“So would you like to purchase a kitten for the holidays?” The voice startled my thoughts as I held the kitten in my paws tightly. I looked up to find the cheerful adoption councilor at the pet store eyeing me with suspicion. “You know,” she said as she approached me and adjusted my hands so that they supported the kitten correctly. “It would be more comfortable if you held the kitten like this. Also if you’re wondering, this kittens name is Holly Jolly.” I blushed from her comment. I had once loved the holidays, but ever sense the day my father had walked out the door without so much as a goodbye on Christmas I never felt like celebrating. Christmas was the time for family and love, two things that I never really had in my childhood or even now. However, as I child I couldn’t change the choices of my parents to ostracize Christmas spirit but now I could do something to change my “Ebenezer Scrooge” behavior.

So I stared at the happy little ball of fluff in my hands debating how rational it was to achieve a childhood dream. “Take your time, and get to know the kitten before making any decisions.” The councilor said as she handed me a toy, decorated with feathers and bells that made loud noises with every swish of my paw. I waved the toy around the floor from left to right and observed how Holly’s eyes would light up with the thrill of the chase and with several calculated, and some uncalculated pounces she would trap her prey under her paws and prepare to lick it clean. With a meow of protest I picked her up onto my lap again. She gave me a curious expression of confusion from taking her captive away from her but then that expression melted away into pure joy when I scratched her behind the ears. Purring, she pressed herself into my chest as I held her close.

“Have you come to a decision yet?” The councilor said and smiled when I nodded my head. She handed me some paperwork and then I pulled out a bag jingling with coins and stuffed with old paper money. Surprised, the councilor emptied the contents of the bag onto the table and counted the amount. After being satisfied with the proper payment she joked “Wow! How long were you waiting for this moment?” “Well, I was planning this for a while…” I responded, but in my mind I knew that the bag contained all the coins I had found on the street or earned as a child. For years I attempted to accumulate enough for a Christmas present of a life time: my very own cat; a friend. Every year I was turned away from the door for various reasons: not old enough, not enough money, etc. But this year I had finally walked away with not only my new friend, but also a jolly Christmas Spirit.

Pepper ogled at the the candy shop,practically drooling at all the sweet little candies and the thick scent of milk chocolate that swept through the streets of the cold december air.He wanted to go in,he wanted to go in so bad but he had to stop himself."no pepper" he said to himself,scolding him for even thinking about it."you are to buy the christmas presents and that's it" he said.His eyes wandered.His brain said no,but his stomach was tugging him into the store.Inside the store was a wave of warm and welcomed heat.He blinked back a little.
The store was decorated in soft hues of brown and yellows.Giving off a comforting feeling.He peered inside the little cases of sugary sweets,as well as puffy pasterys.He smiled widely.He touched the window of the display case,but then quickly retracted it.He frowned,ears drooping down low.He wanted to get one.But he didn't want to disappoint his friends if he showed up empty handed.With a sigh he rustled the little handbag,opening it.He had about enough money for a single piece of candy.One.Only One.No more then one.
