Disposition and Condition wrote:This mare was found in a small herd residing in the Aleutian Islands. She is slightly sick, and will need to be nursed back to health before being trained. Otherwise, she is almost completely free of parasites.
This mare is extremely skittish, and will need someone with experience to train her. Anything that is a spray (fly spray) especially scares her.

Cassandra nervously drummed her fingers along the steering wheel of her old, chevy truck. She had arrived at the Adoption Center for Aleutian Ponies half an hour before but she had become a bit apprehensive about meeting her newest equine pal. She wasn't all that sure she could tame a wild pony, she had barely managed to re-train an older aggressive shetland for her neighbors last year. Not half the size and she had worked her hands raw with the shetland. It had been worth it but an Aleutian would be bigger, stronger and possibly even harder to catch.
After taking a couple calming breaths she stepped out of her truck and wiped her sweaty palms on her jeans. She headed to the barn and peered in, it was absolutely packed with ponies. Some looking more freaked out than others. They looked as nervous as she felt.
She passed a few stalls before coming to the number #31 hung upon a stall to her left. Inside a pretty appaloosa filly stood in the farthest spot of the stall, nostril's wide and sniffing the air deeply. Shaky hands aside, Cassandra unlatched the lock on the door and slowly stepped inside, this filly looked to be even more nervous than the girl was. It gave her a sense of calm, one of them needed to be.
The filly's ears perked up before she turned her face away to eye her with one wide eye. She was extremely shy. Cassandra sighed, the filly was tense and waiting for any reason to spook. Haltering would have to come later. The girl stepped out of the stall and quickly walked back to her truck, grabbing a lasso she had brought in case of an emergency.
Hustling back to the stall, Cassandra crept back in with the filly. Doing her best to hide the lasso behind her back before letting out some line to widen the loop, she turned her back to the appaloosa and fiddled with the rope, just slightly wiggling it in her hands. A horse is almost as curious as a cat, almost, just enough curiosity to get them into trouble.
This filly was just as interested in the things she couldn't see as any other horse Cas had met, before she knew it the rope was slipped over the filly's head. That's when the fun began.

Cassandra and the filly churned up the straw bedding in the stall, they had both run circles in the stall. No matter what happened the filly couldn't get away and the rope was always constant around her neck. Finally the filly stood still, lathered and sweating, she was tired and done with running, Cas slowly approached the appaloosa filly. Careful not to stumble or fall, the filly leaned away but didn't take a step, prepared to deal with whatever the girl decided to do next.
The bare brush of a hand on her nose, the filly snorted and moved her head away, Cas didn't back off though and ran her hand down the filly's forehead to her nostril's. The girl and filly stood silently, eying each other, neither moving an inch, finally the filly moved and barely touched her muzzle to the girl's fingers.
The girl smiled before gently pulling on the rope, the filly took a couple reluctant steps. Carefully and slowly, they made their way out to Cas's truck.
The filly almost jumped out of her skin at the trailer when a helper swung the trailer door towards the appy's rear, she had nowhere to go but right up into the trailer with Cas. "Watch your toes!" Cas said as a joke to her new filly. As a horse, she didn't really understand human speak but the girl was sure that would have caused her to grimace at the bad joke."Time to head home?"

- Onsite vet check -

Toasty as Cassandra decided to name her newest equine, was hard to get near. Eventually after a couple hours of going in circles around a round pen. Both were equally worn out, thankfully just tired enough that the filly could be approached. A quick once over, not even being to get near her legs or rear, she was found to be almost sound, she had a rather strong infection causing her to wheeze and a bit of mucus to drip from her nostrils, Toasty would need some time to get better before the filly could meet other horses.
The filly seemed excited by the sound of other horses the moment she got into the pen but now it would be a while before she could meet any of them. Which would give Cas plenty of time to bond with her one on one.
Prescripted with some antibiotics and smothered with gentle affection and a healthy dose of grain. Toasty enjoyed most of it and went from a skittish sick girl to a healthy and happy filly.

A month after her first check up, Toasty was re-checked over to find that she had no more signs of her previous infection, still unsure of having her legs touched. They were avoided but seemed in fairly good condition, no lumps or bruises to cause worry and further inspection from the vet.
Even better was the fact that now Toasty could actually join the other horses and make some friends of the more human friendly equines. All the while she was in quarantine, the other horses were just as eager to meet her, smelling her around but not getting to meet her had them all highly curious as to who she was.
Cas smiled and gently brushed a hand down her filly's neck. "I'm sure you've been lonely, sweetheart. Well now you can make some friends around the ranch besides me."

- Introducing it to the new area -

Halter work with Toasty had taken up most of the time that Cas had kept the filly in quarantine, after a month of hardwork and plenty of treats as well as praise. The girl finally had it to where she could halter her new pony in less than five minutes, quite an achievement for such a spooky horse. Toasty could be difficult depending on the day and whether she wanted to be haltered or not but more often than not, she could be wrangled.
Now healthy and prepared to make some friends, Toasty's ears perked and swiveled as she looked around in excitement. They were walking by some pretty horse full pastures, some had giant draft's lazily grazing in them, others had similar heighted ponies, though none were like Toasty, the others were Icelandic's but they were as close to Toasty's size and climate preference that Cas could get.
She was a tolter breeder and trainer as well as a Gypsy draft lover, she had a few different horse breeds running around and Toasty was the first Seal Pony. New horse around, most of the other horse's were watching with interest while Toasty watched them back as well.
The filly had already been shown the barn, the ranch house and a few of the workers who helped with the horses. Toasty was easily startled by quite a few things but didn't bolt away, which was a good sign to her new owner. She could deal with skittish horses, they just needed some really good training but they usually always ended up being some pretty awesome horses.

Toasty started to paw the ground and prance a bit, eager to run free for the first time in a month. Cas held the halter under her chin firmly and led her out into the pasture where she kept only two of her gentlest tolters, Gypsy and Bear were mates and usually the best for greeting newcomers. Toasty didn't care as soon as she was let loose she took off in a gallop, head and tail held high. Gypsy and Bear greeted Cas happily, before trotting after the newest member to their pasture. The filly was shy and unsure when they first approached, she pranced in place a bit before she greeted them, after a couple moments of awkward greetings the three were galloping around the field like they had always been a herd. Toasty's newness didn't bother the other two and she didn't mind just going with their flow.

Cas smiled to herself as she walked back to the barn. Letting the filly settle in with her newest friends.

Releasing Toasty:

So far, Toasty was doing well with her tolter friends out in the pasture but even as close as two breeds could be. The AISP needed to be able to run with more ponies like her and not in a couple acre pasture. Not long after getting the dun appaloosa, she had been surprised with not one pony through a raffle win but two. Hedwig and Cinna would make a suitable pair for an all mare herd.
Cas, slipped a halter on Toasty and led her out to the fenceline that opened up to a bit 50 acre pasture to let her be herself for while again. Hedwig and Cinna stood a ways out, tamed a bit and wondering what the girl was planning on doing with them next.
As soon as the halter came free, Toasty eyed Hedwig and her filly before turning and trotting off, she didn't want to go up and greet them. She wanted to run and explore rather than bond with other horses right now, the smell of the fresh grass and dirt, and no other fence in sight she snorted and got moving.
Not long after Toasty got up to a gallop, Hedwig and Cinna followed, curious to find out where the dun was heading. Cas was pretty sure she knew how the herd was going to come out, after working so hard to make Hedwig a better follower, the mare was already following the other one. She wondered how Toasty would do as lead mare, she smiled to herself as she laughed at the thought Toasty was going to be so surprised.
