β†’ Opia's city garden was not a completely silent place, the sounds of the road still bled in, though severely dampened by the greenery and the building out in front of the garden. However crying? Very loud crying? That was not normal. Opia peeked out her backdoor, she had been sorting out her room when she had heard crying slowly move from out front, down the path, and into the yard. Quietly padding around she followed the sound to it's source.
β†’ He was a young thing, probably not to double digits yet but close shown by the thinning baby fat on him. He was sobbing openly with big blobby tears and snot running down his face, however between sobs he seemed to be stuffing his face with something. Upon creeping forward to get a better look Opia realized he had dug into her blackberry crop. Her tail shot out and she stiffened, she needed those! She was set to trade a pie with the lady down the street for new paint brushes. Flapping her hands and high-stepping rapidly she took off back for the house, barely alerting the kit who was too engaged in his spiral of despair to hear.

β†’ She went back to her room and rifled around till she found what she needed, speeding back down the stairs she nabbed a washcloth on the way out and made her way back to the kit. Tapping him on the shoulder he jolted and whipped around to be met by a cute blackberry plush being held up in front of Opia's face. Confused into silence he just hiccuped and stared at her, head slowly tilting. One paw keeping the plush to her face somewhat, she reached over and wiped the stunned kit's paws and face off. Slowly revealing herself, she offered the plush to him. He sniffed and gently took it, staring up at Opia. A weird mutual feeling of neither one wanting to spook the other away filled the atmosphere. Finally Opia waved gently and the kit slowly returned the gesture.

β†’ Opia was pretty lost on what to do, it had been a week since the kit had shown up and he was still sleeping on her couch. She didn't know his name and she didn't think he knew hers, she had tried to take him to the police station to find his family but he refused to leave the garden and she wasn't going to try to haul him out. She didn't mind him or anything, right now he was mumbling to the blackberry plush in the middle of the yard, he was plucking weeds and telling the plush all about it, she was glad that he seemed to know what was and wasn't a weed. The timer on the stove rang and his ears pricked, she strained the pasta and whistled and he tottered in. She removed the strainer and turned the sink on, he looked at her confused while she set up the noodles, she turned and rubbed her paws and he exclaimed with an "Oh!" and started to wash his hands.

β†’After dinner they sat at the table and he looked like he wanted to finally start asking things, fussing with his paws and whispering with the plush. Finally he spoke up, "can you talk?" Opia blinked a few times, she couldn't help but burst out laughing.
After calming down she spoke with a voice soft yet rough from disuse, "yeah I can talk, I just would rather not." The kit nodded fiercely like he understood quite well. "What's your name?" Opia asked, though it was a question that was a few days too late.
The kit wrinkled his nose up, "I don' know, I got called a lot of thins, none of 'em very good," he rocked back so his back hit the back of the chair, "a lot of the time I was jus' "the purple one" or "the wimp" or "the crybaby" or "the weakes' one"" he had put his hands on his hips and made disapproving gestures with each name but also started tearing up slightly as he went.
"Rubus," Opia interrupted, "how about you go by Rubus from now on, and stay here where there aren't bad names." Sniffling slightly, Rubus nodded and Opia wondered how fast she could get that spare bedroom ready.
