Where they live and what its like:
My paws are planted in the damp earth, mud oozing between my toes. I glance around, noticing that the ground is speckled with darker browns, highlights and shade. The shadows of the mountains fall over me, not quite stopping the early morning dew from shining. The sun is rising, it's glowing halo just cresting the stoic mountains. I swallow, wondering what possessed me to get up this early. It takes me a moment to remember, but the instant the sun splatters against the mirror like surface of the lake I know. I can see each crystalline detail reflected, doubled by the glassy water. I take a few steps forward, the ground uncomfortably cold against my paw pads. Before I can have any regrets, before I can hesitate, I jump forward. The perfect reflection is shattered, and the memory of the cold ground dims in comparison with the freezing water. As I swim to the surface, I can feel strands of grass brushing against me, as if inviting me to join them under the water. Instead, I push myself to the surface, and as the water streams from my hair I watch the reflection of the sun warped and distorted by the ripples I have caused. The yellows and oranges dance on the surface, as if the ice cold water was set on fire. I inhale, and then let the current pull me back under. I open my eyes, and I can see a fish dart past, it's scales catching the green glow that filters from the sun. I could stay here forever. Maybe if I drowned, then I wouldn't seem so strange. But that's the problem. As the frigid water swirls about me, I am only reminded of the fact that I can not drown.
