Reagan Hart is not an underdog.
For the purpose of story-telling, I wish that I could tell you he was. He fits the criteria, after all:
☑ Lost vision in fire
☑ Lost house in fire
☑ Lost
years of work in fire
☑ Occasionally listens to Nickelback
Well, perhaps the last one is a stretch, but you get my point: Reagan Hart's life has the making of a true tear-jerker tale. One that would land right around
Castaway, if I had to guess. However, if I were to compare him to Tom Hanks' lovable but highly unfortunate character, I would be lying.
The fact of the matter is, Reagan Hart is an author. And, as you well know, an author can never be an underdog- there is far too little time for that sort of nonsense. An author simply
is, and so Reagan simply
is.But, luckily, I'm not here to talk about Reagan's misfortunes. No- there are far better things to discuss with you today. Rather, I will be talking with you about Reagan's peculiarities. Or, in other words...the things that make his story worth telling.
Chapter OneYes, dear friends, Reagan's story will be told in chapters. What more could you expect from an up and coming author?
(And trust me, there are far worse ways to tell a story! But I digress-)
Reagan was the mere age of 20 when his life succumbed to flame. It was an electrical fire, according to police, though the locals were quick to make assumptions of....different....sorts. But that is for another chapter. In fact, now that I think of it, we might as well put the fire off, as well. It's rather unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
So, let's try this again:
Reagan was the mere age of 1 when he first entered into the world.
No, no-- that's too far back, and also quite unimportant. One more try:
Reagan was the mere age of 8 when he entered into the 3rd grade. Ahh yes, much better. Now, why is this important? Wonderful question, thank you for asking! 3rd grade is important for one reason: it was the year that Reagan met me. Now, before you go and accuse me of being self-centered, let me ask you this: if I, Jordan Breaks, am single-handedly responsible for a) the moments leading up to the fire, b) the fire, and c) the years he will continue to live after the fire, then isn't it only fair that I be the star of this story? No? Fine, have it your way. Since you all seem to be dying to hear about this fire, I'll tell you. But be warned: I have very few lines (and let's be honest, my lines are
always the best.)

[I really would love to write more, but I'm afraid I can't fit it all into the 600-word limit. Here's a sort of explanation for the story: I've been envisioning Reagan as a writer, and I know that (should I win) I would love for him to be a sort of "second mate" in Jordan's space pirate crew. However, I've been struggling to find the right words for this competition. So, I decided to tell it from Jordan's perspective, as she's his best friend. I know it's not conventional, but it really sounded like a fun and cute idea to me. Again, I really wish I could write more- I had a blast with what I wrote so far, and would like to continue writing/developing this story should I win. Thanks so much for the opportunity!]
