from her game of cards as a young woman emerged from the shallow waters of the river outside their home. There was a basket clutched tightly between her jaws and she heaved it down onto the ground in one quick motion, the handful of fish inside still flopping around as they gasped desperately for air within the woven grass container.
"Eomma! You're back!" the small girl cried out, standing up quickly from where she sat in front of a small window. She practically flew out of the door of their small home, running down the steps to crash into her mother's legs as she pulled her into a tight hug.
"Oh Hwatu," her mother began, her eyes full of exhaustion, "look at our catch today! It's so big that we'll have food for the rest of the month." She bent over and began to pull the fish out of the basket, walking over to their smokehouse and hanging them inside to keep them preserved.
In the days after they had finished smoking the fish, Hwatu began to notice that the rain was stronger than usual. It wasn't long until the river had swollen up so high that it consumed all of her mother's efforts. Her mother's eyes began to seem tired without the fish to stop the growing hunger in her belly, and Hwatu became saddened by her mother's deteriorating condition. Fishing was nearly impossible with the dangerous flood, yet her mother went out anyways in the hope that she'd catch even a single fish; instead she collapsed one night, her body consumed from the work.
"It's okay, eomma. I'll take care of you," Hwatu whispered softly into her ear, wiping her mother's tears away with one hand as she hugged the woman tightly. "Please don't worry." Moving the hair out of her eyes, she planted a gentle kiss onto her forehead before sitting on the floor beside her.
The next morning the young girl ran into the floodwater with a basket, determined to catch enough fish so her mother could rest and heal. It was higher than her head and the current was strong, but she looked to the fish on her pelt for guidance as she prayed to the gods for strength. If her mother worked so hard for her, Hwatu would work hard for her mother, too. She had the fish swimming with her.

june 7th 2008, new york city evening.
the smoke evaporated into the wind, his lungs let out pleading coughs. eli let his cigarette rest between his lips as he fixed his hair.
blood from his nosebleed dripped onto his paws. police sirens rung in his ears. opening his door and stepping onto the porch, red and blue lights flashed around the street and eli watched screaming kalons holding their skateboards arguing with some cops.
eli knew these kalons, pretty well actually. he wouldn't consider them friends, but jerks. although he hung out with them anyways. his nosebleed was getting worse so he pulled out a tissue from his pocket. "hey, eli!" one of the kalons called out to him, words slurred but with seemingly friendly undertones. no reply from eli though, who walked back into his house feeling guilty. this was such a recurring thing that happened every weekend, the first times, eli could sympathize. but now, how could he?
"stupid jerks..." he muttered between clenched teeth, pulling down on his white t-shirt now covered in blood from his nosebleed.
june 8th 2008, nyc morning.
thank god, the nosebleed, and the sirens had stopped. light from the sunrise shone through eli's blinds waking him up on the couch. a frantic knocking at the door woke him as well. with an odd feeling of knowing who was at the door, eli walked over to answer.
"hey eli, sorry we did that again we just-- are you okay?" the kalon at the door was one of the kals from last night, now currently staring at eli's blood-stained shirt. "yeah. nosebleed. you should know by now, it's normal and happens all the time."
"anyways, we got you this." a necklace, resembling a koi fish with a hook through it's mouth. "we feel really bad... and you're our friend so we wanted to make up for it... maybe. this might be nice, because you've got such pretty koi markings..." eli started to loose focus trying to let everything sink in.
were they really telling him nice things?
now.
eli is able to understand kalons very well, once blind, now with a metaphorical third eye.
he realizes the kalons on the street were never really jerks, just prone to dumb actions. the necklace is a reminder of that, and though he doesn't wear it often, his markings and shine help him remember too. [400/400]

"They say there are other fish in the sea, but honestly, you're the only one for me."
Jisho woke up with a heaving chest and wide eyes. He looked around his dark room and knew what he had to do. He had to run. He could supposedly see the future and it didn't look good. He quickly stood up after stumbling, his vision blurring slightly with tears. He bit his lip and glanced around as millions of thoughts ran through his head. What would he bring? He honestly didn't know.
The young Kalon grabbed his bag and an empty fish bowl. He had to save his friend. He opened his door and made sure his father was asleep before running down the stairs, being careful not to shatter the bowl. He didn't even bother his jacket as his tail curled around himself. He ran into the forest and to the location where his friend was. Reaching the spot, Jisho sat down and watched his little friend swim. As soon as his friend noticed him, he came over.
Jisho reached out and stuck his hand in the pond where the fish nudged it, causing Jisho to smile. He scooped his friend up in the bowl and let out a giggle. Unable to speak to the fish, Jisho just gave it a kiss, although it was just against the glass bowl. Jisho knew his father wouldn't let him keep his friend after the incident with his other fish, but it wasn't his fault that he died. He nuzzled the bowl and sat down again, sprinkling some fish food in there. He looked into the pond and sighed. He reached in and grasped some pebbles, carefully putting them in, not wanting to hit him.
He stood up and looked around, making his way back to his house. Somehow he knew that his friend wouldn't be safe there, but he felt bad for taking him away from his home. He just hoped that his father was still sleeping. Jisho snuck back inside after slowly opening the door. He then made his way back upstairs and bit his lip once more. He set the fish bowl back on his dresser and kissed it once again.
How could you have friends if you're mute?

