Why do they hate showing mercy?; John hates to show mercy as he finds himself relatively weak, emotionally and physically. He uses this trait as a way to feel safer and stronger. He believes that if he is without mercy people will fear him and never pick a fight with him. This is very hard for John to do because in reality he is extremely merciful to nearly everyone and a very soft hearted dragon pup, which is where he earns his title "King of Pain" since he is not only causing pain to others but himself.
