Why do they submit?:
When they were a pup, they grew up learning to give respect and space to their siblings and parents as they were always the smallest of the bunch. Even after he was separated from them and started his own life, he avoided conflict as much as he could. He would always wait for the other strays to pick the trash clean and then grab what he could causing him to get awfully thin. Thankfully a friendly neighbor would toss him food every now and then which kept him going until he was picked up by the shelter staff.

Why are they so aggressive: Back when she was part of a stray dog pack, Hippolyta had to claw her way up the pecking order slowly but surely. The competition for a high ranking was fierce. Being the top dog meant that all other dogs were inferior to you - you got first priority over everyone else when it came to things like food and shelter. You had the final say in every decision, things would go your way and if anybody were to argue they'd have to get through you and your obedient packmates first. As much power as you had as an alpha, show any weakness at all and somebody would be bound to exploit it and take that power away from you. She would be right where she started - rock bottom. The high stakes and ruthlessness that came with the job description has toughened her up quite a bit. Once she secured her place as the alpha, force and fear became her only weapons to keep her unruly and wild packmates in line. She's so used to relying on her aggression as a means of control that the trait has stuck with her, and it'll take time for it to be tempered down.
