The day we officially met Toby, he was a nervous wreck. He was cautious, but quite curious about us. I had spotted him about two weeks prior, thin and a bit beat up posted from being pushed away from his mother and then out of his herd when a new stallion took over. The only thing that was protecting him was gone. Without really knowing how to survive, I monitored him. With winter quickly approaching and Toby not gaining weight, we had to act. We quickly set up a rescue party and set to tranquilize him so that we could safely transport him back to our facility. Once we got a light tranquilizer in him and he started getting drowsy, we loaded him into a trailer. We only had a short time before he would be back to his full strength so we hurried him back to the barn. We got him settled into a large stall with an attached pasture. We let him wake up before we gave him food and water. He started eating soon after walking up, which was a relief for us. During the next week we kept him quarantined from the other horses to be sure that he didn't have any dangerous illnesses. It turned out he didn't have anything and he was just undernourished. After a week he was gaining weight nicely and was starting to fill out and look much more like a normal horse again. All he needed now was a check up. (251 words)