A coat is a coat, but mine is different. I have a story behind this coat. It's not a story to tell others.
I am alone at my pond with my friends the koi fish. A theft stole my favorite one during the night. A horrible crime to on for my friends. I feed them all swiftly the ran home to grab anything I need to capture the kidnapper.
A bush near the pond will be my home for the night. Traps were set up to capture the their. Net falling from trees set off by tripwires were my personal favorite. By the time I was done it was night time. Time in the bush went by slowly. It was a bird who stole the koi.

Did you know? Koi fish is a symbol for love. Ironically, It didn't seem to pair well with the fact that most
koi outlive their owners due to their long lifespan.
It seemed to be some cruel joke life had played on Hanae. Sadness gnawed at the corners of Hanae’s
heart. The sky was stained a soft grey, accompanied with the slow patter of rain. She closed her eyes and
tried to imagine her father the day before he left. A golden badge in the shape of a koi fish hung from his
shoulder. The koi represented her and her mother. Her told her stories of how he met Hanae’s mother. He talked
of her as if she were the deep blue waves of the ocean, in his eyes, she was beautiful. Hanae’s mother
seemed to hold the ocean in her eyes.
“You are exactly like your mother, strong like the sea,” he smiled at her. For once, he looked clean.
His long hair was brushed back and tied into a long ponytail. Her father was also covered in armor from head
to toe. Hanae clutched her father’s arm, the golden koi badge dug into her palm. Her older brother was the
first to be selected to fight when the war was just brooding, but now the army was getting desperate, the
enemy was taking over. Hanae’s father's decision to fight was his last bid to save Hanae; to ensure she lived
a safe and happy life. But how was she supposed to be happy when she had no one left? Her father's last
words to her was a promise, a promise to return. For the first few months, she received letters. Letters made
out of delicate papyrus filled with words of love. But then as the bloodshed of the war increased, the letters
stopped coming. Hanae refused to believe it, she kept her hopes high despite the sinking feeling digging in
her gut. Her worst fears were confirmed when a young soldier appeared at her door. They exchanged sad smiles
before the soldier handed her a wrapped package and left without a word. Everything inside of her seemed to
break, she never opened the package. The package remained unopened until now. Inside sat a small golden
badge, in the shape of a koi fish.
The rain seemed to stop, her father had kept his promise all along.

When Koi was a little girl she always loved to paint. Koi would often times blindly throw paint at things and then turn the splattered design into a beautiful image of a animal in a pretty scenery. Koi's grandmother raised her from birth due to complications during the kalons birth. Koi has never met her mother but instead believes her grandmother Juneip is her mother because of this the two are inseparable. Juneip was never very creative but after Koi begged her for three years to create a painting with her Juneip finally agreed. The two spent three hours on a beautiful orange and green giant painting, as Koi went to clean up she watched in terror as Juneip collapsed.......as Koi cried for Juneip to wake her young heart broke. She watched as Juneip was taken away and never to be seen again...later that day still with paint all over her fur she walked into the bathroom and noticed her white fur had been stained and looked like a beautiful painting of Koi fish all over her body.....her heart warmed as she realized Juneip had created a masterpiece on her fur. The thought of always getting to see Juneip's first and last piece anytime she wanted warmed her broken heart. Koi noticing the blank space on her tail near her blob of a shine grinned at the ideal of getting to help Juneip finish her master piece; grabbing some orange paint she gently painted over her tail shine and turned it into a Koi fish, finishing her grandmother's design. Happy and in love with her new fur coat Koi then let the paint fully dry on her fur permintly staining Koi's fur to the design her grandmother had unintentionally made. Koi now wears a pearl necklace with her grandmother's name twisted in wire around her neck with her grandmother's gemstone on the wire as her grandmother's signature to her artwork.
