Friendship: The bright red sphere appeared out of nowhere. Where just moments before there had been an untouched patch of greenest grass, there was now a crimson object making itself quite at home, contrasting beautifully with its green seat. Coda shifted closer, but startled backward when a near-identical red sphere dropped beside the original. It landed with a soft thrush, settling beside its companion and looking just as inviting. The spheres were so bright, practically glowing against the grassy background. They invited Coda forth again, and, steeling himself should a third sphere drop down, he shifted forward. A careful sniff of the spheres and a sweet, earthy fragrance swirled about his nose, circulating through each of his flaring nostrils before heading straight to his brain, which was soon emitting but one command:
Devour the spheres.
And so he did. Coda opened his mouth and bit down hard on one of the spheres. It crunched hard between his jaws, spilling juice in every direction. If the smell had been pleasant, the taste was sublime. The texture was dense and hard, but Coda did not have to fight with this new food as he chewed. It was just soft enough so he could enjoy himself. The taste was sweet, almost overwhelmingly so, but before it truly overpowered his taste receptors a flash of tartness reined in the flavor. This balance--hard and soft, sweet and sour--was addictive. Before long, Coda had eaten both bright red spheres, including the tougher cores with their little black seeds. As he crunched at his last bit of heaven, he raised his head and gazed upward. Coda froze when he finally realized where the spheres had come from...Up above his head, sunlight dancing across its leaves and branches, the tree bore innumerable red spheres. They were all just as gorgeous and presumably as delicious as the two he had just disposed of--the only problem was that they were high above his head and not in his belly. But if gravity was anything to trust, more spheres would fall, and as soon as they did he would snatch them up and devour them, one by one by one. However, to ensure his snack, nothing bad would have to befall on this tree...Coda knew what he had to do, and from that moment on, each time he was allowed outside, he raced under the tree's shady canopy and stood guard, daring any to come between him and his delicious sphere tree.
And thus Coda's fierce (albeit one-sided and awkward) friendship with an apple tree.
